Actress Kristin Chenoweth next Idol guest judge, Blake Lewis headlining Atlanta Pride

The next guest fill-in judge is Kristin Chenoweth, an actress and singer. Most recently, she had a starring role in the whimsical (but now cancelled) “Pushing Daisies” on ABC. She will show up in Orlando.

As People noted:

Chenoweth brings considerable vocal chops to the judges’ panel: An original cast member of the Broadway smash Wicked, she performed a solo sold out concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in 2007 and won a Tony award for her performance in the musical You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. –Lisa Ingrassia

She’s easily the least known of the guests so far. I have no clue if she’ll be any good or not.

Shockingly, not a single fresh Paula Abdul rumor this week.

And as we know, “Idol” is dead set on a fourth judge. Names thrown out (with absolutely no proof whether they were even approached) include Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper and Jody Watley.

-Both Bo Bice and Ace Young will be back on the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon Labor Day weekend. Yes, Jerry Lewis is still alive.

-Southern Voice reports that Blake Lewis will be headlining the Atlanta Pride Festival. He’s set to perform Sunday November 1. He has never done a solo gig that I know of in Atlanta. The one time he had a concert set up was cancelled. I’ve never had a one on one with the man so I’ll finally have my chance.

I had no clue Blake is a gay icon. Is he?

Thanks for the info Rodney.

Maybe your dogs and my dogs could get together for a play date today. Mine are not happy about the rain either.

I still think Cyndi Lauper would make a great judge(if it’s absolutely necessary). She would bring some of Paula’s loopiness and some real intelligence to the table.

Happy (Rainy) Friday, y’all!

Kristin on Idol is gonna be awesome. She’s just too funny for words…

D, Megan Fox? I don’t get that. I know, shocking. It just seems to me like she’s trying too hard to be the next Angelina Jolie. I’m not feeling it. Catwoman? Well, it worked wonders for Halle Berry…we’ll see.

Those are intresting choices, but Queen Latifah has already said that she thinks Paula is irreplaceable, so I’m not sure there. ‘Course it could be to throw us off. Queen Latifah and Kara, tho, that could be an interesting combination.

Rodney, you definitely made me laugh with the “Jerry Lewis is still alive.” I know, it was wrong of me, but I was actually surprised to read that. Sorry, y’all.

LOL, Blake Lewis is a gay icon? Um….well, not to MY knowledge. I mean, clearly, I’m the resident expert. By default. I guess he’s marginally welcomed to the fold. The “pretty boys” on Idol usually are. See: Kris Allen, David A., Daughtry (somewhat). But really, the biggest Idol gay icon is Kelly. So, why can’t we get HER for Pride? ;)

All this talk has me thinking, is it too early for a side of curly fries? :)

Biggest gay icon.. what about Adam??

And yes, Jerry Lewis is still alive (as is Jerry Lee Lewis) – but Ed McMahon won’t be around this year.

Who? Oh wait, she has pie! She is perfect.

Megan Fox is a great selection for every movie. Michael Bay discovered the secret formula: Megan Fox + Running in revealing clothing – One of the dumbest movies ever = Big Money!

Rumors went around regarding Blake a few years ago that he was gay. I’ve never heard that he addressed them, but it doesn’t really get any attention because the Blake Lewis is the American Idol that time forgot.

Jerry Lewis is still alive, but is Jody Watley? I know this crowd will rememer her, but does anyone else? She is the Blake Lewis of the 80’s pop scene.

Rickster, Adam is a gay icon in some circles. Others find him too out there…yes, imagine that.

JT, have you been hanging out with Mr. Hollywood? I do recall the rumors about Blake, but I haven’t heard anything since. I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

Um, who IS Jody Watley? I mean, I’m guessing I’ve heard some of her music? Was she a one-hit wonder? Am I showing my age? ;)

JTesla

Just to clarify: I don’t feel that anyone needs to address issues that are no ones buisness. Just pointing out what has been said.

Jody was a two or maybe three hit wonder, which is why she can’t even make it on one hit wonder shows.

The real question, JT, is did she actually bake the pie. If she did… she’s perfect. If she’s just holding it… she’s still pretty dang close to perfect. ;-)

Kristen Chenowith is an amazing performer and has an incredible voice. Both her Wicked performance and Charlie Brown performances were fantastic. She put out a Christmas CD last year that was pretty good as well. Pie oh my…she’ll be a great guest judge, having been through all those broadway auditions and her previous Miss America system pageant experiences. I’ll bet she’s heard quite a few missed notes in those local pageants to qualify as an AI judge.

Jody actually had quite a few hits….and won a Grammy for Best New Artist. “Looking For A New Love”, “Real Love”, “Everything”, “Don’t You Want Me”, “Some Kind of Lover”, “Still A Thrill”, etc….

I think Jody would make a great judge!

I am not sure if Blake IS a gay icon but by playing events like pride he will become one. His music definitely lends itself to that genre due to its “dancability”. A lot of artist like Robin S, Nikki French, even Kimberly find a loyal fan base. Also, a lot of artist that are common names “at the club” are very talented but never broke through top the 40 with more than one or two hits. Many of them also have long careers by releasing one or two dance/techno songs a year and having it remixed into a billion different versions.

And to add to what Mike said, she made music videos at a key time in my life (see Cold Hearted), so I will always remember her. However I can’t blame others for not knowing who she is. She doesn’t seem to get much airplay, even on 80’s-90’s stations.

Mmmmmm pie.

Kristin Chenoweth is highly regarded on Broadway and many other places. She is multi-talented and is a REAL singer – she’s got chops (not just pie). She has an incredible sense of humor, and more importantly – common sense.

Chenoweth sounds like a good choice. Just please, please, powers that be, don’t put Taylor Swift, subject of fawning story in today’s AJC, at the judges’ table!

Deirdre, glad you liked “District 9″, one of my favorites this summer. Other good choices this rainy weekend: “Ponyo” and Michael Keaton’s directorial debut, quirky “The Merry Gentleman”. BTW, who grades the movies in the AJC movie section? “The Country Teacher” gets a B, even though it’s not been screened for review?

Bo and Ace on the MDA telethon? Cool! They are two of my favorite Idol contestants. It’s good to see that Idols from seasons past are still managing to get the occasional gig here and there. Being on that show guarantees nothing, so I’m happy that my favorites can still be found on TV.

I echo the sentiment of Kat…I have been a fan of Kristin Chenoweth for sometime now and this gifted songbird has vocal prowess and knows how to use it. American Idol is a singing contest–it’s refreshing to have such an accomplished vocalist chiming in. Hers will be an opinion worth listening to!

Deirdre

I tend to agree with all the Chenoweth praise. She’s a talented lady and won’t think that Broadway is a dirty word. Considering all the former Idols who now have Broadway roots, it’s probably a good thing that she’ll be judging a few of these kids.

Re The Country Teacher…I think the “not screened for review” was a misprint since the reviewer from the San Fran Chronicle had obviously seen the film.

Kristin Chenoweth is very talented – and so funny too. She is often on Ellen and she cracks me up. Add her as the 4th judge and I will be fine with that.
Blake Lewis as a gay icon – no, didn’t hear about that – but a gig is a gig is a gig – right!?
Man, what happened to Old School Friday? If you are gonna talk about Jody Whatley, you should post one of her songs…

Jerry Lewis has been on EVERY season of the MDA telethon. He pretty much invented it! …Oh, you were asking about that other Mr. Lewis? …Crap! That was the mostly forgettable AI season six.

Rickster, I have a slight amendment to your plan: bring on the judge who comes on stage wearing only a bikini while holding a pie. Oh and Randy is excluded from this little exercise.

Highlander, two Blake Lewis stories after two years of nothing is a clear sign. However, the zombie king still needs to be buried and then “night creatures calling, the dead start to walk in their masquerade. There’s no escaping the jaws of the alien this time (they’re open wide). This is the end of your life” – Thriller.

With all that said, I do hope Rodney can secure an interview with Blake. I’ll behave.

Here’s a quote from Neil Patrick Harris on his Idol judge stint:

I was more than a little intimidated by Mr. Cowell. It’s his show, you know, so when you’re on that panel, I was wondering if it’s impolite to disagree with him, on a business level. He could wander over to the producer and whisper something and you’re suddenly gone and Joe Jonas is back. But I asked him, “Is it okay if I disagree with you?” And he said, “Yes, do whatever you want. The one thing that you should know is that we’re totally winging it. We have no idea what’s going on. We have no idea what we’re doing here. We just judge the people as we see them.” Which I kind of thought was a joke. In point of fact, it really isn’t. I thought there was a lot more shady dealing going on in there. I thought they would say, “This is one that we held for two years, this is a ringer, we want to keep him in,” or, “Go to town on this one.” There’s nothing going on. It’s exactly like it is. There’s the four of you on the table with the red Coca-Cola cups.

Hubby ans I went to see (500)Days of Summer. Really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the interview Heather. NPH says 4 hours? Well it was a given that the judges didn’t work two days straight from sun up to sun down, but only 4 hours? So that is 8 hours a city split over two days, a little longer hours during Hollywood and then a few hours a week after that. Great gig.

I don’t want to give everyone the impression that I am some sexist pig. So to be honest when I look at that picture of Carrie all I see is her personality… her ample personality. I better go look at the picture again to find out what else I see in it.

JT, I would have thought more than 4 hours as well. They make it out to be an all-day thing once the editing is done. On the one hand, I think nice gig, but on the other hand, it kind of makes me mad about all of the “I’m bored” commentary from them when judging at this stage. If they really can’t sit and listen to pre-screened auditioners for 4 measly hours, that’s pretty obnoxious.

Kristin Chenoweth simply makes me sick. She casually used the term “retard” on The Today Show a couple of years ago, and never issued an appology. I have no use for her–and she has no talent.
