4/30: Matt Giraud exit interview, ratings, Sanjaya promo for “I’m a Celebrity

Who is your favorite fifth place contestant of all time? (Season six had a double elimination so I'll say both finished fifth)

Matt Giraud was sweet and more engaging than I expected during his exit interview.

He kept his answers short enough that I even got to ask a follow up!

I asked: Did you even want to win “American Idol”?

“I never came on wanting to be the ‘American Idol.’ My dream was to play the piano on that stage and sing jazz and meet the mentors. Those dreams came true. If i win, there’s definitely a lot of perks. I’d like it and fight for it. But it wasn’t the goal. I’m not kicking myself for not winning. Obviously, we’ve seen past Idols finish fourth and fifth and do better than Idols. All hope is not lost.”

Was it annoying being compared to Justin Timberlake: A little bit. I respect him a lot. I really appreciated what he does. I knew people saw me as a white guy with soul. That’s how it works.. I think I’m a lot different. I like his type of music. I can pull it off. It’s not where I want to go musically. I’d rather be rocking out with some piano and a band like the Fray or Gavin DeGraw.

Camaraderie among the finalists: We liked to congregate in the kitchen and make fun of each othe a lot. Hardcore. They call me “Matt the Riffer” and make fun of Danny’s dance moves and Adam impersonates people. We really do like to spend time with each other and have long talks and vent about the show.

Georgia on His Mind: He plans to sing “Georgia on My Mind” during the “Idol” tour. Woohoo!

Being the first one “saved”: I can’t wait to see my name on a trivia card! I feel blessed, honored. Being saved, I never felt so much love before. It was a very cool feeling. It was one of the coolest feelings of my life. It made me feel special.

Did he expect to go home last night? I had complete peace with myself. I was ready for it. I was prepared what I was going to say and prepared mentally to deal with it.

His reax to Adam being in the bottom two: I was surprised Adam was down there with me. It was a crduel twist of fate to have him pick who he thought was the lowest vote getters. We played with him backstage. Why didn’t you pick us? It felt kind of uncomfortable.

What would he have done if he were placed in Adam’s situation? I would have pulled an Archuleta and sat on the floor!

On picking “My Funny Valentine:” I could have picked a bigger song and riffed all over the place. I just wanted to do something simple. I’m proud of what I did. I’m glad I went out on that note.

I asked: How did he feel that Simon loved him Tuesday and Randy & Kara did not? Kara’s usually on my side. You know it was a great way to go out. Going out with Simon calling me brilliant and comparing me to Nat King Cole. It’s better than him saying, ‘That’s the worst you’ve ever been. Have a good day.’

-Ratings on Tuesday were about 23.3 million, down 7 percent from a year ago. Wednesday night’s early numbers were 21.5 million and will end up around 21.8 million. That would be down 4 percent from a year ago. Last week, the results show was at 23.9 million, up from 23.2 million a year ago. That’s the seventh time this year Idol had a better ratings episode than the comparable one a year earlier. Overall, the show is still down 7 to 8 percent overall and 10 to 12 percent among younger viewers.

And here’s an interview with Sanjaya about doing the show “I’m a Celebrity… Get Met Outta Here!”

Nice interview with Matt. Didn’t watch the vid of Sanjaya.

Wrapping up my day at the office and heading home. Be safe, be happy and always keep a song in your heart, a smile on your face and a tap in your toes. Be careful when on the roads and highways.

OSF tomorrow. Hope we have some good music.

One other great choice for Adam: Neil Young, After the Gold Rush. Perfect pitch for his voice.

This is a hokey song, I know, but it would be perfect for Kris: Beth – the Kiss song.

Merlin Berlin – on the previous thread you brought up the non-issue that everyone and his brother has been trying to make into a scandal since Season One.

The producers have always been very up front about using the clips from the rehearsal for the ending montage on performance day. As the producers have pointed out many, many times, it would be technologically difficult and put undo pressure on the production team to have to take live performances that just ended and string them together into a usable montage. There is no scandal here. The clips have always been from the dress rehearsal. It’s public. It’s not hidden.

What’s next? Discovering the Atlantic Ocean? Inventing the pencil?

I also thought it was wrong for Adam to choose a group to cozy up to rather than refuse like Melinda and Archuletta did in the years before. Arrogant move, and I’m glad Matt and Kris busted him for it backstage.

Thanks for the interview Rodney. There have been a lot of turkeys that came in at #5.

Neg: I like your picks for Adam, but I wonder if those songs can get cleared.

Adam should do Living on a Prayer IMO. No one can sing that song, but I think he has the range to pull it off.

I found Adams move to be very refreshing. He comes across as being very humble, but his pick showed a bit of ego. That is a good thing, each and every contestant should be making song picks and performing as if they want to be in the top spot.

Deidre (from the last thread), I think Adam would be classified as an alto, not a tenor. (And maybe he wishes he were a soprano!) :-)

I agree with a previous post that Allison should stay away from Janis Joplin tunes to avoid a possible comparison/slagging by the judges.

Neg, some good selections though I think ‘Patience’ would be a bit of a stretch for Kris and I’d hate to hear Adam do any Zeppelin. (Sacrilegious!) :-) :-)

Highlander, Matt’s super high pitch is perfectly suited to Robert Plant’s voice. Anyway, Robert Plante was somewhat effeminate in his style, so it isn’t really such a stretch. Now, if Adam tried to pull off Skynyrd or the Allman Bros. we’d have to take him out to the woodshed.

Neg, just kidding. Though I wouldn’t really want to hear a Broadway version of any Zeppelin songs! Here are my humble choices for AI song selections:

Danny:
1. Turn The Page – Bob Seger
2. This Love – Maroon 5

Allison:
1. Bring Me Some Water – Melissa Etheridge
2. Thing Called Love – Bonnie Raitt

Kris:
1. Shattered (Turn The Car Around) – O.A.R.
2. Feels Like Tonight – Daughtry

Adam:
1. Kind Of Magic – Queen
2. Dream On – Aerosmith

And though I agree with you, Neg, on Bob Seger’s ‘Turn The Page’ for Danny, he may need to do something a bit more upbeat to keep from being foreshadowed by whatever over-the-top arrangement Adam comes out with.

I don’t think that Allison is a JOplin type anyway. She’s more Benetar, Jett type rocker. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Joplin fan from way back… and it would be interesting to hear what take Allison might have on a song of hers (ball and chain?)… but i hear, and see, allison more in the Rocker Chik kind of vein, Joplin was Psychadelic Rock… slight difference.

Rodney, thanks for reminding us of past season’s 5th place finishers…good poll. I voted for George Huff. He was a sweetheart and had a very different voice.

I didn’t remember Trenyce that much, but when “Ain’t Misbehavin” came to the Fox a couple of months ago, she was fantastic! That may just be her nitch. Of course Frenchie Davis & Ruben stole the show. I was with a group of 70 and on a whim decided to email Frenchie’s mgr to see if we could meet her afterwards. He arranged it and Frenchie called me on my cell 15 minutes after the show ended and we took lots of pictures with her and also some with Ruben. They were very gracious.

Neg, the Motel’s “Take the L Out of Lover” would also be a good choice. Or “You’re No Good” or “It’s a Heartache” if she could muster last week’s vulnerability and angst.

Like “feminine hygiene product in a flexible plastic container.”

Lyrics:

And the wheels go oom bala da da
Click clack click clack, oom bala da da
Oom ba la da da, every click clack
Brings me closer to you

Never know why I left you, baby
What ever did make me go
It’s a nonstop dream
That’s taking me back
But it’s traveling much too slow

(CHORUS)

For every mile of railroad track
I’m saying a little prayer
Hoping that you’ll be taking me back
Cause I only got a one way fare

(CHORUS)

Well, baby, I met a lot of gals
I even kissed a few
But I’d trade a train load
Full of those gals
For one sweet kiss from you
Lyrics courtesy Top40db.

(CHORUS)

Baby, I’ll kiss my blues goodbye
As soon as we kiss hello
And then I never want
To see a train again
Or hear a whistle blow

Or hear that oom bala da da
Click clack click clack, oom bala da da
Oom ba la da da, every click clack
Brings me closer to you

(CHORUS)

Oom bala da da
Click clack click clack, oom bala da da
oom bala da da
Click clack click clack, oom bala da da
Hit me with your best song, Todd
