5/25: How did we do in the Idol polls?

Happy Memorial Day!

I had long complained that the previous software we used to blog lacked the ability for me to poll the readers. This year, I finally got my chance. I ended up doing almost 80 polls. I went over them to see how well we did in terms of our collective predictive powers.

Sorry to say but “Idol” confounded us nearly half the time including picking the winner albeit it was really really close in the end.

Here are some notable results:

– Two-thirds of you before even seeing Kara thought she was a good idea. By the end of the season, 56% of you thought she was a waste of time or simply okay. I give it a 50/50 shot she’ll be back next year.

-On Feb. 22, I asked what you thought of Danny Gokey. 68% liked him a lot. The rest thought he was being overly pimped by the show producers. All true.

On Feb. 25, I asked who that week of the semifinals should make it to the top 12 and you correctly picked Allison and Adam. Jasmine, Matt and Megan got very little support.

On March 4, I asked about that group of 12. Top pick was Lil Rounds followed by Ju’Not Joyner (who should have been in the final 13 over Michael Sarver). Scott MacIntyre came in third followed by Felicia Barton (who should have been picked over Jasmine)

On the same day, I asked who among the top 8 will make it to the top 12 (which became 13). In order, you picked Anoop, Megan, Jasmine and Matt. Bingo! You got it right!

On March 6, after the top 13 was announced, I asked who you think will win. In order, you picked 1. Danny, 36% 2. Adam 22% 3. Lil 4. (tie) 12% Allison 6% 4. (tie) Anoop 6% 6. 8. Kris 4 7. Megan 3% 7. (tie) Matt 3% % 9. Alexis 2% 10- Scott 2% 11-Jasmine 2% 12- Michael Sarver 1% 13- Jorge 1% Overall, we weren’t that far off the mark – except for Kris Allen. He was way down in the middle of the pack at that point behind Anoop, Lil and Allison and not much ahead of Alexis and Matt.

I also asked the same day who SHOULD win. Out of 489 votes, 32% said Danny Gokey. Only 15% picked Adam. 2% said Kris Allen at that stage. Lil Rounds was only four votes behind Adam and came in third with 15%. Anoop was fourth with 9%, Fifth was Allison at 8%. Sixth was Matt at 6%. Alexis and Megan were tied for 7th at 4% each. So Kris was ninth at 2%, just ahead of Scott at 10th. Jasmine, Michael and Jorge all had 1% or less support. One person actually said Michael Sarver should win. Probably his mom!

On March 10, we asked who should go home. You predicted Jasmine and Jorge! Bingo. 100% correct. Two for two.

But on March 17, during top 11 week, we got it all wrong. We predicted collectively that it would be Michael Sarver for sure, followed by Scott, Megan and (yes that “Ring of Fire” peeved people) Adam Lambert. Only 8% of the voters thought Alexis Grace would go home. Those 8% were right. So two for three.

On March 25, for top 10 week, 48% picked Michael Sarver to go home and this time, the group got it right. 36% picked Megan. That’s three for four.

On March 31, for top 9 week, 67% picked Megan. Bingo! The group is now four for five.

On April 7, for top 8 week, 51% chose Scott to go home and again, collective wisdom was right. We were now 5 out of 6. (33% picked Lil Rounds)

On April 14, for top 7 week, 52% picked Lil Rounds over Matt at 30%. Wrong! Matt got booted–then saved. Two thirds thought that was wrong. We are down to 5 out of 7.

On April 21, for top 6-7 week, both Anoop and Lil Rounds got cut. We got this one only 50% right. 46% picked Lil Rounds. (We got to pick two). That was correct. But 30% picked Matt vs. 17% for Anoop. So right now, we are 6 out of 9.

On April 28, for top 5 week, we chose Matt Giraud in a landslide 77% to leave. And we got it right. So at this point, we’re 7 for 10.

On May 5, on top 4 rock night, we missed the mark big time. A whopping 61% pegged Kris to go home, but Allison (at just 15%) did instead. Our predictive powers have dropped to 7 out of 11.

On May 12, for top 3 week, we again got it wrong. We picked Kris AGAIN (46%) and he confounded us. Danny (at 33%) went home instead. So we dropped to just 7 out of 12.

Then came the finale. Although 51% of you said Kris SHOULD win, 51% predicted an Adam victory. So in the end, we were 7 out of 13.

-And here’s hopefully the last time we ever hear from Bikini Girl.

Ever. Naturally, she badmouths Kara.

-Queen’s Brian May is so impressed with Adam Lambert, he wouldn’t mind Lambert being the frontman. But I doubt Adam would take it any time soon for obvious reasons.

-The final ratings for “Idol” last Wednesday was 28.8 million and a 10.0 rating and 30 share among 18 to 49 year olds for the finale. But that’s the lowest 18-49 number ever for an “Idol” finale.

-Yawn. Clay Aiken apologizes for critiquing Adam Lambert’s “Ring of Fire.” This is definitely much ado about who cares.

Rodney, you like numbers don’t you? It’s very interesting thanks for putting it together. It’s nice to see that all but 4% can be surprised by the final outcome.

Bikini girl: never have I been so repulsed by a woman. She actually disgusts me. Maybe if she worked on her honesty a bit she wouldn’t be such a bitter person.

Good morning,

I clicked on the link to read Clay’s (insincere) apology. Why was Carlos Santana’s picture beside the apology. Did he also aplogize? A couple of questions to the Claymates: what actually is Clay doing career-wise that has to do with singing? Why is he really not welcome on the AI site. Kelly dropped 19 Entertainment, but she appeared on the show this season? Can Clay still perform on the AI stage? Is it just coincidence that Clay claims to have only heard one Adam performance? The only performance he got ragged on, no way. Sour grapes for sure, He has lost his spot as favorite gay idol. Can I say that?

When doing a favorite of a particular spot or season, has the running up of the current season ever not one the #1 spot? I thought for sure Bo Bice would win favorite runner up. He was my vote and my pick for that season.

Happy Memorial Day and good morning, Atlanta!

Rodney, loved all the stats. We’re not perfect prognosticators and that contributes to the fascination of this blog. The mindless entertainment that “reality TV” offers is so addictive.

Neg, if France is good enough for Johnny Depp and you, I guess I’ll be calling a moving company tomorrow.

Just watched Constantine on the Today show with the cast of Rock of Ages.

I always liked Constantine’s voice and have wondered how far he would have gone on Idol if he hadn’t been making all the faces. His performance on the Today Show hasn’t changed my mind. It’s very gratifying to know that he has a Tony nomination as best actor in a musical. While he may not be pop rock material, I think Broadway was always what he had in mind.

He was asked about Idol..said he thought both Kris and Adam were terrific. Also said he never misses the show; he records it while he’s working and watches it.

It turns out that he is a better representative of American Idol than some of the other “I never watch the show” contestants.

Hi everyone, hope you are having a good long weekend. Referring to Nana’s post on a previous thread, remember the reason for the holiday – to honor the men and women in the military who have paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy our freedom in the USA.

The second part of Larry King w/the idols is tonight, looking forward to that too. Danny did sound like “sour grapes” in Friday’s show, seemed like he was hating on Adam to me. Speaking of which, Clay Aiken should change his name to Has Been, what a twit.

JTesla, I’m with you on Bikini Girl maybe not so vehemently though. She’s definitely got the skank factor wrapped up, especially with the new boobies. Not to diss plastic surgery if that’s your thing, but that’s ALL she’s about – no personality or talent to go with the package. So she looks hot in a bikini, a lot of other girls do too and when gravity takes it’s toll…she’ll still be a snotty little twit. But the look on her face during Kara’s singing WAS pretty funny….

Enjoyed the stats, Rodney, thanks. The New York Times, which can’t stop writing abt AI (two big stories yesterday, one of them Frank Rich’s political column – he sees Adam as a cultural watershed), has another numbers story in today’s paper:

The Idol audience is getting older; according to Nielsen Media Research, in 2004 viewers 6 to 24 made up 24% of the AI audience, while viewers over 55 accounted for 18 percent. “But”, says the Times, ” this year those numbers had flipped: the 6-to-24 category measured only 17 percent of the total audience, while the over-55 contingent was 27 percent of the total.

“Fox noted that although the Nielsen ratings for the finale were the lowest in the show’s eight years among 18-to-49-year-olds, the total number of viewers for the finale – 28.8 million – was the same as the third season finale, when Ms. Barrino outdueled Diana DeGarmo”.

I don’t see how Nielsen can measure ratings anymore, since we don’t watch television the way we used to. I record all my favorite shows and watch them at my convenience – I save time, miss the commercials, and can fast-forward the chase scenes and torture ordeals on “24″.

After rehashing all the conspiracy theories against Adam Lambert, the NYT came to the conclusion that what favored Kris Allen, AI’s very own Mine That Bird, was that he’s from the South.

“Consider the eight winners of ‘American Idol’ and their home states: Kelly Clarkson, Texas; Ruben Studdard, Alabama; Fantasia Barrino, North Carolina; Carrie Underwood, Oklahome; Taylor Hicks, Alabama; Jordin Sparks, Arizona; David Cook, Missouri; Kris Allen, Arkansas.”

BTW, it was an urban tale that Arkansas, a state with a population of less than 3 million, voted 38 million times for Adam.

Sorry, but I didnt care for the cast performance on the Today Show at all, different strokes for different folks. The cast definitely has a lot of hair. Constantine fits right in. His show did receive 5 tony nominations but several others got so many more. The highest i believe was 15.

Constantine sang twice on The Today Show. Once with the whole cast and a duet which was excellent.

So did Constantine eye the camera in a way that made all the women swoon? Good old Constantine.

Deirdre

Yes, he did it once, JT, but mostly because one of the other cast members started making the face.

Mercedes, they even mentioned the guyliner on the Today Show…mostly because they kept asking him about American Idol. He plays an 80’s rocker in the show so the guyliner is fitting.

harriett

And a Happy Belated Birthday to Mike!!!! I enjoyed the Terminator movie, too, Mike!

Here’s the end of a really good piece written by mj to sum up the finale. I urge everyone to read the whole piece:

One last note: A huge kudos to Adam and Kris for creating the awesomest bromance evah. The Christian Midwest straight arrow and the Jewish Hollywood gay dude forged an on-air friendship that foiled at least some of the cultural war nonsense the media tried to drum up. Their message that respect and love CAN prevail, despite great differences moved me. Beyond reason.

Good morning my blogians!
Why are we extended the bikini girl’s 15 minutes? It is way beyond over!
I watched Ellen from last week while on the treadmill this morning and she made a call to Adam. I think it is kinda strange that she gets to have all the contestants voted off on her show, including the winner – but not the runner up? That just seems wrong! They did talk about the guyliner and how so many guys are gonna show at the auditions next year thinking that is the only thing they need.

Happy Girthday Mike!!!

I’ll try to keep a long story short.

Stray dog shows up at my house last Tuesday night ,right when idol was coming on. We fed the dirty and hungry dog. We looked for her owner with no sucess, I took the dog to the vet Thursday and had her checked out, she had no id. chip implanted. The last thing I need is another dog! Well, now I am the owner of a rare, pure-bred Silver Sable German Sheperd that is very good-natured and absolutely GORGEOUS. The dog was either dumped in the woods here or she escaped from her previous owner. She still has rope imprints in her fur from where she was tied up. She is still getting accustomed to being here and is very needy at present. She has kept me very busy!!

I had to also bring my mother and her new knee home from the hospital and I started building an ark.

If I’ve missed anything important while trying to catch up with the blog, then please inform me!

Saw the vid of Kris on Regis and Kelly, and a couple things really stood out. First, Regis asked Kris if he was congratulated by Simon, and the answer was no. In fact, Simon apparently just stormed out in a huff refusing to even give perfunctory props to Kris for winning Idol. What a total crybaby prick. Go back to the Pond, loser.

Second, Kris performed No Boundaries acoustically, and… gulp…. the song actually sounded great. When he picks up that six string he’s gold.

Neg, I could have sworn I saw Simon reach up and shake Kris’ hand at the end of the program, but if you are right, then I am wrong! I am going to go back and look at the end again. But we all saw Simon pouting, didn’t we? I will have to look up Kris’ performance on the show today. I think he and Adam both are due to be on Today this week. Maybe it’s Thursday? Can’t remember.

Mercedes S.

May 26th, 2009
2:39 pm

WTF – my long, serious post on Kris’n'Regis’n'Kelly came out as “Enter your comments here”???

Well, you already know abt Simon storming off in a huff – the actual conversation went like this – after Kris had been given three mins for his “No Boundaries”, which he mostly played with his eyes closed, as if ashamed to meet the looks of the studio audience while performing:

Regis: “After you won, did Simon come up and congratulate you?”
Kris: “Actually I haven’t talked (could be “didn’t talk; K. mumbles)to Simon at all.”

Regis also established that he and Kara are cousins.

Harriett – you were put off by Scott. What about Sarver – each time he said something, Adam looked despondent. Gives credence to the rumor about Sarver’s gay bashing. Sad – these guys all have to get along on that tour.

harriett

May 26th, 2009

I had not heard about Sarver’s gay bashing. Where did that come from? I guess I missed Adam’s look, since I was not aware.

Scott just acted like it was all about him.

Mercedes S.

May 26th, 2009

Harriett, I hesitate to post this ugly thing about Sarver, because I want to be accurate with quotes and who made them and when and where, and now I can’t find it. It was all over TWOP, on Adam’s thread, but he now has 706 pages, and I have to go and see “Drag Me To Hell” in a few minutes (as you see I do have a life outside this Idol Blogging), so time just isn’t there.

In short, Mike Sarver seems to have made the unfortunate comment “Where I’m from, you’re either in the closet or you’re dead”. I think he’s from Jasper, Texas. Anyone else heard about this?
