5/29: Will Adam Lambert finally come out? And Adam bites back against Clay

Yesterday, Adam Lambert told the Z100 morning show in New York: “If you stay tuned, we’ll have all the answers you’re looking for. Very very very soon, everybody is going to find out what they need to find out.”

Ryan Seacrest tweeted: “What up adam and kris! crushing it on the today show! Btw adam will address the sexuality speculation soon.”

MJ noted: There’s a rumor going around that Adam’s got a cover story in the next issue of Rolling Stone magazine. The speculation is he’ll “come out” via the article.

-Adam also bit back against Clay Aiken in an Access Hollywood interview for his comments against Adam last week.

“I don’t know Clay … I’m glad he’s getting headlines now though, because he wasn’t before.” Lambert added, “If he wants to ride my coattails about it, good for him.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, American Idol second runner-up Danny Gokey has expressed interest in competing on Dancing With the Stars.

Interestingly, not a single “American Idol” alum has landed on “Dancing With the Stars.” At least, not yet. “Idols” have popped up on shows such as “Celebrity Rehab” (good going, Nikki McKibbin and Jessica Sierra!), “Gone Country” (Justin Guarini and Diana DeGarmo, to name two) and “Fear Factor” (Anthony Fedorov and Carmen Rasmussen). But DWTS and “Idol,” which are shot in neighboring studios, have not cross-pollinated yet. Hmmm… this is a good idea for a poll, eh?

5/27: Did AT&T influence the “Idol” vote? NYT writes about it

AT&T provided free text messaging services at two Kris Allen parties in Arkansas but provided none for runner up Adam Lambert, according to the New York Times.

Was the votes from those two parties enough to make a difference? I doubt it. Since “Idol” did not provide a vote total, I suspect it wasn’t even close.

But unless those vote totals are ever revealed, Lambert fans will remain irate and understandably so.

A skeptical MJ notes that AT&T has been doing this for years.

-Release date for Jordin Spark’s second album “Battlefield” is July 21.

5/26: Idol “withdrawal”

As a daily blogger of “American Idol” for more than four years, I guess I’ve never really experienced true “Idol” withdrawal and I help you regular off season folks to ease their way out of each season and into the next.

But alas, not everyone has that outlet:

The New York Daily News talks to a psychologist about it:

“I hear it all the time from my patients: ‘how am I supposed to get through the summer without my favorite TV show?’” says Dr. Michael Silverman, assistant professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “It’s potentially a withdrawal. Not like cocaine, but neurologically it is along the same lines.”

Idol blog= cocaine! :)

-Here’s an update on that nutty Diana DeGarmo stalker in Australia. Tanya Quattrocchi will be sentenced Thursday for multiple charges of stalking.

-I just spoke with Michael Johns. I’ll post the interview closer to the release of his album on June 23. He is committed to moving back to Atlanta once his career settles down. Right now, …

5/25: How did we do in the Idol polls?

Happy Memorial Day!

I had long complained that the previous software we used to blog lacked the ability for me to poll the readers. This year, I finally got my chance. I ended up doing almost 80 polls. I went over them to see how well we did in terms of our collective predictive powers.

Sorry to say but “Idol” confounded us nearly half the time including picking the winner albeit it was really really close in the end.

Here are some notable results:

– Two-thirds of you before even seeing Kara thought she was a good idea. By the end of the season, 56% of you thought she was a waste of time or simply okay. I give it a 50/50 shot she’ll be back next year.

-On Feb. 22, I asked what you thought of Danny Gokey. 68% liked him a lot. The rest thought he was being overly pimped by the show producers. All true.

On Feb. 25, I asked who that week of the semifinals should make it to the top 12 and you correctly picked Allison and Adam. Jasmine, Matt and Megan got very little support.

On …

On the mass phone press conference for the media that isn’t big enough to get a one on one, Kris sounded humble and exhausted while Adam sounded analytical and not remotely disappointed he lost.

I got in queue to ask Adam a question since he came first but I wasn’t able to get on with Kris.

I decided to try to dance around the “is he gay” deal by asking him,

“Do you think all this talk about your sexual orientation may have affected the voting?”

His brief answer: “You know, probably.” Uncomfortable silence. If he’s going to out himself, he wasn’t going to do it… yet.

Oddly, he answered virtually the same question differently on “Larry King Live” Friday …

5/22: Atlanta to be an audition city for season 9

-The Seattle Times reports the cities, but not the dates, for season 9 auditions:

Denver, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Orlando.

A spokeswoman at Idol confirmed with me at 12:20 p.m. that Atlanta will be one of the cities.

This will be the fifth time in nine seasons that Atlanta is an audition site. Atlanta had auditions seasons one through three and season seven.

I will provide more information as I get it. Interesting that they chose mostly big cities this time. In recent years, they’ve opted for some smaller towns, often near where the winners were based. You’d think they’d try Little Rock, Ark., for instance.

-
MJ did a good job collecting some leftover finale news. Simon Cowell naturally was not happy seeing Kris Allen win. And Clay Aiken dissed Adam Lambert on his Web site despite the fact he only saw Adam’s “Ring of Fire.” Bitter, party of one?

The reason Scott MacIntyre got virtually no solo time is because his partner Billy Joel bagged on him at …

5/20: American Idol recap – finale results. Who won? Kris Allen or Adam Lambert?

Kris Allen beat out Adam Lambert. The underdog, as Ryan Seacrest noted.

“Adam deserves this,” Kris Allen said. “I don’t even know how to feel!”

He sings “No Boundaries” much better the second time around thanks to starting at a lower key. But somehow, the emotional crescendo was lacking from past years, perhaps because he seemed more dumbfounded than joyously happy. Simon didn’t even look all that thrilled. At least Adam appeared to take it all gracefully.

Did America get it right with Kris?

  • Yes! Kris was the dark horse who became the thoroughbred!
  • No! Adam was Mr. Talent. He should have taken it home.

The readers of this blog, according to the polls yesterday, favored Kris but just barely. And they actually thought, 51 to 49 that Adam would win. Based on the early results of tonight’s poll, the split continues though I suspect the bitter Adam supporters are likely to be voting more often.

A reminder for newbies: this blog is year …

5/20: Mid-day report with ratings, Kyra Sedgwick’s fav and Ruben Studdard

What did you think of the coronation song “No Boundaries”?

  • It aptly captures the essence of what it’s like to compete on the show, especially that “hurricane” reference. Thank you Kara!
  • Bleh. Another turd to join the likes of “Inside Your Heaven” and “This is My Now”
  • At least it doesn’t reference “magic rainbows”!

-Ratings last night, based on early results, were okay: 23.8 million viewers. That will be adjusted later to around 24.3 million. That’s more than 10% down from a year ago at 27.1 million.

-Two more celebs on the show tonight: Rod Stewart and Lionel Richie.

-Dialidol showed that it’s still too close to call but the results are favorable to Kris Allen.

-I spoke with Kyra Sedgwick last week for her upcoming “Closer” season debut. She is a Kris Allen fan.

“I think he’s a great artist,” Sedgwick said. “I love his interpretation of songs. He’s always surprising us.”

-Simon Cowell’s ex gets attacked. Fortunately, she …
