5/27: Did AT&T influence the “Idol” vote? NYT writes about it

AT&T provided free text messaging services at two Kris Allen parties in Arkansas but provided none for runner up Adam Lambert, according to the New York Times.

Was the votes from those two parties enough to make a difference? I doubt it. Since “Idol” did not provide a vote total, I suspect it wasn’t even close.

But unless those vote totals are ever revealed, Lambert fans will remain irate and understandably so.

A skeptical MJ notes that AT&T has been doing this for years.

-Release date for Jordin Spark’s second album “Battlefield” is July 21.

People have been mass texting for years, I doubt that these two parties provided many additional votes.

Adam fans will just have to be content with the fact that after a whole week from the end of the season I’ve already forgotten the name of the guy who won. Oh wait, you included his name in the blog entry… Kris.

“Battlefield” huh?

Yeah, I kind of have to chuckle at Jordin having an album called “Battlefield” — because chick singing something about battlefield just jumps my brain right to Pat Benetar, who is without a doubt as far removed from Jordin Sparks as possible, style and genre-wise. at least IMHO.

Of course the results were rigged. Adam is already outselling the other guy and has been all season. His album of the season debuted at 33 compared to 50. He has the #1 best selling video and 18 of the top 40 video sales. He is smoking the other guy on the charts. The K K K Kristian “hate voters” should put their money where their supposed votes were. That is if they haven’t lost their jobs in Pig Chase Arkansas.

LOL! This is getting out of hand. I heard that AT&T also shut down all of their cell phone towers in the LA and San Fran area so Adams fans couldnt text in votes. Just Kidding! I wish AI would publish the vote totals so this crap could just go away. I bet Kris feels like the Vietnam vets that were spit on when returning to the US. UNREAL!

Adam outselling Kris is not evidence that the vote was rigged. Instead it is evidence that those fans that bought and liked Adam’s music didn’t vote as much as those that bought and liked the offerings of Kris.

Here’s a link to an interesting article about former idol contestants. We can learn a lot about their personalities (and why we pick them) from their body language. Taylor Hicks, for example, had a tendency to assume a protective posture, including crossed legs and intertwined fingers, while Ryan Seacrest named the Top 12 suggesting a sort of insecurity.

Thanks, D., for the link – haven’t been able to check my R&K recording yet so this was a great afternoon treat. Wonder if Kelly used Regis as a buffer, fearing she wouldn’t be able to control herself if she sat right NEXT to the Idol? Regis, who kept referring to the guest as Lampert, isn’t very smart, is he? Turning down an opportunity to swap ties? An Adam tie at a charity auction ought to bring in big bucks.

For AT&T to make free texting available to any voters represents an unfair advantage, even though Kris’s win is probably more attributable to the crypto-Christian rightwingers who were terrified that someone who might be gay could win.
That said, they are both talented singers and nice people. In the end, the American people — ALL the people — will judge with their debit cards.

AT&T has been holding voting parties for a number of years. Elliot Yamin had a huge A t &T voting party where free phones were given out for power texting and he ended up 3rd.

Adam, as y’all would know if you took a deep breath and calmed down, is way better off where he is right now…with a huge number of fans determined to prove that he’s the best. So put your money where your mouths are and buy his music.

Deirdre, i really have to laugh at how gullible some people are — everything is a conspiracy, they’re all against (me)(him)(her)(whatever) and it’s sooooo unfaaaaair. [want some cheese with that whine?] …

People, in the first place, American Idol, like everything ELSE on television, is a commercial venture. AT&T (formerly cingular) is and has always been a big sponsor of AI. As has Coke. As has Ford. Gee. think that maybe perhaps any way that they can promote their product, they’re GONNA use gladly?

And Deirdre is soooo right. (and i love the term Glambert, by the way — hadn’t seen that one before!) Adam’s well-off in his position at second — like Clay, he will make a career for himself before the actual winner gets off the ground. Heck. Adam alREADY has a career! He can pretty much name his price, and he’s got the background and experience to know what to look out for…

Mercedes S.

Linny, the scandal has taken off – it’s gone beyond the NYT and is now all over the news. AT&T admits “Overeager Employees Helped Idol Fans Text for Kris”.

The employees have now had a talking to and “in the future, the company will ensure employees understand that its sponsorship celebrates the competition, not individual contestants.”

In a separate statement, Fox and AI’s producers “are certain the (voting) results are ‘fair, accurate and verified’ and that the integrity of the voting process was protected against unfair influence.”

Note, they are “certain”, they don’t “know”. If they knew for sure, maybe we could be trusted with the voting results…

Since AT&T is a major sponsor of Idol, their involvement would constitute a violation of federal law. If we still had newspapers like in the olden days, when there was something called investigative journalism, maybe someone would get to the bottom of this.

So we’ll just continue with the conspiracy theories. And life does, indeed, go on.

OhMyGod, AT&T may have influenced some voting results. for american idol. which voting procedure is crazy and “unfair” (insofar as being a true representation of popularity) in the first place. wow. such a travesty. such a BFD!!!!!

Was Kris the best or simply the anti-adam? I am sure this will be debated for some time. They should have saved all this until next season to boost ratings. Carrie, Kelly or maybe the dark horse Taylor.

Ace of Hearts: let me once again dispel this myth that large numbers of votes were cast against Adam, because they weren’t. The rabid fans of Kris felt that he would lose, so they voted like crazy knowing that each and every vote was needed to save him. However, the rabid fans of Adam felt that he would win, so they voted a little and then watched re-runs of Laverne and Shriley.

Yes it’s really that simple. A few AT&T reps didn’t cost Adam the title.

Deirdre

May 27th, 2009

If this post shows up twice(at least the gist of it) It’s not my fault…blame Pacman.

Here’s how it works. Idol Does NOT count the votes! The show hires an independent firm to count the votes. This firm is regulated by the FCC. The FCC has so many regulations that, if the show cheated on the vote count, it would owe the gov’t enough money to bail out 4 car companies and 3 banks plus the producer’s first born child.

How do I know this? Because my son had to buy a whole bunch of communications law books that cost so much money I suspected there was gold inside.

Unfortunately…no gold…just tons and tons of gov’t gobble-de-gook that basically said shows can’t cheat or the money train runs dry.

ACE OF HEARTS

JTelsa, Do you think that is the same thing that happened with Daughtry? His base felt he was safe? I don’t think we can completely discount the fact that there was an anti adam faction. Whether it was because of what they thought of his lifestyle or they felt he was being pimped by the judges. Kris may have rode a latter day soul patrol to victory. I look forward to the music they both will make in years to come.

JTesla

May 27th, 2009
6:36 pm

Ace of Hearts, I do think it is similar to what happened to Daughtry. There was some Adam dislike, but that dislike was there from the beginning. People didn’t vote for Adam week after week only to get to the finale and come to the conclusion that they didn’t want someone of his “lifestyle” to win. There were also some other minor factors: the pro Adam media blitz also did a little to help Kris, home town and home state support also helped Kris.

There were many factors that contributed to Kris winning, of all the many issues I do not feel that the anti vote was that significant. AI has always been about voting for your favorite not about voting someone off the island.

Many people, for instance young teen girls, might claim to have a hatred of Adam, but I believe that hatred stems from the fact that Adam was competing against a person that they loved – Kris. Last year David Cook was hated by the teen girl crowd that had flocked to their eternal love Archie. Did they hate Cook or did they just love that cute little Archuleta sooo much? I say they first voted for and decided to be anti second.

Deirdre

I think that Adam and Kris are such different performers that the vote wasn’t so much against Adam as it was toward Kris. America likes middle of the road…it’s safe…and there’s not a whole heck of a lot that feels “safe” about Adam. That kid throws it all on the stage and says “take it or leave it”. Kris is mellow and easy and nice and soft. Adam is all hard edges; he’s challenging. Kris is familiar.

Both are really talented. We should feel privileged to have had such a fine offering this season.

Come on all you nutjobs…give me another conspiracy theory! I need a fix. To prove I’m so over this, I was going to end my day by posting something nice, like, “‘Up’ is a wonderful movie, go see it!”… and then I checked out CNN’s site one last time.

From being “certain” that the results of the competition (A.I) are fair, accurate and verified, Fox and “AI” are now “absolutely certain” of this.

At&T is also clarifying its position: “In Arkansas, a few local AT&T employees were invited to attend 2 local parties organized by the community. Caught up in the enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant, they brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.

“Since the final count is a secret, there is no way to know if text-message votes cast at the two parties in Allen’s homestate made a difference in the outcome.”

How many local AT&T employees were at that party? With how many demo phones? And how many people were interested in learning how to text- vote for their homey?

I just learned about power texting – that means 10 texts in one send.
Two power texts per minute = that’s 20 texts per minute; 1,200 texts per hour and 4,800 texts for the four hours.

So if 100 people do this , that 480,000 “votes”. Suddenly, it’s not so incredible that 43 million Kris votes came out of Arkansas, a state with barely 3 million people.

JTesla

May 28th, 2009
1:52 am

Mercedes you’ve slipped over to the crazy side. Please prove that the AT&T reps taught people how to “power text,” list the number of people who attended those parties, the number who used demo phones to vote, or how many votes were cast from any of these parties. Why do I ask you to prove it? Because you are the one backing the wacky conspiracy theory that is why. The proof is on your shoulders. Power texting has been taking place for years supporting all contestants. Nothing new to discover.

Also, do you really need me to provide you with a definition of “certain?” Because your inability to understand what certain means is starting to make your posts look like silly fangirl ravings.

Take a deep breath, in with the good air, out with the bad. Adam lost get on with your life.

By the way: where is the official word regarding the number of votes that came from Arkansas? It was incorrectly stated that 38 million came from Arkansas (now somehow 43 million), but AT&T has stated since that they “can’t confirm how many votes were cast in Arkansas.”

The myth is spiraling out of control, next thing you know 90 million power texting votes will have come from Arkansas. All taught by a four AT&T reps. Ignore that people could have learned it off the KrisAllenNation website! Yes, the web site taught power texting too, oh the humanity! School’s out!!!

Speaking of Sarah Jane(Gerald Ford’s would-be assassin) didn’t she look just like everybody’s ideal grandma? And her comment that she actually believed(at the time) that killing Ford would set off a violent revolution….wasn’t she there when JFK was assassinated…where was the violent revolution then?

Adam sings to his boyfriend…

“Im in you, you’re in me
Im in you, you’re in me
Cause ya gave me the love
Love that I never had…”

Oh goody!

This is just funny:

An analyst at the Connecticut Police Academy says a co-worker responded literally to her “bite me” remark and chomped on her. Former Waterbury police Capt. Francis Woodruff was charged Tuesday with disorderly conduct and released on a promise to appear in court. He’s accused of biting academy license and applications analyst Rochelle Wyler on April 24.

A police arrest report says Wyler had teeth marks and bruising on the back of her left arm.

Wyler’s complaint alleges Woodruff was annoying her by calling her a clerk. She says she responded with “bite me” — and he did.

Mercedes rambles: Yes, that was so cute, the girl and older gent singing along – Sarah Jane Moore, would-be-assassin of Gerald Ford, seemed rather non-plused though, standing there in the front row, as if thinking, who the hell are those people and why are people so nuts about them?

This just goes right over my head, but I am sincerely praying that it’s code for yet another juicy conspiracy theory. Someone, please, help Neg decipher the meaning.

And, who’s the top-seller? Adam or Kris? Well, to be fair, both of them.

American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen sold more downloads this past week than runner-up Adam Lambert did, but far fewer than David Cook did in the week after he was announced as the Season 7 winner. Allen’s 11 entries on the Hot Digital Songs chart sold a combined total of 479,000 downloads. Lambert’s 15 entries on that chart sold a combined total of 390,000. But both tallies are dwarfed by Cook, whose 17 chart entries sold a combined 943,000 downloads in his post-victory week last year. (One reason for the discrepancy: There are other purchasing options this year, including the iTunes Pass and digital albums.)

The order of finish was reversed on The Billboard 200 album chart, where Lambert’s Season 8 Favorite Performances debuts at #33, while Allen’s edition of the digital-only title arrives at #50. As every Idol watcher knows, the contestants’ weekly performances are immediately available for download on iTunes. But the show shields download information until a winner is announced, to avoid revealing the building popularity of the key contestants. As of this week’s charts, the Idol contestants’ hits and misses are out in the open, the same as any other artist.

She didn’t like being called a clerk? She deserved it!

It’s great being on the front page, more exposure for Rodney. Milk thisstory Rodney, it may annoy me, but it is what the people want.

Neg…the Today show had Gerald Ford’s would-be assassin, Sarah Jane Moore on today now that she’s been released on probation. She was in the crowd watching Adam and Kris sing.

I mentioned the “girl and the older gentleman” singing along with Adam as an interesting look at the appeal of Idol contestants.

Last time I looked, we’re not on the front page…we just have an extra-special detractor today.

Thanks for support, Deirdre! People upthread who took umbrage, I just want you to think for yourself and question press releases from powerful institutions. Neither AT&T nor Fox would answer direct questions from the media about Textgate.

On a cheerier note, Danny Gokey was on the Regis and Kelly show, and apart from his leitmotif being “Dream on” (the studio recording, which is quite palatable), he did very well, expecially when you consider it was his first talk show appearance ever.

He seems jinxed, though. His luggage was lost, and he said he really missed his Redken products.
