Ryan Seacrest gets restraining order; Adam Lambert’s handlers vs. Out magazine

adam-lambert-out-100

I’m late on these bits of news since I spent Tuesday focused on writing up my David Cook interview.

hmm… let’s see. gets a civil restraining order against his stalker on top of Ryan Seacrest last month’s criminal restraining order.

The order issued Tuesday requires Chidi Benjamin Uzomah Jr. to stay 100 yards away from the radio and television personality. A criminal court judge granted a similar order against Uzomah earlier this month.

And Adam Lambert’s handlers apparently tried to downplay his gayness in conversations with Out magazine. The editor in this letter (scroll down to read it) seems bitter about the situation despite the fact Adam comes off refreshingly candid in the actual interview.

Here’s a link to part one of the interview. It’s extremely long. Here’s a very brief excerpt:

Are you usually attracted to straight boys?
No, actually.

Kris seems like a real straight guy.
He is a real straight guy. He’s very straight. He’s just…cute.

He’s pretty.
He’s pretty. He’s a pretty boy. You know? And he’s nice. He’s a really nice guy. One of the things that I think is so refreshing and cool about him is that he’s from Arkansas — and this is me being small-minded — I just kinda figured that the acceptance of people like me in Arkansas is probably a lot lower than here. And he’s very open-minded to people’s lifestyles and he doesn’t judge. He’s a good guy.

On sexuality: “To some people, me being sexual is really offensive because I’m gay. They’re like, ‘He’s being really gay.’ And I’m like, actually, ‘No, I’m just being sexual.’ Male sexuality is frightening to America [but] female sexuality is all over the place.”

Sorry, but there’s just no way they can downplay his gayness, imo.

Morning!

Out magazine has been guilty, in the past, of outing people who didn’t want to be outed. If they’re still doing that, I’m not going to be giving anything they say much credence.

It sure took long enough to get that restraining order. The looney guy could have hurt Ryan half a dozen times by now.

And yes, JT, I think you deserve an apology. I even think you got a half-hearted one already. My comments are based on the problem that cherie, imo, did nothing wrong in the first place. We have never shied away from making digs at the performers. When she was criticized, she went into defense mode and the whole thing blew up way out of proportion.

Hi y’all….boy things sure got lively yesterday afternoon.

I’m not a spokesperson for the gays, and I do object to the questionable letter from the editor. Adam is a performer. Yes, he is gay, but that’s not why he’s in the spotlight. I can understand a certain level of pride at “Hey, look! We got an openly gay Idol finalist!” But trying to turn him into some sort of poster child is a disservice to him and his talent.

While I do object to the way Out went about it, are we really surprised that 19 would want them to spin the situation at all? Clearly, they want Adam to be sucessfull ($$$) and on that end they will do what they can to make him as “non-threatening” as possible….even if that means “dialing down” the gay.

Deirdre

I’m not sure you can “dial-down” Adam’s gay but I agree that 19 will be as good a representative for Adam as they think they should be. Whether that’s in Adam’s best interest or not remains to be seen. All I can say is, gay or not, the kid was sexy as hell in the Time For Miracles video so he should be working with whoever put that together.

God morning, all.

Okay, first off, Rodney, please don’t use the term “Adam Lambert’s handlers”! BAD mental image! **delete**delete**delete**

Secondly, K&CF, if “they want Adam to be sucessfull ($$$) and on that end they will do what they can to make him as “non-threatening” as possible….even if that means “dialing down” the gay,” then maybe 19 is dumber than we’ve thought from their past muck-ups.

So being gay really hurts one’s chances at becoming a music superstar? Right!! HELLO…Can anyone say Elton John, David Bowie, (the late) Freddie Mercury? Yeah, their orientation really killed their careers!

To be honest with you, D, IMO, that is exactly it. There’s really no hiding Adam being gay. I’m sure they would’ve if he’d let them try…in his defense, he’s stood his ground on being himself.

Highlander, all I’m saying is…being gay doesn’t necessarily hinder his chances at being sucessful. But those examples you listed were mostly established artists. To me, different from some kid who was starting out in people’s living rooms. I do have to say that I’m happy that America voted him into the finals and didn’t dismiss him as just the gay theater kid.

I just think it’s a bit naive to think that they won’t try to make him fit the mold they want him to. And for every Elton, David, and Freddie…I’m sure there are plenty of people who were told “You can be gay…just not THAT gay.” Who knows? Maybe one day he’ll transcend sexuality and we’ll just focus on his music….

I think the reason I admire Adam the man, as opposed to Adam the singer, the most is because he is who he is. He’s not trying to be a standard-bearer for the gay community. He’s not trying to hide by being “less gay”. He has accepted himself for who he is and basically says take it or leave it.

Deirdre

I just hope that both sides(his management and the gay community) don’t beat him into the ground trying to make him do what they want.

What stands out for me about Adam is that he seems to be in control. Forces in the entertainment business will always try to control and profit off someone, with Adam that will be more difficult.

I’m sure that Out Magazine is feeling the same crunch as all printed media, and let’s face it their goal becomming reality takes away their shock value. They strike me as trying to ride Adams coattails while 19 and Adam want the press for selling more songs.

I will say that I feel Adam is downplaying his sexuality not for popularity, which it could stiill hurt, but he does so in an attempt to focus on the music. He might find the artistic focus difficult to maintain with the screaming girls viewing him as a god.

I don’t see why ANYONE would try to downplay his gayness. Everyone knew from the get go that he was gay and went with it. There is alot of gayness in the world, but it shouldn’t deter nor take away from the person, or make them less of a person, I know that some will bash his gayness because it’s not their style or perference, but as long as the gayness doesn’t in any shape, form, or fashion interfer with their lifestyle, what makes them holier than thou? A gay person is as much a human being as a non-gay. They have feelings and love the same as we do. The difference is they perfer same gender. Is that wrong? I don’t know, but I do know that it’s part of life. I for one, do not believe in trying to downplay/changing a person to meet certain criterias. There is no need to create any casuistry about who and what Adam is.

Johnny Depp has won People’s Sexiest Man Alive again. I think this fits right into our conversation. Johnny Depp, to me at least, is kind of androgynous. Yes, he can be very sexy but he definitely has feminine qualities. I’m not saying he’s gay…what I’m saying is he really doesn’t qualify as your standard “manly-man”. I think Depp is the perfect example of why women are drawn to Adam as well.

Good point Deirdre and you’re right! I actually LIKE someone like Adam better than MOST of the “macho-manly” men because they seem less self-centered, if that makes any sense — i know Adam is acutely aware of his “Self” — but he doesn’t come across so … well — remember when we were kids, D, and when you were proud you’d breathe on your fingernails and buff them on your shirt or blouse…. HE’s not that way…but so many macho-men ARE “look at ME i’m so Manly” (omg i just flashed on “Bob”…)

Just had a further thought…. if i’m looking for “sexy” in a man, i want “sexy” to mean that i feel that i am a part of the sexiness, not that the guy thinks HE’s so sexy that it doesn’t matter if i am there or not…

ok, that’s close enough to x rated to leave alone now… see ya!!!

I heard that Depp is a real nice guy in person, but a bit on the smelly side. Ladies, I’m nice (in person) and I don’t smell funny.

Nana, it will be great to live in that world, I’m looking forward to it. I think we will be there someday, but I don’t think we are quite there yet. We’re not too much beyond the days where gay men had to appear straight, or claim to be bisexual in order to be accepted, and we are still in the days where gay bashing takes place. It’s easier to be famous and gay in Hollywood then it is to be an average man walking down the street holding the hand of another man. We have a long way to go.

Good morning. Thanks, Nana. I am getting better, slowly but surely. I will probably only work a half day again. And, I choose to celebrate each new day as it comes with a “tabula rasa.” So, cherie, to answer your question from yesterday, yes, there are several of us here who follow SYTYCD, as do I. I love Russell, too, although I have not cemented a loyalty to any one dancer yet. It will be interesting tonight to see who goes. And, welcome to the blog, cherie.

I hope Ryan does more to protect himself than just take out restraining orders. Had a shocking e-mail from my daughter-in-law in D.C. a few minutes ago, with a link to AJC story “Man shoots 2, kills one in Rome”.

My d-i-l, C., writes: “The guy in this story is someone I graduated from high school with. I never thought he’d be capable of doing something this heinious. Tim was never violent in school and was from a very nice Rome family. They were prominent business owners in the community. This was not some kid from the wrong side of the tracks.”

According to C.’s best friend in Rome, this Tim beat up his former girl-friend Holly. The next day, Holly and her father took out a restraining order. The father went over to talk to his daughter’s assailant, and was killed. The killer then drove to Holly’s sister’s home, where he knew she was staying, forced his way in and shot the sister’s husband in the back. Holly, meanwhile, had managed to sneak up into the attic with her sister and the sister’s baby and escaped unharmed.

There is only so much a restraining order will do.

C. writes: “You think you know someone, Then boom – they are strangers. Even though Tim did something horrible it still feels like he just died too, and maybe in a sense he did. His life is over. He’ll be in jail the rest of his life. His family is suffering something awful, and all of his friends are grieving terribly – especially since the Davis family, his targets, were also friends with many of my fellow graduates.”

C. ends, plaintively, “I now personally know a murderer. It’s hard to say that.”

JT – You are correct in what you said. There are hoardes of people out in there that will never accept homosexuality, even if their child, sibling or another family is gay. What they fail to recongize is that a gay person is just that. A living breathing human being. Do I belive in it? No, but I also have enough respect for those that do. A gay person doesn’t put down my sexual perference and in return, I don’t put theirs down. I have a very good friend who is gay and believe me, I had rather have him as a friend as some straights. I think what we as people should focus more energy on, is all the pedophiles, rapists, murderers and such. These are the ones that are kidnapping, raping and murdering our children. We have to face the fact that homosexuality will never, ever be extirpated.

That would be upsetting Mercedes. I was just thinking (since we haven’t commented on the Ryan issue) that restraining orders don’t keep people away, they just allow the state to act when they have been violated. Hopefully Ryan has splurged on a quality security team.

I was just reading an article in People.com and Carrie Underwood refuses to cohabitate. She said the only man she’ll live with is her hubby. I have to give her credit. Someone with that much fame and money is sometimes tempted to give up values they were raised with. Carrie is obviously our modern-day Sandra Dee.

The ocean water deal isn’t terrible…tho, you do have to rinse it gets kinda itchy. I was raised at the beach before coming to Jawja.

I do give Carrie credit for not moving in with her boyfriend. At the same time, neither one are really “home” a lot, so living together would be kinda hard. But she does seem to have really strong Christian values…I like that about her.

S-I-L is doing better, but still not out of the woods. But she may get moved out of ICU in the next couple of days.

I’ve got either a cold or sinus infection… so not feeling 100% – which explains the bad joke that follows (for which I apologize in advance.)

A man who had led a less-than-stellar life went to the local convent to seek mercy and forgiveness. The mother superior told him that he needed to go to another convent outside Sydney, Australia.

He flew (first class) to Australia, and reported to the mother superior. She told him that he needed to go out into the woods and find Koala bear droppings. He then needed to bring them back, and the droppings would be brewed into tea, which he would then drink and thereby receive mercy.

The guy went out to the woods, and followed a Koala bear for days, until he was able to positively identify the droppings, and gather them up.

He brought the droppings back and presented them to the mother superior. She placed them into a cup, and pour in some boiling water. She waited a few moments, then handed the cup back to the man.

The man looked as the nasty brew, with twigs and berries and all sorts of nasty stuff. He asked the mother superior if he was supposed to drink it like that.

“Yes” she replied.

“I can’t even run it through a strainer or a filter?”

“No, my child,” the mother superior answered sweetly. “After all… the kola tea of mercy is not strained.”
