TV spoilers: How much is too much?

Disclaimer: Before I get started on the topic, I want to assure everyone that I am NOT Rodney Ho. Rodney is currently on a very special vacation and will return next week. I am not a journalist. I’m not even a very good writer. But I AM opinionated and I DO love “American Idol.”  So bear with me for the week as I try my darnedest to keep Rodney’s popular blog afloat while he enjoys his much deserved and delayed honeymoon.

It came to my attention on Saturday that not everyone likes spoilers. Being a spoiler fanatic myself, this should have come as a big surprise to me, but I honestly get it.

A little history: We started posting spoilers on this blog about 4 or 5 years ago. By we, I mean fellow blogster Mike S who had come to be known as our resident researcher. Due to a change in Mike’s job, he felt he could no longer put the time into researching spoilers and handed the reins and some of his sources to me. Up until last year, most spoilers were about what song each contestant was singing and in what order the contestants would sing. These spoilers in my opinion are pretty harmless and shouldn’t interfere with anyone’s enjoyment of the show.

Last year, a whole new wrinkle was thrown into the land of spoilerdom. Joe’s Place, another American Idol blog, had spies everywhere in Hollywood and by the time Hollywood Week aired on TV, most of us had read Joe’s incredibly accurate spoiler list of the top 50 contestants at least 3 weeks earlier.

This year the powers-that-be at “American Idol” have delayed taping Hollywood Week, which is usually scheduled for early December, until this past week in January. They will tell you it was because of scheduling difficulties, but after Joe’s Place’s coup last year, if you believe that I have bridge in Brooklyn you might be interested in buying. Joe’s Place is working diligently to give us the results of Hollywood Week again this year. They have already named 15 of our future Top 24…and I have little doubt that they will know all 24 by the time this is posted.

I have to say I object to this. I really don’t want to know the Top 24 when we’re only two cities into the audition rounds. Finding out before the show begins what song a contestant will sing is fun.  Finding out that the really great looking guy with the great sounding voice didn’t get past Hollywood Week is a whole other thing. Why even watch the audition shows? (believe me, I’ve asked myself that question almost every year of Idol’s existence). Yeah, every now and then we get fun stuff like Larry Platt’s “Pants On the Ground“, but if we already know the Top 24, what’s the point?

The BIG question however is, how long will I be able to resist looking at the list? I have absolutely no willpower when it comes to stuff like this. And once I’ve looked at the list, how long will it be before my evil side takes over and I post it?

I guess the point I’m trying to make is there seems to be two types of spoilers: the fun kind and the kind that spoils the fun.

That’s why I need you opinions on this topic.

Morning!

There was supposed to be a poll with this piece. We’ll see if it appears later. In the meantime, give me your vote on the subject. 1.No spoilers at all. 2.Only song spoilers. 3.Every spoiler known to the blogosphere.

Morning, Deirdre (and everyone else).

Not bad for your first thread, D. I agree about not wanting to know some of the important stuff beforehand. Songs and singing order – okay!

I imagine, since it’s a holiday, we’re going to be pretty slow in here today.

Nana, I hope you have made it through the weekend without too much misery.

Good morning! Great start, D! As for me, I love spoilers, but after reading the rationale, I think I agree about not wanting to know the actual Hollywood results just two cities into the show. It does really kind of spoil it, but I am like you, will I be trying to find out anyway. So, I guess I am not really much help. Just knowing the information is out there is a HUGE temptation.

Nana, if you have time to read this, please know we are all pulling for you and hoping for the best outcome for everyone concerned.

I will be peeking in from time to time, just to stay connected. My couch is looking mighty fine right now. I got up at my usual time, even though I am off today. Guess my body clock overruled the alarm I had set. But, I love vegging out on the couch and watching morning tv, which I never can do.

I had to check in today just to see how D is doing. So far so good I would have to say. I like spoilers, I even think I would like to know the top 24.

Good Morning Everybody.

Today’s Quote: “Life is short and we never have to much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the dark way.”

First, let me say that all the prayers that were sent for my family has been answered. I am truly blessed to have such friends. Special thanks to Harm for being my contact and posting updates here.

After his code blue Thursday, he was in ICU until Sunday when they moved him to PCU. He still has along way to go, but is doing better. His prognosis isn’t the one I would like to have had, but I know that he is in the hands of God and have come to accept what I can’t change. Since I got up at 3:00am on Thursday morning, I have had maybe 10 hours sleep. Got home this morning around 1:45am and dressed and was leaving my house at 4:30 for work.Had no sleep at all last night, but I’m fine. Now on to the blog.

Ms. Deirdre, your article is really good. No one would guess that you’re not a pro. It is very well written. Rodney may be jealous! :)

Personally, I don’t like spoliers. It’s like being told the outcome of a movie or book before your get to the end. It spoils the whole thing. After saying that, I voted for no spoilers of any kind.

Thanks for the good words, everyone!

Nana, your philosophical stance is very good. At this point, there’s really nothing you can do but hope for the best possible outcome. However, knowing that and believing it are two different things. You have a rough road ahead. take good care of yourself. That’s the best thing you can do for your dad.

D, great job on this post. Neg doesn’t give frivolous compliments, so you know he is very sincere.

BTW, Neg agrees with you entirely, and plan to avoid any inside knowledge of who gets through in advance…the word “spoiler” is accurate. It spoils the fun.

No spoilers for me, D. That’s why I avoid Joe’s Place Blog and anyone else who wants to, well, spoil things for me. I like to watch “Idol” and see what happens, not know beforehand. If that was the case I would check this blog before I watch the show (yes, I tape it due to work schedule). Just my two cents worth.

I would not like to see who wins but top 24 I have no problem with.

I was all set to go with the all spoilers, all the time choice, but after reading everybody’s sensible comments… I don’t know. Really hated to hear beforehand that Guitar Girl didn’t make it, and if I’d been told that my favorite, Vanessa from Tennessee, had been cut, gosh darn it, what would be the point of watching even the Hollywwod tryouts?

So I guess I’m “mixed”.

Good start, D.

On a sunnier note, in yesterday’s New York Times, Charles Isherwood spend a whole page documenting his Broadway double-header – on one day he took in “South Pacific” and “Rock of Ages” . Quote from article: “And what both shows do share is expert execution. The ensemble cast of ‘Rock of Ages’, as directed by Kristin Hanggi, performs with a wit and zest that’s impossible to resist. Constantine Maroulis, the ‘American Idol’ competitor with lungs of steel, has proved himself to be a winning, sweet-spirited and completely natural actor in the lead role of Drew, negotiating the bridge between sincerity and spoof with breezy amiability.”

On the spoiler issue…I was for all spoilers all the time until last year. then Joe’s Place came up with that top 50 list and I realized that watching the slow walk to the chairs became even more boring than it already was because I knew whether each contestant had made it or not. American Idol had done so much crap( 4 judges, 36 semifinalists) with their format last year that adding the spoilers from Joe’s Place turned the early part of the season into a real dud.

Fortunately, Adam and Kris and Allison got my attention and saved the season for me.

And that’s the key, isn’t it? No matter how many dumb things Idol comes up with, it’s still really all about the contestants and how involved each of us gets in their survival.

Good morning all, Deirdre – great blog to start off the week.

I don’t mind spoilers. However I’m a bit different than many of you. I watch the auditions for the train wrecks, I watch Hollywood to see both the drama and to start enjoying the talent, I don’t watch the long walk show because it is dumb. After that I get spoilers for every results show except for the final one. So spoil away it’s not going to change my viewing habits.

Checking back for a minute.Seems like a most regualars would prefer not to know. I just hope I can resist peeking in at the other places. I am surprised at myself, for like Nana, I hate for someone to tell me the end of a book or a movie, so why should I be any different here? Puzzling. I just got up off my couch, after watching some morning shows, snoozing a bit, then eating lunch. Common sense tells me I need to get out for a bit, so bye for now.

Great job, D! I’m OK with song choice spoilers but not the big stuff.

Nana, I hope the improvement continues. And don’t forget to take care of yourself!

To elaborate on my earlier post, I don’t mind knowing ahead of time what song a contestant is going to sing or what order the Idols are going to sing in. But I, too, would rather not know in advance who did or didn’t make it after Hollywood week. (As Deirdre said, it makes the ’slow walk’ show more boring.)

Nana, get some rest. We don’t want to see you getting sick from being run down physically. (The emotional part is hard enough.)

Dozed off last night in the last 10 minutes of The Bachelor, so can anyone tell me who didn’t receive a rose?

Morning!

I submitted a blog entry yesterday afternoon so I don’t know why it hasn’t been posted yet. It isn’t all that interesting anyway. ;-)

Sorry Nana, I don’t watch The Bachelor. I’ll see if I can find it someplace else.

I really enjoyed reading everyone’s take on the spoilers. Very interesting read. I have to say that since I started posting the top 24/50/etc. the show has become more boring for me too…lol. But when the top 24 is shown on our TV it becomes exciting again. A positive note to the spoilers is that I won’t get invested in anyone know didn’t make it. Anyway, if you want the top 24…here they are: http://www.joesplaceblog.com/2010/01/the-top-24-of-american-idol-9/
