Who’s been your favorite guest judge? More Idol hours to deal with judge bloat

It’s Friday and we’ve endured six of the eight episodes. Most of my regulars here are hankering for Hollywood already, which is understandable. But alas, there are two more audition episodes, which features Denver and Victoria Beckham next Tuesday and a mish mash on Wednesday. That means we’ll get more peeks of some of the guest judges. But we’ve seen at least a sample of them all, a couple briefly (Joe who?) and some quite impressively (ah… Katy Perry.)

I personally liked Perry the most. She was opinionated and funny, noting that this is not a Lifetime movie. Shania Twain wasn’t half bad either, especially her little tease of the Asian dude. Neil Patrick Harris was more serious than I expected but he was willing to face up to Simon at times. That’s a good thing.

Mary J. Blige made a lot of faces but was more annoying than enlightening to me. Victoria Beckham was a bore. Joe Jonas, as noted, was a pure non-presence. Avril Lavigne grated, devil’s horns notwithstanding. And Kristin Chenoweth spent more time buddying up to Kara than giving particularly interesting insight.

In other news-

-To deal with the four-judge panel, Fox will now give us more “Idol.” The first two performance weeks with 12 and 11 contestants typically run two hours. But now so will the weeks with 10 and 9 contestants. That way, we can hear more of Ellen DeGeneres and the others bloviate! Or if Idol is truly being generous. maybe we can hear longer songs by each of the contestants.

- Simon Cowell’s cover of “Everybody Hurts” for Haiti will come out Feb. 7. It includes Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue, Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis, Jon Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey and Michael Buble.

-Carrie Underwood is going to be part of the Michael Jackson tribute this Sunday during the Grammy’s. She joins Atlanta’s Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion and Smokey Robinson. That’s good company!

-LA Times reports Elliot Yamin and Kara DioGuardi are going to Angola for “Idol Gives Back.”

-Vote for the Worst has some controversy about Hollywood bound Todrick Hall and a possible scam involving his “Oz” musical show, which failed. After reading the lengthy story, it sounds like he’ s just not very much into financial details and doesn’t have a terribly smart team around him. Scam? Not clear.  Inept? Well, you be the judge.

Thanks Rodney, I am pretty much on the same page as you when it comes to the judges. Two hours for the top 10 and 9? Come on, isn’t that just an hour for extra commercials and chit chat? Idol is taking the mistakes from last year and expanded on them instead of correcting them.

Angola, who the hell goes to Angola?

I guess it’s too much to ask for them to send Kara to Angola permanently, huh?

BARF!

Miler and Taylor Swift have to be the biggest jokes in the music buis. Sorry to any fans out there, but those girls can’t sing.

Excellent idea, Heather Mac!!! But, hasn’t Angola suffered enough already without having Kara permanently?

As for guest judges, I voted Shania best and Kristin C. the worst. I didn’t see Kristin do much judging and her voice drops her below Joe Jonas IMHO.

Yes, we are getting restless. I forgot we’ve got the Beck-bot to go! Yaaaay….thanks, Rodney, for reminding me.

More hours on Idol: *sigh* It’s like the girlfriend you keep meaning to break up with asking you to move in.

As far as the judges, I thought Doogie and Katy were the most animated and entertaining.

Avril and Joe had to be the worst. I didn’t expect much from Joe, but I was really dissapointed in Avril. I always thought she was the sassy strong willed rocker gal but she really seemed timid.

I voted for Neil as best(although I liked both Katy and Shania a lot. And Mary J as worst because I thought she went beyond rude. Woulda picked Avril as next worst and Joe as the “ghost” judge. Was he really there?

I didn’t pick up on the rudeness from Mary J, but if she was rude I don’t know how Katy also doesn’t qualify for that label as well.

I voted NPH as my favorite. He had his humor, but at the same time he really took it seriously. He wasn’t just there to crack jokes, maybe he could give some pointers to Ellen. For the worst I voted Joe, yeah. Really, if you aren’t going to be there, don’t waste my time.

So one more night of Victoria, I can handle that, she was a decent judge. Not as easy on the eyes as Shania or Katy, but that’s ok. After that we get the “best of the best and the worst of the worst” which usually ends up being a very mediocre show.

We all seem to agree on the judges. I have three favorotes. NPH, Shania T and Katy P – they were knowledegable, spoke in whole sentences and weren’t afraid to take a stand. The Joe “yeah” Guy just wasn’t there (do they get paid to guest, btw?), and Mary J. “If it’s country I don’t give a s—” Blige was rude and unpleasant.

Favorite judge:

1. Neil – He took the role seriously and did a very good job. He’s a witty and likable guy, too.
2. Katy – Liked the cat-fighting with Kara, and wow is she smoking hot.

Least Favorite Judge:

1. Lavigne in a runaway. Vapid, braindead, childish bimbo who should never be allowed to speak on TV again.
2. Jonas, who said and did nothing at all.

All time favorite Dolly Parton. She was helpful with the contestants and a hoot with her personality.

The difference between Mary J and Katy was that Mary J laughed at and mocked the contestants(especially the southern accents and country singers) while Katy was mainly rude to Kara which was ok by me.

Avril, on the other hand was exactly how Neg described her. However, I’ll vote down rude over stupid on most days.

Translation: Taylor Swift = The Beatles of course! Which is like totally true Taylor has personally written as many hit songs as the Beatles you know, and like just because she doesn’t have her own Rock Band game that is just because the world hates Country Music. The New York Times gave Jason Castro a decent review when he performed at something called Joe’s Pub. In New York, I suppose, “music reviewer” Jon Caramanica doesn’t tell. He starts his critique this way: “Sometime in 2007 Jason Castro accidentally stumbled through a door that led to the auditions for ‘American Idol’ and decided to just stick around. At least that’s how it seemed throughout that show’s seventh season, from his first appearance right up until he placed fourth. He had about one-tenth the intensity of the next-most-lethargic contestant, appeared anxious when it came to speaking and was only beginning to test the boundariesof his voice.

Mr. Caramanica ends on a happier note: “When Mr. Castro sang ‘Hallelujah’ on ‘Idol’, channeling neither Leonard Cohen nor Jeff Buckley, it was as if he’s been put up to it – the lyric was out of his depth, he didn’t quite hit all the notes. Simon Cowell loved it, but in the postperformance interview. Mr. Castro looked like someone who had just said a few sentences in a foreign language, and wanted reassurance he hadn’t inadvertently insulted anyone’s mother.
“No more. ‘Hallelujah’ has become a staple of his live shows, his steady and gentle take now in the pantheon of approved readings. It closed the show here, Mr. Castro singing it with flexibility and brio. He planted a flag – each note was his own.”

I would have had Katy and NPH tied for best guest judge but I voted for Katy in the poll. (Can you guess what the tie-breaker was??) Shania was a very close third place. As for the others:

Victoria B. – I think the fact that many people just don’t seem to like her for one reason or another also colored their opinion regarding her judging performance.

Mary J. – I didn’t get the same rude vibe that a lot of you did. I thought she just reacted naturally (and the same way many of us have) to some of the delusional hopeful! (And as an aside, remember Simon doesn’t have much fondness for Country music either.)

Kristen C. – Way too much bonding with Kara rather than contributing to the judging. Expected more from her.

Avril – She just seemed a bit overwhelmed. Almost like she did the whole thing just for fun and got in over her head, then realized it.

Joe Jonas – uhh, ….Yeah.

Mary J practically fell out of her chair laughing at Vanessa(the aeroplane girl) She was laughing at the way she talked and she was laughing at the way she sang. Vanessa was talented and sweet and scared and Mary J was a total b*tch about it. Other than that, I’m sure she’s a very nice person. ;-)

JTesla

Mercedes S., I’m surprised to see you didn’t like Pink’s performance. I was pretty impressed by it. I wish I knew whether or not she was lip syncing. If she really sang that song, than she is more talented than I ever gave her credit for. But alas, I have my doubts. It sounded a little too good for her to be spining like she was.

I feel asleep about half way through and plan to watch the rest tonight. I see that Taylor Swift stayed true to her below average self. I guess I should say that I don’t have anything personal against Taylor. I also will admit that she is a very good songwriter. But come on, this girl is winning grammy’s for christ’s sakes. She should be able to sing if she’s winning all these awards. Studio magic strikes again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,LINNEY!

My point about Pink is that I would have enjoyed her singing if she had continued doing so in that hooded monk’s thing – she doesn’t need a production number to be appreciated. Crotch-grabbing Beyonce and her storm troppers was another unnecessary, over-produced number. Funny how so many of the “acts” were imitating Lady Gaga, yetIi didn’t see her pick up any Grammy. I liked plain-singing, plain-performing Lady Antebellum (from Georgia), btw.

Good morning all, and Happy Birthday Linny!

I still need to watch Taylor Swifts performance. Of course it doesn’t matter what I think of her considering that she has at least 7.6 million albums sold. Add to that 24.3 million digital tracts sold – making Taylor the top selling digital artist of all time, and well I’ll just leave it at that ;)

kelly&carriefan

Re: Pink’s performance. I loved it…she’s is much more talented that she gets credit for. The upside down singing and acrobatics are a staple of her shows. (I saw her do it when she was Justin Timberlake’s opening act for the Futuresex/Love Show tour back in early 2007). Even Kelly seemed impressed and tweeted that Pink performance should signal an end to the “age of lip-synching.”

But yes, agreed, Lady A and Zac Brown definitely were amazing. I also loved Bon Jovi, and really had no doubt that Livin’ On A Prayer would be the “audience’s choice.”

JT, lol…I think you’re definitely on to something. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but they have already used Taylor as background music during the audition shows. I remember it for the same reason I remember them using Miley’s The Climb….My thoughts at the time: “oh, the irony!” ;)

There were a few awards that weren’t televised, e.g., Kelly was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, which Black Eyed Peas won. And Taylor won two of her four awards before the show started. For one of them, she beat out Carrie’s Just A Dream. (!!!)

I LOVED Lady Antebellum’s performance last night. They are really good singers and that duet, “Need You Now,” is really special to me.
Thought Pink was amazing and I don’t think she was lip-synching. She almost never does.
Taylor Swift was an abomination and NO ONE should ever invite her to sing live on TV again. Pitiful.
Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles were great, too, but they don’t hold a candle to when Highlander and I sing it! LOL (just my humble opinion!… giggle)
Also, best performance by a guy a lot of people probably didn’t know or thought was dead: Leon Russell.

Here’s something I found on msn.com. apparently we are not alone in our opinion of little Taylor swift:

Witchy…and Pitchy: Poor Stevie Nicks had to hear Taylor Swift shoot for the moon–and miss–on the harmonies on “Rhiannon”–which had to hurt. But the veteran players backing them, including the revered Waddy Wachtel, were grooving extra hard in the background, almost willing Taylor to stay on key.

Randy: “Dude… That was smoking hot. Love the look, the whole British vibe. a million billion percent yes!”

Paula: “Bono? Are you any relation to Sonny Bono? I loved Sonny & Cher! And when did Chastity become a guy?”

Simon: “Love the voice, great song choice. That performance makes me proud to be British.”
