Stern stokes the fire, Carrie Underwood joins ‘Sesame Street,’ speculation about Randy Jackson’s future

howard-stern-sirius

Howard Stern never officially confirmed he was in any remotely serious talks with “Idol” but did gab about it on Monday’s show, saying he’d love to do it at the right price. He also suggested ways he could mock the contestants.

No matter how much I like Stern as a radio host, he’d alienate way more people than he’d attract if he were to be on “Idol.” But Stern, stuck on satellite radio (which never became as big as he had hoped), is getting more press than he has in years. He’s got to be loving that. I listened to him yesterday a bit on my Sirius radio and he was very funny mocking Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres. (He’d ask Ellen whether she wears men’s briefs under her pants–you know, stuff like that.)

As MJ suspects, he may have planted the story himself just to get himself press. That wouldn’t surprise me one iota. Plus, his contract with Sirius/XM is up at the end of the year so this is negotiating posturing to boot. And “Idol” is keeping things very quiet, probably just letting it play out because it’s good buzz, true or not.

- Carrie Underwood has been a daily fixture on this blog for weeks. Now Sesame Street has created a character for her “Carrie Underworm.” Here is info on her Web site:

Carrie will appear on America’s longest running children’s television show, Sesame Street, as a specially created character known as “Carrie Underworm.” Carrie recorded the song, “The Worm Anthem,” specifically for the show.

The episode in which “Carrie Underworm” performs is currently slated to air February 11, March 17, April 8, and April 26 on PBS. To take a peek, go to: DailyMotion.com

-And Popcrunch is feeding some rumors that “Idol” may be looking to clean house completely next year once Simon is gone and also get rid of Randy Jackson. Clearly, he is the least beloved of the three original judges – or at least people won’t be crying or in a rage if he stays or goes. He’s likable but has never struck most folks as crucial to the success of the show. l may put up a poll about him later in the week to see if what I suspect is right.

Now onto Hollywood tonight!

Lot of stuff there Rodney, thanks.

Underworm? Really. I would have hoped that they would put more thought into that sort of thing, because I can think of that in a lot of ways that are probably not the way it was intended. As pointed out by CarrieWorm.

Stern, I’ve hit the “meh” point on that matter. I neither like nor dislike him so I’ve just grown tired of what is obviously just a move to get attention.

Randy, bad move on Idol’s part if they remove him. I’m not a fan of his, but taking him out just for the sake of getting rid of all the originals is just another bad decision. People want some continuity not just some mish mash of unknown and disliked judges.

Thanks for all the well wishes for the new babies and Carla. I know they will thrive and become what all kids are, SPOILED and the apple of Nana’s eye (or in this case great nana)!!!!!!

And RxDawg, you were right on in your math. Carla was 29 weeks.

On the countdown for tonight and already set to blog live. Can’t wait to see just how Ellen will judge and interact with the other judges. Hopefully, she will be better that what she was when she quest judged on SYTYCD.

Wonder where Rickster has been lately? And, welcome back Swami.

One complaint… do we really need to look at this picture again? Rodney you’re killing me here. Get Randy up there or something… anything. Carrie you can do the same picture twice, heck that outfit she had on for the Superbowl could use some blog time *hint* *hint*

I’m on the “meh” train with Stern. I don’t want him on the show, but that’s about it.

“Carrie Underwood has been a daily fixture on this blog for weeks.” Yes, she sure has…and I don’t see anything wrong with that. But um, “Underworm?” Oy. But agree with Lara, she *does* make a cute worm. Ha. I just think she gave her “haters” a really nice gift with that.

Idol cleaning house: If they get rid of Randy, they have Ryan…and Ellen? I mean, did she sign for more than a season? Also, what about Kara, when she came back for Season 9, was it a multi-year deal? If they were to clean house, I suggest they add: Lionel Ritchie (whoever said that, I liked it!) or maybe Quincy Jones(?), Katy Perry (the “can’t-really-sing specialist) AND the rotating Former Idols. That would be my judging panel.

Yo dawg! Don’t be dissin on Randy yo.

In all seriousness, I’ve always found Randy to be the happy medium. I don’t always agree with him, but I see where he comes from. He shouldn’t go anywhere. Of all the judges, he probably gives the best music and technique advice. Kara would be next.

Yawn to Howard Stern.

Randy leaving? when it seems like he’s beginning to take the leadership role? Maybe he’s just getting his face out there so he’ll have a new job as soon as Idol ends.

I would like to see Kara leave. I haven’t seen any real contribution from her yet other than trying to be the best friend of the guest judges.

I still like the idea that the 4th judge is a former Idol(not necessarily a winner). Only they can know what a contestant needs to hear.

Go back to a three judge panel and then replace Kara with Lionel Richey (k&cfan that was my earlier suggestion).

Howard Stern is a racist pig. I can see him making lewd comments about every blonde girl with a big chest and making contestants fell gross. Everyone just misses Paula so much and everyone would laugh at her when they thought she was on drugs. We need to be careful what we wish for. This shows will end in two years but if Randy Jackson goes away then I will be the first one not to watch anymore. And Kara is not even worth talking about. Whoever picked her to be a good judge needs to have their head examined.

NO, No, No. I remember watching a few episodes of H.S.’s radio show on television several years ago (late at night of course) when it came on regular tv. Fortunately the show didn’t air for too long.

Maria: it ends in two years? Oh that’s right 2012 and all that.

I disagree, I think Idol will limp on for many years past that. Look at some of the other shows that have lost their luster yet they continue to be produced. Survivor comes to mind. It doesn’t need to be on top to continue to make money, which is one reason why they don’t want Stern. It’s time to cut costs for the drop in revenue that will come once Simon is gone. This year will be the last for many people with Simon leaving, Randy won’t carry much audience one way or another.

Stern would be a great addition to Idol. He would piss off mainstream America, but like he said during the show, good art is the art that gets a response out of its audience. People either love or hate Stern. There is no gray area. Will Idol lose fans, sure, but it would get a bigger buzz that it has ever had. Idol would also gain a huge portion of Stern’s fans. It is doubtful Stern would be able to do his radio show along with Idol. The fact of the matter is, there would have to be alot of changes made if Stern becomes a judge. Idol would have to relocate to NY and they would need to find replacements for Seacrest and DeGeneres b/c Stern would run them off of the show. For those of you who don’t like Stern, get over it and loosen up. Stern tells it as it is and is one of the best celebrity interviewers ever. Baba Booey to you all!

James “There is no gray area” actually there is. I neither love nor hate Stern. Really. As for the rest, it’s not like Howard Stern is buying the show and able to dictate these sweeping changes. Not going to happen.

I’m going to come right out and say that Idol would NEVER hire Howard Stern. Period! Howard has gotten himself a lot of free publicity out of this and Idol has too although I don’t think they had anything to do with the rumors. Howard holds, imo, sole responsibility for this particular rumor.

James, “Will Idol lose fans, sure, but it would get a bigger buzz that (sic) it has ever had” – and the point being??

Less viewership= less ads = shrinking show, until no show.

James

Do you actually think that DeGeneres and Seacrest will stay on if Stern is there ripping them new ones each show. I think not. If Stern is hired for the $100 million dollar contract as is speculated, I think what he says will go. How much money do you think the current staff makes? Its not anything close to $100 million. I don’t actually think its going to happen anyway. Its a ploy by Stern to get more money out of Sirius/XM. If Stern does get hired, Seacrest should definitely be replaced by Eric the Midget!

JTesla

February 9th, 2010
3:34 pm

Simon > Howard and they didn’t give Simon $100 million so they won’t give it to Howard. That alone should indicate that it will not happen, was never in the cards to happen, and wasn’t even something that could be “speculated.” It’s called publicity Howard Stern is a master at it.

Seacrest replaced by Eric… ok I can buy that. Seacrest could then jump over to X-Factor and make that Idol Part 2.

If you like Sirius XM and Howard Stern then see their “rags to riches” story on DVD. The movie is called “Stock Shock” and it goes over the history, development, and near-death experience of the stock. I did not know the inventor of sirius xm was a woman!–well she is now, at least. DVD is cheaper at http://www.stockshockmovie.com , but the DVD is pretty much everywhere for sale or rent.

First of all, I think Howard Stern’s 15 minutes are way over. I would prefer bababooey over H.S.. I really don’t think it’s necessary to have a panel of the same people every season. Why not have guest musicians (sorry hip-hop folks, you are not musicians) be the judges. They could change every week, so we don’t get tired of them (sorry dawg) and, as evidenced by Ellen Degenerate’s presence, it really doesn’t matter.

Why not? Idol sucks now anyway. Putting Stern’s ugly mug on there may be the final nail in the coffin to finally put it out of it’s misery. And by that, I mean getting the FCC to shut it down.

Although, maybe some of these kids singing songs about Baba Booey and Robin’s chest WOULD pick things up a bit.

It’s a coin toss for me

Not Going To Use My Usual Name

February 9th, 2010

No way are they even thinking about hiring Howard Stern. I’m betting that Simon’s new show will have Paula as a judge, and it wouldn’t surprise me at ALL to see Randy as the third judge and them limit to three judges. I don’t see Seacrest jumping ship, but I also don’t see that he contributes much. What I’d like to see on the new show is Piers Morgan judging with Simon (haven’t they judged together over in Britain?). Piers serves the “Simon” role on America’s Got Talent, but I think that they would play together well and actually have some good conversations about the talent of the contestants. I’d like, in other words, to see some honest commentary and discussion that isn’t all frilly-emotional (”I like you” is something I don’t ever want to hear a judge say again).

For Idol, then, they’re going to have to reinvent themselves. I think they should keep it in the music biz, and I think they should bring back guest judges once they narrow it to twelve. When Idol started, Randy and Simon (though both music biz insiders) weren’t all that known among the general populace. Seems like the best candidates may be folks who aren’t all that well-known–and as some have pointed out, Idol’s likely going to need to make some serious price cuts. I say keep Kara (a judge whom everyone loves to hate can be a powerful motivator for people to watch, even though I actually like her), because Kara comes cheaply compared to the others. Cut Ellen free unless she is da bomb this season, and get a couple of other industry folks–producers, talent-finders, etc.–and have them speak with authority based on years of experience in the industry. That’s a solid formula; it’s the formula with which AI started; and getting back to basics could be just what Idol needs as a fresh shot in the arm.

Not to be all Pollyannaish, but I think there’s potential for Idol and Simon’s new show (X-Factor, right?) to spur each other on to be better.

Finally, a VERY brief address re: last night, and NOT attempting to rehash: At no point did I suggest (nor WOULD I suggest) that personal lives and connections not be discussed on the blog. Ever. I want that on the record. ;)

Now there is why you need to keep coming back and posting NGTUMUN. For the most part I agree, but I doubt that Simon would pick up Randy just because it would be too much of a re-hash. I think he is savvy enough to pick a third judge that would either be a “new” talent to the US audience or someone that created a nice dynamic with him and the other judge (Paula). I think Simon is more ahead of the game than the Idol producers, so all the good suggestions we have for Idol will probably be explored for X-Factor. Because our suggestions are of course the only ones that matter.

JTesla

So Linny has a slightly different plan than Deirdre… Dinner then somethin somethin then Lost. That works too I guess. If they would just call me to be a judge I could bring so many ratings to this show. Donald Trump may have dropped his show but I can still draw a crowd. It will be interesting to see what happens with AI this year. Since Simon has declared his position to host another show, does that interpret the end? Something will have to change if they wish to survive. Maybe open the age range the way X-Factor will be. But the boring 16-28 must end.
