Interview with Kimberley Locke, host of “Gospel Dream,” Idol repeat ratings poor

Gosh. Things are awfully quiet here in “Idol” land this week, eh? I spoke with season two finalist Kimberley Locke a couple weeks ago and didn’t get a a huge amount of news out of her but she is co-hosting the Gospel Music Channel’s “Gospel Dream” show, which is basically “Idol” for gospel singers. (BET has a similar show called “Sunday Best”).

Like Matt Rogers (CBS’s “There Goes the Neighborhood”) and Kimberly Caldwell (TV Guide Channel), Locke is trying her hand at Seacrest-like hosting.

“I was very excited,” she said. “I’m just looking to expand my career into hosting and do more television. I was glad to be a part of it.” (The show has been pre-taped.)

She hopes the experience will lead down the road to her own talk show. “I need to start building a foundation to that,” she said. “It’s getting my feet wet in being in front of the camera hosting.” Ryan Seacrest, she said, “has inspired me.”

How much do you think Simon Cowell deserves to be a judge on "Idol"?

Locke, who finished third in 2003 and had one big single after the show (”8th World Wonder”), said she grew up in church singing gospel. She thought the show was interesting because it defined gospel very broadly, allowing for both black gospel and what’s called “contemporary” gospel more commonly sung by others.

She said she has considered doing a gospel record but hasn’t committed to that. But she is leaning on more of a standards record. “My favorites include Judy Garland and Etta James and Diana Ross and Patti LaBelle. The classic singers,” she said. “Nowadays, the singing is lost in all the production. I want to do an album to allow my voice shine.”

She is currently sans record label (like that matters in this day and age.). “I’m still doing some research… I think the possibilities are out there. I just have to find out what works best for me.”

Locke co-hosted with Mike Kasem. Yes, that’s Casey Kasem’s son. “He looks like his dad,” she mused, “which was really weird and bizarre. I was a big Scooby Doo fan… Michael was really nice.” She also found judge Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child) “bursting with energy.”

She says the show, compared to “Idol,” is “not meanspirited. But they didn’t spare any criticism. They are not biting their tongues at all.”

Her take on “Idol” six years later: “American Idol will always be a part of my life, a great part of my life. I have no regrets about it. I have nothing bad to say about it. It has given me so many opportunities. The show is still going strong.”

She is still buds with Ruben Studdard and said she has gotten close to Diana DeGarmo.

As for her post “Celebrity Fit Club” life, she said she’s managed to keep her weight down. It helps she’s still dating “Fit Club” judge and fitness coach Harvey Walden. “I may even try to lose a few more pounds,” she said.

The show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

-Not surprisingly, the “Idol” repeat of the Michael Jackson themed show Monday night only pulled in 4.2 million viewers. I get a sense most folks had had their fill of MJ by Monday anyway to see a repeat of a show from four months ago.

-I’m not making a big deal of a U.K. report that Simon Cowell could make as much as $144 million a year. He makes about $36 million now. I just don’t believe it. That seems excessive even given how much money Fox and Fremantle make on the show.

Well, I hope her show does well. I doubt I will watch it.
Harriett – from the last blog post – I will go with ya!!
As for the rerun of the show with the MJ songs….not only were people over it, it wasn’t Michael Jackson…it was other people doing MJ. I think it was doomed to begin with.

My dad is home and is doing better – thanks for all the well wishes!

Morning blogland — not much happening here — my kid who worked at the Ga Theatre has been called in to work for the next few weeks cleaning up — it looks like they’re going to utilize those of the staff who want to work to do a lot of the dirty stuff, but hey! it’s a paycheck! he says it’s pretty awful, going in there and seeing it all — or NOT seeing it all — post-fire. But i figure if they’re allowing “civilians” to work cleanup, the walls must have been found safe and sturdy — that’s a good sign towards something happening to raise money to rebuild, whether it’s a non-profit “save the theatre” group or investors joining in with the owner to rebuild — and while i am sure they will retain the atmosphere and look of the old theatre type building, it will be new, clean, and up to modern code inside — that’s not a bad thing, all in all!

catch ya later, gotta get some work done (hey! it’s letting me use THAT 4-letter-word!)

I am SO BUMMED OUT!! Tickets for the David Cook concert went on sale this morning at 10 AM, and I was right there at 10. The best available tickets were almost 20 rows back from the stage!! This is a big grandstand, so that vantage point is not good. I guess I am not going unless I can win some promotional tickets on the radio (which usually has scooped up the good seats in advance).

Lara, great news abt your dad, best of luck in future!

Watched tail end of the Rerun Idol show; at the snippet part at the very end, my husband and I looked at each other in mute how-could-he-possible-have-won despair when Kris Allen’s non-spectacular sample came on, and again, same reaction, but for different reason – how-the-heck-could-he-not-have-won! – when Adam Lambert belted out the only worthy Michael Jackson homage.
Too bad politicks got in the way of this year’s voting.

Idol is old stuff. I wasn’t tired of MJ news. Just of Idol. UGH
Simon should take a pay cut. Oh, I forgot to tell you. I dislike AI and Simon Cow and his mean self. I don’t watch it, because of Simon and his nasty mouth, Randy and his DAWG. Grow up Randy. Paula is fun sometimes, but not enough to make up for the others. I’ve never seen the 4th judge, but from what I’ve read, she isn’t much to write home about.

Glad your dad is better Lara and Linny, glad your son is getting to work at least some.

I watched the Bachelorette Monday instead of the re-run show, I think Jillian has lost her mind! (What was she thinking, keeping Wes?) On AGT last night I loved the 62 year old dancing woman, she was unique. My favorite so far would be the chicken catcher from Kentucky that sang If Tomorrow Never Comes.

AGT worked hard to make the chicken catcher the new Susan Boyle. He was good but not in the same way that Susan Boyle was good.

So Michael Jackson wants Diana Ross to raise his kids if his mother can’t. Interesting.

Lara – Glad your dad is home and doing much better.

Harm – Jillian needs to think about why she is keeping Wes. I really didn’t approve of Jake going to her and spilling the beans about Wes, but she should have listened and taken to heart why Jake did what he did. Next week Wes lets it slip about his “girlfriend” then corrects himself and says “exgirlfriend”. I hope Jake will be the next Bachelor. He is a hottie in his uniform. And what the heck did Edd have to come back for? He left on his own accord and wants back in!!!! Yeah, right.

Forgot this is joke day. Here is one:

The pre-k teacher was teaching her 4 year old students animal sounds. She asked Suzie what a cow says and Suzie reply “Moo”. Then she asked Bobby what a dog says and he replied “Woof Woof”, next she asked Sandy what a cat says and Sandy replied “Meow”. Next she asked Johnny what a duck says and Johnny replied “Aflac”.

Well, I tried to talk about David Cook, but nobody picked up on that one, D! :) Maybe it’s because I was bummed. I agree about Nana’s joke, but nobody wanted to talk jokes, evidently. Time for me to wrap up this day. SYTYCD tonight, along with AGT!!

Idol for gospel singers: definitely bottom three! Right along side Idol for Yodellers and Idol for Hog Callers.

I’m watching the show now, for the first time and find it very boring. I’m surprised they still have J Moss as a judge for the show after his scandal.
