Paula Abdul to guest on Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” in Peachtree City, Blake Lewis has an album coming

Paula Abdul will be in Atlanta for at least two reasons in the near future. She will be here soon to vet the Atlanta “American Idol” singers who made the cut after the recent auditions.

And now she will be playing a judge Nina Hodge, in a case about a store that refuses to carry plus-sized clothing, according to People magazine (written by a friend of mine Cynthia Wang.)

“I am very excited to guest star on Drop Dead Diva,” Abdul says. “All of the people are extremely talented and it’s a charming, wonderfully written new show.”

The show is kind of like a feminized version of “Heaven Can Wait.” Broadway star Brooke Elliott plays a lawyer in a dramedy about a shallow model who, after death, finds her soul inside the body of a smart plus-sized attorney named Jane.

- Blake Lewis has a 2nd album coming out called “Heartbreak on Vinyl” on October 6 via Tommy Boy Entertainment. Here’s from the press release:

“The title is an ode to all the record stores that have been closing down due to my industry eating itself. These are the stores that brought inspiration to all of us music lovers and have led me to make the music I create today. Heartbreak On Vinyl is filled with electro pop goodness, with melodies I cherish and that I hope my fans will sing to. It comes from the land of the broken hearted to help you mend lonely wounds.”

The publicist was amenable for me to interview him when the date gets closer. I’ve never had a chance to do a one on one with the man. I almost did when he had a concert scheduled in Midtown but it was cancelled.

Blake Lewis has a SECOND cd coming out? Gee, I must have missed the first one! Sorry, but he has to be THE weakest runner-up in the show’s history.

But he is right about the demise of the real record stores. They were a part of Americana. (Humorously exemplified in the movie, “High Fidelity”, with John Cusack and Jack Black.) It probably started with the big switch from vinyl to compact disc.

Maybe it’s just nostalgia on my part, but when you walked into your favorite, old-time record store, you definitely had a feeling of being home. Being closer to the music. And usually, there was someone there who could suggest some alternative sounds to meet your tastes, or turn you on to a new artist or group – sometimes local, sometimes just starting to break big nationally.

It’s a feeling of being involved or of belonging that you’ll never get from Napster, Rhapsody or the like.

Good Morning……….

In keeping with the 4th of July holiday, I thought I would quote Benjamin Franklin:

Today’s Quote: “Where liberty is, there is my country.”

There must be alot of people on vaction this week as the blog is slow and not much is happening. Only a few of us seem interested in posting. Maybe we all need some downtime.

Morning!

Paula? In Peachtree City? Could you elaborate on that?

Adding to Nana’s patriotic quotes, one that is attributed to Thomas Jefferson:

When people fear the government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

Good morning! The “old-time” record stores Highlander referred to were nice, but the really “old-time” ones that I remember from the Dark Ages were superb places where “hands-on” was the thing.

Lucky Woodpappy!

Re the slow blog. there’s not a lot of Idol news out there at the moment but the tour will start soon and the recaps, gossip and pictures will start showing up. People on vacation, people taking a blog break, or busy with “stuff” will pop in and out. This is about what last summer was like.

Re Blake. I always liked the guy…not much of a voice but a real style about his music that made it interesting to listen to. David Cook wasn’t the first Idol to change the way a song sounded…I think that honor belongs to Blake Lewis, who got my attention, not for his beat-boxing, but for his interesting interpretations of the music.

Speaking of David Cook — Harriett … i wasn’t able to be on much, what was that you said about the Cookie concert? email me! i just can’t stay on long enough to search for what you said before :-(

I enjoyed Blake as well. But I figure ultimately he should get into production, he’s got an interesting take on things for sure!

WP! Enjoy!!!

On a less happy note, the work my son thought he’d be doing may have been stopped — they want to test for (and clean up if necessary) asbestos in the old theatre which i suppose is a real possibility. oh well. at least he got a couple of days in!

y’all take care, maybe today won’t be QUITE so hot… well we can dream, right?

Woodpappy, I hope the ocean and beach trip do for you what it always, always, has done for me. It restores my soul and gives me a peace not found elsewhere. Lots of folks say the mountains do that for them, and that is probably true, but for me, it has always been the beach. I love it late in the afternoon after most of the people have left, and I love it again in the early morning, when the sun is just peeking over the horizon. Another thing for me is seeing a full moon reflected upon the water at night. I gotta stop! It’s making me homesick for the beach. I won’t be back there until the first week in August.

My kid told me he’d be spending the 4th on the beach…I thought that was just rude! :-) I’d go join him but… 25 years old, California, beach, beer, beautiful wannabe starlets parading in bikinis….doesn’t sound to me like he’d appreciate adding his mom to the mix.

Almost time to close up shop for the holiday.

I want to wish each and everyone a safe and happy 4th of July. Be safe no matter what you plan on doing and above all, please DO NOT drink and drive.

And, to the special people who have served or are now serving in the Armed Forces, many, many thanks to you for what you have done/doing for our country. Where would America be if it were not for people like you? I appreciate you all and what you have done for us. May God bless you.

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. ”

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Be back on Monday.

Sheesh!!! Where have I been? I haven’t heard anything about it…nothing in the local paper…Ashton Kutcher was here a few weeks ago for that movie he’s making in the area and the paper reported that.

Rodney, if you’ve got any insider info on this, please email me. I promise not to use your name! ;-)

Anyone looking for a good movie this weekend, “Public Enemies” is a great one! Johnny Depp continues to do amazing work, this time as John Dillinger. Billy Crudup is unrecognizable – and scary – as the nasty J. Edgar Hoover, and Christian Bale, Dillinger’s nemesis Melvin Purvis, has redeemed himself from the “Terminator” fiasco. Hot love story too, with Marion Cotillard as Johnny’s doomed gf.

I’ve been on site for “Drop Dead Diva.” Peach Buzz has done sightings of Margaret Cho all over town. I will be writing a big piece about it next week. Might even get to meet Paula Abdul again when she does her guest role next week.

BTW, I saw Public Enemies today and agree with Mercedes. Johnny Depp can do just about anything. Wasn’t all that impressed with Christian Bale…he’s kind of one note in a relatively thankless role. Lots of machine gun shooting for the action guys, good love story…almost a documentary tone. Billy Crudup gave J. Edgar just the right amount of sleeze without going overboard.

I agree, Harriett (8:26am post). I think Wax ‘N Fax is the only one left around. Back in the day, I also enjoyed Peaches (which was down by Peachtree Battle) and even Oz (which was on Cobb Pkwy).

Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July holiday!

Another good one, “Moon”. An old-fashioned – in the best sense – movie, with a character-driven plot, starring Sam Rockwell in a mystery that will be on your mind for days afterward.

Offkey, Blake Lewis is some emo guy who shares bad poetry on his myspace page. Oh wait, that is about 90% of all myspace users. I guess I can’t really help you with that one.

How is everyone doing? I’m back from Kansas. Have they put MJ in the ground yet?

Offkey – Blake Lewis was the runner up on Idol the year Jordan Sparks won. I think it was season 6.
