The laid-back, dreadlocked “American Idol” finalist Jason Castro performed a six-song set Friday night at Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville. He was in town to promote his upcoming album for Atlantic Records.

Castro strolled down the food court, guitar around his shoulders, three cops and two mall security guards in tow. The crowd of about 250 tittered, then cheered. (Not surprisingly, he drew a 95% female audience.) He was his typical “aw shucks” self, giving away an X Box via text message and announcing his release date of his album as January 2010 (though he almost said February, which worried some anxious fans.)

He sang two of his more memorable “Idol” songs “Hallelujah” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as well as four cuts from his new album, including “Let’s Just Fallin Love Again.” Afterwards, he signed T-shirts, guitar pics and posters for an hour.

Below, he performs his signature cover of “Hallelujah.”

Here he is doing his single “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again.”

And this is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Here are some more photos I took at the event:

Wow! Jason speaks in whole thoughts! I’m not a big fan but I appreciate that you provided a number of videos and pictures. He still seems like a really nice guy and I’m happy that he’s doing well.

I’m still not comfortable with the dreds. Yes, I know they’re clean but Jason has a very soft face with very beautiful eyes and I think he would look a little more masculine without the dreds. Not trying to start a fan war…just my opinion and I know that others feel differently.

Wait, I didn’t know I could go to the mall and meet Rodney. No fair, when is Rodney coming to a mall near me?

Thanks for the pics and videos, but thanks most of all for pointing out that he drew more than 2 people.

Thanks for the pics, Rodney. Glad that some can see that Jason can articulate like everyone else. He told Juliet Huddy on the “Morning Show with Mike and Juliet” that he scored 1340 on his SAT; so he is not a dummy. I like him with or without the dreads. And yes, more than 2 people in the whole country like him and have shown that by coming to his concert. Can’t wait for that cd. Go Jason!

Although I am a much older fan, I was supposed to see you at Discover Mills in GA last Friday 10-23. Everything in the world came against me and I was so hurt because that was my b-day gift, just to hear your voice! You are truly a very blessed young man with such awesome talent! I am a classical pianist and music is such a part of me. Your music touches my soul! Hope you’ll come this way again soon! Hope you enjoyed Charleston, SC, my fav place in the entire world!!! Keep your faith!!! Blessings!
