Daniel Powter top ‘one-hit wonder’ of decade, Jessica Sierra’s baby

daniel powter

Remember Daniel Powter’s sing-songy “Bad Day” song, spurred into “big hit” land by season five of “American Idol”? Powter’s song was the “exit” song every time someone got eliminated. It has not aged well.

It was No. 1 for five weeks in 2006. Powter never returned to the top 100. It was also ranked as the top one-hit wonder of the decade by billboard.com.

Bo Bice was another one who landed on the list with his version of the atrocious “Inside Your Heaven,” which landed at No. 2. Although “Real Thing” cracked the top 20 of the top 40 charts, Billboard is basing this on the Hot 100. “Real Thing” peaked there at No. 56, so it isn’t counted as a “hit.”

Others who qualfied in one-hit wonder land include Gnarls Barkley (featuring Atlanta’s Cee-lo), Atlanta’s D4L (with the goofy and ultimately irritating “Laffy Taffy”), former (and possibly current) Atlantan Blu Cantrell (”Hit’Em Up Style”), MIMS, Crazy Town (”Butterfly”) and James Blunt (”You’re Beautiful”).

- Jessica Sierra, who was that other blonde gal not named Carrie Underwood from season four, has seen her career go the complete opposite direction as Carrie: she was arrested for cocaine possession and assault in 2007 and got probation. She had a sex tape leaked onto the Internet. She taped “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew” on VH1. She broke her probation in late December 2007 and ended up in prison again and a year in rehab.

But there is some good news. Out of rehab, she also now has a baby. Who the daddy is is not identified in this supposed press release.

I’m not sure you can call that “good” news, Rodney…especially for the baby.

My favorite one hit wonder was a song called Got the Music in Me. I can’t remember who sang it…I’ll go look.

Excuse me…the song was called You Get What You Give by the New Radicals and now that I’ve listened to it again, I think I might have been brainwashed by its “catchiness”.

I hope she takes better care of the her baby than she is of herself. Just maybe, the baby will make her want to do and be better. For the child’s sake I hope so.

K&CF – My daughter is doing much better. I spoke with her a few minutes ago and she is beginning to do a few things around her house. Thank you for asking.

Now, if we can just hear from Rickster. I was sitting here doing a report and he popped in my mind, then I read the blog and see where some of you have mentioned him. I guess we are in sync with each other.

I never really cared for Bad Day. Interesting that the list, at least what was posted on the blog, includes so many Atlanta connections. For the record, I’m not surprised at WHY some of those were one-hit wonders…

Jessica Sierra has a fairly decent voice, but she (and basically every girls that season minus Vonzell) was overshadowed by the wide-eyed, little country girl. I do hope the baby helps her grow up and move past all her issues.

D, I think the New Radicals song is from the late 90s, but yes, it was a catchy song back in the day.

Nana, I’m glad to hear that! :) Yes, I think we’re all wondering about Rickster.

PS. I see sunshine at the moment. I *almost* forgot what it looked like.

In stark contrast to today’s post, here’s someone who’s definitely NOT a one-hit wonder. Sorry, JT, it’s another Decade thing…but you might like it. I did! ;)

Here’s our first possible spoiler for the new season via mj:

Producers have hinted in a few interviews that the Idol format could revert back to the Top 24, ending the experiment with the pre-Season 4 Top 36 format. No official word on that yet. The new season of American Idol begins on January 12.

K&Cfan: Kelly deserves to be on the chart, it’s not like that will change over the next year. However, why isn’t Lady GaGa higher on the lists? It’s rigged.

Deirdre

So it appears we’re going back to that argument about when the new millenium started. 2000? 0r 2001?? I’ve always been of the opinion that we count from 1 to 10 and that makes a decade….at least until we hit 2000, then it seemed silly to wait another year to celebrate the start of the millenium because, after all, it was the first time a 2 appeared as the first number in a year. So, if we count 2000 as the first year of this decade, then 2009 IS the end of the decade. HOWEVER, we won’t be counting it that way for the next decade…which means 2010 gets left out in the cold as a nonentity year.

Are we clear? I’m not!

JTesla

December 9th, 2009

Just because ignorant people made a big deal out of the year 2000 doesn’t mean that anything has changed when it comes to counting from 1 to 2009.

2010 won’t be left out because it will be lumped in with the teens. It will go along with 11 and 12 which are not teens, but just like the first decade we don’t really have a proper name for those years. After that the “decades” will continue to be lumped together by the 3rd digit and not by actual decade, up until the year 2100 when the lack of a leap year will cause millions of people’s heads to pop out of sheer bewilderment.

Our calculation of years, along with the calendar itself, is messed up. Even Bede, who helped popularize the BC-AD system, knew that the starting year was not where it was intended. Don’t get me started on having month names of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th month being our 9th-12th months.

No I’m not really that uptight, but I’m a bit of a calendar nerd.

Deirdre

December 9th, 2009
7:50 pm

But the last time we changed milleniums(millenii?) was the year 1000….or 1001…so you can hardly blame people for wanting to celebrate as soon as that “2″ appeared. do you think the people back then waited until 1001? I mean, come on!!!!! ;-)

JTesla

December 9th, 2009
8:01 pm

Many people back then didn’t realize it, things weren’t as uniform as they are today and different systems were still in use. For most people the New Year wasn’t even celebrated on the same day as we celebrate it now, even though January 1st was made the secular new year by Julius Caesar if not before. Even the crazy American Colonists celebrated the New Year in mid-March (hence the original inaguration date of the President) or mid-September.

Besides, they didn’t take the Y1K bug quite as seriously back then so there wasn’t all the hype that we had.

70 degrees yesterday and back to freezing today. Nobody will EVER be able to say that Georgia’s weather is boring.

Today is my final shopping day! Yea!!!!! I only have a few more things to pick up. Even down here on the south side the traffic has reached extra-special annoying! If I didn’t have 3 doc appts next week(one for Mom, one for me and one for my dog Gus)I’d stay in until the holiday rush ended.

Gooooooooood mornin’, y’all!

Add me to the list of people who got a little lost on the calendar thing. But wait….it’s not gonna matter when the world ends on 2012. (Just for you JT! Ha!)

Does anyone watch Modern Family and Cougartown? Both were awesome last night. Oh, and did anyone catch a certain Idol runner up on the Most Fascinating People thing? I meant to, but didn’t.

So anyway…it’ll be a short day for me today. I’m hauling my cookies down to Columbus for Kelly’s show! I’m like a five-year old on December 25th (aka Christmas) morning right before we light the holiday candelabra and gather around the ol’ holiday tree. ;)

I’ll be sure to fill y’all in on all the detail and take as many pictures as I can. I’m trying a new camera, so we shall see.

PS. Yes, I’m still hoping for a small miracle so I can see her again on Monday at the Q100 thing.

I tape Modern Family and haven’t watched it yet.

I have read that Adam’s interview last night was short and covered old ground. He will have a taped segment on The View today for anyone interested. Rumor has it that he and Elizabeth got along really well.

Have a safe trip down to Columbus, k&cf! If you get a chance, give Kelly a big shout out from the blog!

Okay, expanding on the theme from Deirdre and JT: What songs can you remember with calendar months or references in the title? (i.e, Calendar Girl – Neil Sedaka, September Morn – Neil Diamond,
See You In September – The Seekers, I think!???)

In keeping with the thread headline, bonus points if you can name one that was also a one-hit wonder.

Morning, all. We’re back from KY. My s-i-l passed away on Monday. The shape she was in… that’s the best for her.

Tough for my wife to lose the only sister she had. (Her brothers don’t seem to realize that they only lost one of two. My wife lost 1 of 1.)

VERY short week this week. Short week next week. (Have to leave early on Friday to make it back up for the memorial service Saturday the 19th.)

The best news was that our son & daughter-in-law survived a scary car wreck of their own. D-i-l was driving our son to work. Car ran a red light , hit them (front left) which spun them head on into another car waiting to travel the direction from which the red light runner was coming. Both air bags deployed, and both walked away with our d-i-l getting a small cut/abrasion on her head.

Amazing that they survived the wreck they did, while the very minor wreck in which my s-i-l was in ultimately wound up taking her.

When it’s your time… it’s your time.

Dear Rickster, I’m soo sorry to hear about your loss. I guess the only “good” thing about the way it happened is that it gave you all time to prepare and say goodbye. I pray your family deals as best as possible and turn this holiday season into a celebration of her life. That is great news about your son and d-i-l…adding an extra prayer for everyone’s safety.

And we had the fun of trying to drive home Tuesday – through that monster storm. The trip (through Louisville, KY to Nashville, TN to Chattanooga, TN to home) normally takes 7-8 hours. At the nine-hour mark, we were still just west of Chattanooga.

At the rate we were traveling, it would have been another 3-4 hours (getting us in at 1:00 in the morning.) So we holed up for the night and came home the next day (yesterday.)

Wrecks, rain, wind. One of the scariest drives of my life.
