This is a very interesting discussion. I have nothing substantive to add, since arguments for one choice or another are all viable, depending on the criteria you choose. I just wondered that no one mentioned the forgotten Melinda, who I still think was the best singer that year. does anyone know whether or not she's had any success?

I'm sorry but i believe Allison Iraheta should be on that list - she has come out with some rockin song and she gots tons of fans to follow her but thats just my oppinion and also believe Jordin Sparks should be higher on the list because she has done way much more than Kelli Pickler and David Cook but thats just what i think but other than that i think the list is great!!! ; )

It has been pointed out that Clay Aiken actually made cover of Rolling Stone before Ruben, making him the first to appear before the winner. In addition, Clay has set records that have yet to be broken to date. I don't think he's the most successful but he's doing pretty well for himself. With the coming release of his first Decca CD, there's definitely going to be a change.

Here's my top 5 list: Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Jen Hudson.

My #1 idol has been and always will be David Cook! I will truthfully say there have been more successfuly idols then David such as the obvious Daughtery, Carrie and kelly but David is the ultimate idol in my opinion. He not only the most talented but just a great person overall. I have never enjoyed a CD more then his I listen to it atleast twice a day and there is not a bad song on the CD. He is amazing to watch perform in concert makes you leave wanting more. I believe in the future he will be giving these other idols a run for there money. No on beats cook in my book and he will always be #1 as far as I am concerned.

"Okay, he has not released an album yet, much less finish it."

Ugh! People get this wrong all the time and it drives me batty. If you're going to use "much less" please understand that whatever follows "much less" should be "much more" than whatever preceded it.

Finishing an album is a prerequisite to releasing an album; therefore it makes no sense to say "much less finish it", because in fact you CAN finish an album without releasing it. Finishing an album is NOT "much less" than releasing it!

The proper phrasing would have been "Okay, he has not even finished an album yet, much less released it."

David Cook is the most talented and has the most charisma and stage presence. He has been touring for 8 months and 131 concert under his belt. Playing to full houses and gained many new fans. He shows his feelings and sensitivity when he performs, seeing him live is an awesome experience. He is a genius writing and rearranging music. He has a platinum album and two platinum singles in his first year on his own. He is the ultimate American Idol.

I want to jump in here and say that one thing bothers me about the sales numbers. What many may or may not know. Is that RCA after an AI season is over is going to support and promote whomever they want. There have been many good CD's produced by past contestants but because no one is willing to "pay" for the records to be heard, they will not be heard. There have been certain winners and runners-up who have done very well and for only one reason. Radio was "payed" to have them played. It is no longer about calling up and requesting someone, you hear who they want you to hear. Those are the ones that sell well, such a shame because a lot of great music just gets lost in the "business at hand". Okay off my soapbox!
