New Danny Gokey single, Kellie Pickler on ‘Extreme Makeover’

Danny Gokey’s first single “It’s Only” came out last week on a Milwaukee country radio station.

According to mtv.com, the single was written by members of Lady Antebellum and produced by Mark Bright (who has worked with Carrie Underwood.). Gokey’s album is set to be released by RCA Nashville in March of next year.

The song details the trials of the jobless and the homeless and doesn’t shy away from the topic of faith, either (sample line: “Repo man’s gonna take his van/ Bobby’s givin’ up on God”).

Here’s the interview, with a low-quality recording of the song, which starts at about the 4 minute mark. Naturally, it’s a ballad. We knew Danny loves his ballads. It’s signature Danny. Will it get radio airplay? I have no clue, but country radio has been especially kind to “Idol” folks. What do you think?

-Shame on me! I didn’t realize Kellie Pickler was going to be on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” last night and did not DVR it. MJ has some clips. Pickler helps out an Oklahoma man in a wheelchair with polio who inspires others with his athleticism and charity.

Former Grant Park man Ty Pennington in this clip annoys Kellie Pickler at the 3:30 point. At the 4 minute point, she is seen breaking stuff apart. “I didn’t know what was getting into me,” she said. “I was like the Hulk! I was tearing things up!”

Later, she scores the only basket for Ty’s team against a wheelchair baksetball team and then sings. She looks great!

-Adam Lambert broke up with his boyfriend, according to this Daily News piece.

-My interview with David Cook is next Monday at 3 p.m. so Cook fans, keep emailing those questions in at rho@ajc.com. I’ll give you full credit for the question if I use it and tell David your name if you’d like.

Thanks for the news on Danny. The song is just ok, imo. Nothing special.

Pickler, as always, ups the “adorability quotient” on any show.

Went by WalMart yesterday, saw a sign “Kris Allen New Album 11/17, Adam Lambert 11/24, Allison Iraheta 12/1″ (or something like that, i didn’t memorize the dates, but they’re about a week apart, in that order)

Allison’s is out on the 1st? Nice, I didn’t realize that.

Wait, Adam has an album coming out too? I wonder why there hasn’t been any press about it… ;)

Thanks for the news about Danny. I really enjoyed his song, and noticed that he has a better quality version up at his new official website dannygokey.com.
I think this song really suits the strengths of Danny’s distinctive voice, and ability to project an emotional intensity and connection in his singing. Looking forward to the rest of his album!

Danny news, yeah! I LOVE that single. Beautiful song and the truest to the artist out of all the Idols singles so far! Love, love Its Only.

Never was a Gokey fan, but I like this song. Matches his voice and persona. Wish Adam had stayed as true to himself. Voiceboxed “For Your Entertainment” sounds like any singer out there today.

Good Morning Everybody.

Today’s Quote: “People are very open minded about new things and changes – as long as they’re exactly like the old ones.”

I like Danny’s song and hope it does well for him.

Haven’t had much time to post lately, but hope to have more time later. However, I can always depend on you regulars (and others) to keep things going.

Morning!

I’m a little like Nana.. I haven’t had much posting time available.

I assume that everyone has tried to greet tropical depression Ida with a smile this morning. Let’s hope her visit is short!

I’ll try to find the video that Rob mentioned and post it.

Lovely picture of Syesha Mercado on front page of New York Time’s Arts Section, being fitted for one of the 17 wigs she wears in a new production of “Dreamgirls” at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Syesha plays Deena Jones, the Dreamgirl who supplants Effie as the lead singer. Beyoncé played her in the movie. Good interview too, with Syesha and 2 other actresses.

Thanks, D. for clean version of the Gokey single. It’s way better than the Kris’s doom-and-gloom one… and… better, even than Adam’s “happy” song.

morning gang, i too have been simply swamped at work … but i peek in every once in a while to get a “fix”

smile, Deirdre? nope. a serious groan and moan and struggle to get out of bed and face yet MORE liquid. And since we’re not in Florida, I can’t even call it “liquid sunshine”. Ugh.

still trying to figure out how to fete my hubby this weekend… we’ll have to celebrate Sunday, which will be the 1st day of the 41st year, so…

New blog entry up this miserable rainy morning! Just be happy to know that Simon Cowell last year was pocketing about $1 million a week while Ryan was in the $700,000 range.

“It’s Only” is tailor made for the kind of music Danny has always represented himself with as a performer. It is also the kind of song that is tailor made for Country pop fans – in the mode of Rascal Flatts. And it has the whole distinctive Mark Bright and Lady Antebellum production all over it. This is not the type of song that will likely be a huge hit in the mainstream, teeny bopper, hip hop, MTV rock crowd. But that was never the intent. Danny accomplished what he needed to do with the debut single – that is, keep the fans happy but also reach out to new fans in Country Music. “It’s Only” works because Danny stayed trued to who is as an artist. This is a very topical song and with it’s holiday release, I can see this being a big win for Danny.

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. Dare I say that Danny’s single – amongst those idols who have released so far – is the most representative who of he is as an artist? The first thing I thought after I heard it was that it’s Danny – the raspy voice, the soaring parts, the phrasing, the lyrics. I think it’s a song tailor-made for him, which is why I think this single actually works. I have never considered myself a hardcore Danny fan or a Country fan, but this is good work right here. Out of all the songs that have been released from this year’s idols, I actually think this is the best. Wow, who would have thought?
