Jordin Sparks recovering from appendectomy, Danny Gokey’s single

Jordin-Sparks-j04

Jordin Sparks had to cancel a trip to Australia to have an appendectomy.

She is recuperating now.

Her last tweets last night:

I can’t keep my eyes open anymore. (rip appendix) Goodnight twittlets.

For those who missed my tweets earlier…I got appendicitis on tues & took the appendix out last night. So I’m recovering! :)

-The label RCA Nashville has decided to go for a more upbeat song than “It’s Only” called “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.”

What you think? Smarter move? Ballads are usually tougher sells on the country charts.

- Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson will be performing at the American Music Awards this Sunday. I’ll post the results.

Get well wishes to Jordin!

I actually kinda like Danny’s song. I like the ballad too! He always was very good…he just got killed by the hype and the over-used backstory.

To me, country music is the only genre in music where ballads are really even possible. But it’s likely that a more upbeat song would be a better song out of the gate than a ballad.

Danny’s new single sounds like something Rascal Flatts would do.
Rodney, you must not listen to much Country music. There are ballads all over the place. Carrie’s had a couple hit ballads and Martina McBride probably has as many power ballads as some 80’s Rock groups.

And since JT asked for it…

American Idol auditions we’d love to have seen: Richard Harris (Singing ‘MacArthur Park’)

Randy: “Dawg… it just wasn’t working for me. It was pitchy.”

Kara: “I could really feel the emotion you put into that cake and how much it hurt when the rain ruined it. Now THAT’S artistry.”

Paula: “Cake? I love cake! It’s ruined? That’s so sad!”

Simon: “The rain may have ruined that cake… but that’s nothing compared to how badly as you ruined that song.”

I never said he was perfect, Rickster. ;-) The “Scream On” debacle happened because he saw his lead fading away and tried to be more Adam than Adam. Big mistake. But he did have some nice moments on the show.

Poor Jordin….glad she is on the mend.

Danny wasn’t half bad. Early on, he was a fave of mine….but like everyone else, I got turned off by the blatant pimping and sob story.

Hmm, I think y’all probably can guess what *I’LL* be watching this Sunday… I love me some Adam. ;)

oh, and wasn’t Daughtry performing as well?

OH weird…my first post totally did not show up, so my post that’s there makes less sense… let me see if i can re-create it…

the first thought i had on reading this headline was Since when do we get reports on the marital status of former idol contestants? but then realized in THIS case that was not even appropriate to think…

Actually, really enjoyed both of the two songs they’ve had up from Danny’s album. I can see why they might want to choose an upbeat route, it is a fun positive song. His original single It’s Only is beautiful though, and really shows Danny’s vocals very well. Since I loved them both, I can’t be unhappy either way.

So…my review of The Blind Side will follow for those interested and for those who aren’t interested…just skip the next paragraph.

What a nice story. Sandra Bullock is spot on as a steel magnolia who takes in a down and out black kid from the projects. And the young man(sorry I can’t remember the actor’s name) shows what people mean by “perfect casting” A great hulking boy who should be scary but has the saddest and kindest face and learns what it means to be loved. Sounds kinda sappy but it isn’t. It’s just a group of people who become a family. It really works!

Highlander. I listen to country music all the time. I’ve spoken to country artists and they’ve often told me country radio programmers are more resistant to ballads in general. It doesn’t mean ballads are excluded. In fact, right now, there are quite a few on the charts. Love Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” Grammy anybody?

The big kid in “The Blind Side” is played by Quinton Aaron, who comes from nowhere. Like the character he plays, Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens, Quinton never knew his dad, and was also the biggest kid in school. Glad you liked the movie, D.

“My Best Days” is an upbeat, feel good song. I think it will have wider appeal. I can see something like this being very popular in live performances. And the video will be fun. I am willing to bet they will have Danny dancing. Danny said that when it was first performed at Sony, someone said that they can easily see this song being played in a movie. Ironically, the DJ in San Francisco who interviewed Danny said the same thing. It certainly features Danny’s soulful voice. And I don’t think the critics will claim that this is more of a CCM song. And it certainly fits Danny’s personality – he really is an upbeat, fun kind of guy.

“…I’ve spoken to country artists and they’ve often told me country radio programmers are more resistant to ballads in general.” – Rodney, 5:54, 11/20

Rodney, I’ll take your word for it but it certainly sounds weird considering the fact that Country music has a long history of “slit-your-wrist” music. (i.e. D-I-V-O-R-C-E, He Stopped Loving Her Today, Keeper Of The Stars, Live Like You Were Dyin’, etc., etc., etc.)

Highlander: “Slit-your wrists” music? Don’t forget Vince Gill’s “I Call Your Name” or the Rev Horton Heat’s “Where in the Hell Did You Go With My Toothbrush.” Classics.
Love those sighin’ cryin’ songs.

I seem to recall (from years and years ago) that some rock band (I think it was Spooky Tooth) did a parody of Country ballads. Something like this:

You done stomped on my heart
And smashed that sucker flat
I’m tellin’ you, you sorta
Crushed my aorta.
You flushed me from
The bathroom of your heart
You broke my heart
So I busted your jaw.

Ya just can’t get any more heart-wrenching than that, can ya??? :-)

Rickster, I don’t think they understood that you were saying country worked better for ballads than other genres. However, I contend that Richard Marx, REO Speedwagon and Journey have all thrown FABULOUS ballads out there on the pop charts and done very well with them. :-)

I like both “My Best Days are Ahead of Me” and “It’s Only”. I love his power ballads and his soaring voice! This guy can sing! He sings with so much emotion and feeling.. I know he will have a very successful career!
