6/4: Danny Gokey interview, sales numbers

If Idol goes back to three judges, what would your favorite combo be?

Danny Gokey, as usual, comes across as down to earth and realistic in his interview with Rolling Stone:

Your first auditions made you an early favorite for winning the whole competition. How did being a front-runner so early on affect you?
I think it harmed me. The front-runner never wins on the show — that’s just what happens because there’s so much expectation. When there’s a lot of expectation on someone, people can get disappointed. In the beginning I paid attention to the blogs because I wanted to hear what people were saying, but after a while there was too much analyzing. People are fickle, so I had to let that go so I could remain true and consistent to myself.

- Idol Chatter shows some sales numbers which provide mixed signals who might outsell who: Adam Lambert or Kris Allen. Kris is outselling Adam with digital tracks. But the “Season 8 Favorite Performances” albums show Adam outselling Kris.

-Ruben Studdard’s album sales dropped 68% to just 5,000 and 20K total. Big come down from his past releases.

-Jennifer Hudson for whatever reason has kept her pregnancy under wraps. This site claims the friend who (on the record) commented about her baby shower might be booted from the wedding. That’s Oprah harsh!

linny, I know what you mean about is it really suicide. He was hanging and had been dead for at least 12 when found, using the cords from the drapes. Seems really strange when there were probably so many other ways at his disposal (presumably). Seems like drugs were a major part of his life, so…

One of my best friends took her life a few years ago and it was devestating. Only in her 40’s and someone you would never expect to ever consider suicide. No indication of any problems in her life. Left no note so we still struggle with “why”.

I meant to say 12 hours in my previous post. GAgirl, I have had a similar experience with a close family member. Even when there is a note, you still have the feelings that surely you could have done something.

I agree harriett. I still have those feelings.

I’m not trying to change the subject, I just think that suicide is dumb. So, feel free to ignore me.

Don’t mess with the J. Hud!

I voted to give Paula the boot. Kara isn’t much better, but I have to hold out hope that she will rip open her dress at least once a season. I feel bad for Ruben, he is a great guy.

JT, suicide is a very depressing subject, so thanks for the change of focus.

With all her flaws, I still prefer Paula to Kara. I voted to leave things the way they used to be.

i’d rather have kara than randy — he’s gotten rather, well, unnecessary lately to me — no real criticism that the contestant can bite on to improve — i mean “dawg that was pitchy” “that was the bomb” “that just didn’t do it for me, dude” helllooooooo

Chances are they’ll keep Kara around for one more year, then keep her on once Simon leaves.

I agree with Linny, Randy’s gotten pretty much irrelevant. He’s not “dope” enough for me!

LOL Rickster, I can’t imagine AI without Simon. Seriously! Some other show maybe take it’s place, yeah, but AI with Ryan and Paula and all … without Simon it would just be a farce. As much as I dislike his way of saying things sometimes, at least he’s generally being “real” and honest, and not just blathering. that is when he bothers to give criticism and stop “pawing paula” (could we call what simon does “pauling”???)

True, Linny. But he’s on record (in a recent People Magazine) saying he’s leaving no later than after Season 10. He’s got so many other things going (like Britain’s Got Talent) that provide a much better return on the investment of his time. The dude made $170 Million last year!

I tend to agree with Simon’s assessments much more than the other judges. Randy’s too “lingo-istic” (”Dope” “Dawg” “Pitchy” – Kara focuses on “Artistry” and “making it your own” – Paula’s too incomprehensible. My favorite Simon assessment was his “What the H#$$ was that” after Adam’s “Ring of Fire.”

Hey bloggers – which judge’s judgment most often matches yours? Count me in with Simon.

Rickster, that would be a perfect poll for some future blog! Rodney… hint hint.

Simon matches my opinion around 75% of the time which is far better then anybody else. This last year he was more off or I was, he liked some stuff that I didn’t and was more harsh on things that I loved. The others are either pimp too much or put on the kid gloves when they should give a simple honest criticism.

I’m with you JT, Rick — Simon and I agree more than I do with anyone else; if Kara would lose the “artistry” routine (and I’ve commented on THIS aspect of her presence before) she would actually be a good judge insofar as critiqueing the contestants with an eye towards constructive criticism that they can bank on… when she climbs out of her highbrow attitude, she’s not half bad! but i agree, that would be a good poll — and i think that we will be a tad surprised to learn that Simon is the one most matched — albeit in different ways, i.e., he likes 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9, i like 1 and 5, jt likes 3 and 9 and 7, Rick likes 1 7 and 5 and so on, so that while Rick or JT and I may not agree, we find more agreement with Simon that anyone….

clear as mud, right?

Linny I never said that I liked 3! I’m ok with 9 and I do like 7, but don’t go telling people that I like 3.

While we are at it, what do you have against even numbers? How about putting an even number in that list, I like even numbers! In fact aside from 7, 21, 69, and 89 all the other numbers that I like are even. Linny, don’t bring your anti-even numberism to this blog we just won’t tolerate that.
