Well, we will be back to three judges after all.
Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol, Fox confirmed to ew.com. Abdul also said so on her Twitter page.
Wow. I didn’t see that coming. I thought all that bemoaning about “Idol” not treating her well was a negotiating ploy. And back in July, she seemed fairly optimistic things would work out. But perhaps she really couldn’t get the money she wanted and felt deeply hurt she wasn’t being compensated what she felt she deserved. The LA Times says she was getting paid $2 to $4 million a year and wanted a big raise. “Idol” was willing only to go to the $5 million range. (Ryan Seacrest doubled his annual pay to $10 million a year, plus $5 million a year for other rights.)
I’m kind of bummed to see her go in a weird way. She provided America with some darn good entertainment over eight seasons and is the first major on-air change for the show since season one, when Brian Dunkleman was dumped. Randy and Kara seem to duplicate each other. Paula provided a distinct, sweet personality compared to Randy and Simon.
On the bright side, we’ll have only three judges again. That means we’ll have a better shot at having shows finish on time.
Here’s Paula’s statement:
“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to IDOL. I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon. What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month. I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”
And Fox’s statement:
“Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”
Seacrest tweeted last night : about to go to sleep when I started seeing my blackberry blow up. I have read what u have read and I am shocked and saddened about paula
There is a slim chance “Idol” will pick up a fourth judge after all and rumors will probably be rampant the next few days who that might be. But the show starts the next round of auditions for season nine later this week so I doubt it.

Good Morning Everybody…….
Today’s Quote: “In life, all good things come hard, but wisdom is the hardest to come by.”
Good to be back in the grind of things. A quick update on my Dad. He’s out of CCU and doing much better. It was touch and go there for a couple days. His heart had stopped beating and he had stopped breathing twice, but thank God they were able to resuscitate him both times. I want to thank each and everyone of you who inquired about him and for all the well wishes. I appreciate them so much.
I haven’t had time to go back and read the blogs that I missed, but it seems like you all had a blast over the weekend. Wow, I was surprised at the number of posts.
I have to wonder if it really was Paula’s idea to leave or Fox’s. Either way, AI will not be the same without her and she will be missed. But keeping Kara?????????? Hopefully, someone can educate Randy on his volcabulary before January.

Has AI stated only 3 will judge this season? They should hire a credible and coherent female singer to replace Paula, be the positive critic some like and Simon can play off, and bring buzz for AI9.

Kara does not have the personality that Paula has. She is not sweet and little naive like Paula is. I think the ratings will go down a bit and when Simon leaves it will be over. Good luck Paula it has been great with you.

I think Paula and her new agent played a big bluff hand and AI called them on it! No way is she worth the money Simon or even Ryan is making! As stated before, where else is she going to get paid $2 million per year?! (Makes me wonder if her and the agent are sharing her meds!)
I will miss her simply for the comic relief but it will be great to be back to only 3 judges!

Kara is smarter, but that doesn’t make her a better fit for the show. Paula always aired on the side of supporting the contestants, and that is a necessary counterweight to Simon. Simon may be right 90% of the time, but you still need the counterweight. Also, Paula and Simon could argue without making the audience feel anxious about it. When Simon and Kara fight, and I am sure they will do so more next season, when those two fight it is more unsettling and will likely turn the audience off, rather than entertain them. These types of shows are all about chemistry, and the chemistry will likely take a turn for the worst next year.

Paula never gave any good advice or real criticism. Everyone she commented on was “just wonderful.” You knew anytime a cute looking guy ws coming up that the Cougar would sit up and make you uncomfortable with the way she’d lust after him!
She really does need pshycological help – all the problems she’s had over the past couple of years have made her very unstable.
Nice lady, but she’s not a judge.

Morning!
Nana…good news about your dad!
I’m a little disappointed that Paula had to go. I would much rather see Kara or Randy leave. However, since I absolutely HATED the 4 judge system, I will have to rejoice that we won’t be saddled with 4 judges this season. And I can see why Idol would choose Paula. She has been a source of trouble since the second season. Allegations of misconduct with contestants, drug and alcohol use, her general incoherence, and her “strange” relationship with Simon have all piled up against her.
But, in my opinion, they got rid of the wrong one.

Glad your dad is doing better Nana. I finally got one right. AI gave us Kara this year to move Paula out next year. I am really sad to see her go. I cant imagine she did this b/c she had other irons in the fire. I wish her the best. Truthfully she really is not worth the money that Simon makes; even though he has used zinging her to help make him worth the payload he gets. Didnt care for Kara this season, so next will seem so strange. When is paula needed to help judge? Unless it is today, we still have time to get her back and lose Kara! No way do I want 4 judges, but hate to see Paula go. I know the misuse of the drugs and the weird comments were part of this. Sometimes it is just time for a fresh start and time to move on to bigger and better things.

From the looks of the picture posted with the story, she looks like she may be doing a remake of the Bride of Frankenstein. Usually a shake up like this signals the demise of a show. I say maybe two seasons left of this show being the ratings bonanza that it is today.

We all pretty much surmised last year that Kara was brought on to replace Paula. Now that it has happened, I’m just a little sad. The contestants always looked to Paula to help them feel better. She had a definite purpose and she will be missed.

As for this Paula mess, I’m sad to see her go. At the very least, she was supportive and encouraging to the kids who audition and perform. If she’s really gone, I hope they don’t hire a fourth judge. Folks, American Idol is over with this announcement. It will be cancelled in 2 years. Then, what will happen with all of your dull lives since there will be nothing to blog about anymore. I can’t get over all the sad sacks that post on this blog day and night. Do any of you have jobs or gainful employment? I understand that Abdul is leaving Idol to go into films. Her first one is the cougar version of Two Girls, One Cup. She should be great at it; she always had poo coming out of her mouth on the show while she talked – now we can see her literally eat poo. Abdul won’t be missed and it will be nice to see this show finally go away. We don’t need anymore Taylor Hicks out there thinking they can actually sing for a living. HA!

Idol has made a mistake. When you start giving people outrageous contracts to some and not others, then you need to rethink things. You’re going to pay Simon double digits to be a jerk, while you would pay Paula probably less that the new girl. Kara is dull. She offers nothing. At least when Paula is on pain killers, she’s entertaining. To be honest, I only like watching the auditions now in order to see the cast of idiots that come through and learn they cannot sing and still believe they can. I can honestly say that I have never bought a single album by any of these singers. I think I would be more impressed if there were artist coming on and singing original material that could be made into hits, not just glorified karaoke.

Hey y’all!
Nana, thanks for the update on your dad. I’m glad to hear he’s doing better…and will continue to keep y’all in our thoughts.
As far as the whole Paula leaving, I am slightly surprised. I have watched every single season and saw her progressively get worse…until they brought Kara and she seemed to up her game. I will miss her, but it will be interesting to see the dynamic when we revert back to one girl in the panel. I am waiting to see what Simon’s response it to this. I know a lot of people who referenced his quote about not wanting to do the show without Randy and/or Paula.
As far as the 4th judge, I definitely think we don’t need one…what I do think would be quite an interesting twist would be the idea floated on this blog about former Idols as “guest” judges. Or even as mentors, at least the more sucessful ones…Kelly was a mentor on Canadian Idol. I can see Carrie doing Country Week, Daughtry or Cook for rock week, maybe bring Taylor for Broadway, etc. (and I realize that I included Taylor as “successful”
)
I definitely think they need to include the former Idols in a more unique way than just singing. They should see that the vast majority of people who will watch this next season are returning viewers. I honestly don’t see a lot of new watcher. The show’s been on for ages, and saturated pop culture. At this point, either you like it and watch, or you don’t.

D, thanks for your intelligent insight. Please be sure to let Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Fantasia and Jordin Sparks know that all they will ever do is dinner theatre. Between the many platinum albums between them, not to mention Grammy awards and an Oscar, they must have gotten confused.
Don’t let facts get in the way of your bitterness.
Yes, Adam lost. Yes, Adam will have a good career. So will others. Adam doesn’t do the moan and groan, nor, based on all he has said, does he have anything but respect for the other contestants. Why can’t that attitude extend to his fans?

Paula is either a complete and total idiot, or has a monster tell-all book deal that will put $5 million for doing nothing to shame. Either way, I’m glad we’re down to three judges, and, sweet as she may be, Paula the babbling nut job needed to go away a long time ago. Kara gives the show the “street cred” Paula just doesn’t provide for today’s contestants, and now that the format goes to three I expect her to shine.

Despite Paula’s flaws…which are many…she brought something to the table which no other judge has been able to do. She was a calming influence on the contestants. Sometimes a disastrous performance would set them on edge and Paula had a way of cushioning the blow. She would never deny that the performance was bad but she’d have a way of making it seem ok.
If anything, it’s the contestants who will miss Paula the most.

I’m wondering if this was the plan all along. Toward the end of the season, Paula became unusually prominent in a couple of shows – playing choreographer to the idols on one and performing on another. I wonder if that was the producer’s way to arrange Paula’s swan song and let her leave on a high note.

I knew when they brought Kara on that Paula’s days were numbered. I think it was really over for her in 2008 when she made her infamous gaffe about critiquing Jason Castro’s second song.
Fox probably just went through the motions of negotiating with her for appearances sake.
I do think they are making a mistake, however. The show just won’t be the same without her.

Good morning -
A few points: First, I really don’t understand the insults and scarcasm that comes with this blog. If someone doesn like the show, then don’t watch it. If you don’t like the fact that people blog about it, then don’t open the blog. It’s real simple! There are lots of other shows you can watch, or other things to do rather than watch tv. So if you don’t like Idol or it’s following – then just step away! Why on earth would it anger someone because others do like it and follow it????
Back to the topic – I’m sad that Paula is leaving. I don’t think Kara has the right personality for the show. She’s dull. Doesn’t add anything in my opinion.
BUT – I’m really sad that our society has reached a point where a celebrity would leave a show because $5 Million isn’t a high enough salary!!!!!! Who cares what the others are making? Who cares of Ryan will be making more? He does a different job. I’m sure Simone gets paid the most. Paula’s salary should be in line with Randy’s – and maybe Kara’s. (I would think Kara would be less being the nubbie.)
But regardless, if she feels $5 Million isn’t enough to work a few months out of the year, then maybe it’s best she go elsewhere to find more!
I don’t care who the judges are. It’s the only reality show that involves real talent. I’ll always be a fan.

For those who doesn’t like AI or this blog, then this isn’t the blog for you. In fact, we won’t be offended if you decide to leave and not come back.
Most of us (about 98%) here are gainfully employed full time and have a life outside of AI and this blog. This is just our way to enjoy the show better. Our lives are NOT DULL, as it was stated in an earlier post. In fact, we are more alive and less dull than some who come here and make snarky remarks. I’ll miss Paula in some ways — like Deirdre, I think she added something to the panel of ‘tators, but having said that, I also think that she needed, for HER sake, to simply move on.
To answer some negative type person earlier, the picture of Paula is from her stint as a Judge on that show that was filmed (is being?) in Peachtree City — something Diva… about a blonde bimbo type who dies and is resurrected into the body of a plus-size smart lawyer type but is still aware of who “she” is. I’ve caught a couple of episodes, and actually, it’s not bad. Some VERY Funny Moments. Like when her best friend (from the bimbo days) takes the new body out to the fancy pick-up bar and the new body is soooooo totally rejected — and at the same time, the new body/lawyer is handling a case where a waitress gains weight and is fired — from that same bar. verrrrrry capable handling of the legal maneuvers imho.

I’m still stuck on the fact that AI is paying Ryan Seacrest all that money….for what??? Paula will be missed when the season begins….just wait and see!!!
I agree with the others who’ve stated that the addition of Kara was a huge drag on the energy of the show. I truly believe that AI is on a downward trend and probably has run its course as far as seriously launching any sustainable musical careers in the future.

Thanks Deirdre. I hope they finally get off that island and return to their normal lives.
I don’t understand why they’re waiting sooo long before airing the last season…
Kate will finally have to decide who she wants to marry. Her only choices are Sawyer and the “Doc.”

natty… you are right nobody watched the show because of Ryan. Nobody watched the show because of Paula. Ryan is paid more because he has more talent at what he does.

Fall Season….When the producers of Lost decided to announce when the show would end in advance, they also decided that they wanted to run the episodes without reruns. Because Lost is difficult and complicated to film, one year passes between the beginning of one season and the beginning of the next.

I think most people have no CLUE what Ryan actually has to do to host AI, and since he’s not all dramatic like Probst, he usually stays more shadowed — Hosting a LIVE show, not only having to maintain some semblance of order between the 3/4 judges, but also having to interview and put up with thousands of idiots who audition … and a few nice guys too, i suppose, deserves recognition and appropriate pay. I’d love to see some of the naysayers try to DO Ryan’s job for just one week — no — one day! While I will agree that there may be others who could do as well, I think our lil ol’ Ryan Seacrest has done an amazing job of keeping his cool, keeping the show moving for the most part, and segueing from one thing to the next with a semblance of grace and patience. Lord knows I’d be b*slapping paula and simon and stuffing a gag in randy’s mouth at times! so does Ryan deserve more than Paula? imho, absolutely! I think an interesting “bio” episode to air on some reality network would be to follow Ryan around for 1 week during the AI season, or maybe 2 weeks – one week of auditions, and one week in the middle of the season. I doubt you could GET a weeks worth of stuff about AI following Paula or Randy around! The key here is AI-related stuff during that same week compared to what Ryan must have to do.

I don’t think I’ll be watching Idol anymore! Paula is a bit naive, but a relief after some of the other comments!

Late start this am… first, wonderful news about your dad, Nana.
Second, word to Nana’s 9:29 post and Linny’s 9:43.
Last, on a previous thread I longed for an agent to smooth my professional path. Now, after reading about Paula’s idiot adviser, who told her to nix a $5 million offer from AI, I’m glad I’m agent-less. I will miss Paula for her quirkiness, drug-induced or not, and her kindness to the contestants. Kara may have some knowledge about the music business, but she’s basically just a more verbal version of Randy.

You all are terrible people and I wish nothing but the worst for you. You stink like cream of wheat soup when you watch Idol. I bet all of you have no friends, no lives and live with a bunch of cats. Stupid cat people losers.

It is hard to believe Seacrest seems to be worth more to the producers of Idol than Paula. If it is the ultimate goal to kill off the program then this is the right move.
The interplay between Paula and Simon is what made the show – without her it is nothing.
Kara DioGuardi just doesn’t fit and adds nothing – if Paula is gone then you can be sure I’ll not waste my time tuning in.

Stupid cat people losers! LOL I love how Lane is trolling Idol blogs filled with the cat people losers, I’d say more but I need to go eat my cream of wheat soup.
Katty, do you think that maybe what “made the show” was contestants singing? Hard to believe I know, but it does seem that the show involves a lot of that. Of course you are probably right, the show got as big as it did based only on the Paula vs. Simon dynamic.

LOL, aptly named you are, “Net” — for you’ve just stated the “net” result of Paula leaving the show, Kara joining the show, and every other change that’s occurred in 8 years…. sooner or later the show will go to that great show graveyard in the sky, but for now…. bottom line…the show will go on!

Linny, I have forty cats. I figure that when I die I’ll save everyone the trouble of dealing with my remains as the cats will take care of that. Of course nobody will know that I’m gone for a good two months after the fact because lets face it between the smell of cream of wheat and butter they won’t be able to tell that I’m gone. I’ll have set my DVD to play a continuous loop of the “Paula Abdul is the only reason for the success of American Idol Show.”
Ok, seriously, I’m just not that upset about Paula. Sorry folks, I know she was really nice and she added a nice dynamic, but someone needed to go. Miss Liability was the perfect choice. Well actually Randy was the perfect choice, but he doesn’t sleep with contestants (at least he doesn’t sleep with contestants who write tell all books)

She was the best reason to watch the program. Occasionally a talent popped on the show.
