4/27: Odds, airplay updates, top 4 theme?

On an exceedingly quiet day in ‘Idol’ land, here’s the latest bookmaker.com odds on who will win “Idol” continues to be dominated by Adam Lambert. Looks about right to me.

Adam Lambert -350 (same as wk earlier)
Danny Gokey +275 (up from +325 a wk earlier)
Kris Allen +1000 (up from +1400 a wk earlier)
Allison Iraheta +1800 (down from +1600 a wk earlier)
Matt Giraud +2000 (up from +4000 a wk earlier)

-Slash apparently leaked that he will be a guest judge, probably for top 4. Does that mean rock as a theme? I would hope so…

–”My Life Would Suck Without You” peaked at No. 3 (blame Lady Gaga and Flo-Rida, both of whom appeared on ‘Idol’) and is starting to slip. But Kelly Clarkson’s second single “I Do Not Hook Up” might be another top 10 hit. It’s already at No. 22 on the mediabase 24/7 top 40 chart.

Carrie Underwood’s single “I Told You So” is up to no. 4 on the country chart. Kellie Pickler’s “Best Days of Your Life” has been on the charts since December, nearly five months, and is only now about to hit the top 20. It’s at No. 21. The video and “Idol” appearance might have gotten listeners to take heed and give it some push up the radio charts.

David Cook’s second single “Come Back to Me” is struggling up the top 40 charts but hot AC (the more adult form of pop) is giving it some spins, with the song up to No. 22.

Jennifer Hudson’s “If This Isn’t Love” is no. 2 on urban AC and No. 27 on the urban chart.

And Chris Sligh’s co-written “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts slipped out of No. 1 (in favor of Macon’s own Jason Aldean.)

-And I forgot to mention this boring tidbit about Kara DioGuardi having an eating disorder in the past in an interview with “Extra.”

-And here’s a link to the video for David Archuleta’s latest single “A Little Too Not Over You,” the song he sang last week. Unlike “Crush,” top 40 radio is not hot on this song so far.

I would have to agree with them Nana. I do not see any way Adam loses short of him having a complete disaster of a week or something horribly damning coming out about him. I don’t see any of those happening – even his “ring of Fire” perfomance was not a disaster – wierd, and what the heck was that over the top, but his vocal control and ability still shone through.

From Rodney’s boring Kara link I found this:

The worst contestants ever, and look there is Jason Castro. I didn’t make the list, honest.

Hey! I haven’t had much time to blog lately. :-(

I think Adam will win too, I’ll just have to be content with my personal favorite Allison making the top 5 and I hope she makes it into the top 3 or 4. The odds are not in her favor!

If I were Adam, I’d be worried that so many have already crowned him the winner. That can be the kiss of death at times (just ask Chris Daughtry).

Regarding the time problems this season, all the fault can’t be put at the feet of the producers. The director is supposed to be in charge of the pacing of the show. And to that end, I don’t understand why Ryan and the judges don’t have direct earpiece contact with the control room so the director can tell them when it’s time to shut up and move on!

That would help keep Paula and Kara from rambling on, or Ryan for that matter.

I agree that, with assumptions abounding that Adam will win, and the previously discussed distribution of Lil’s and Anoop’s fans to the other contestants, Adam may find himself eliminated before his time.

IMO, Adam is the best singer on the show and Kris is the best musician. I would be ok with a Kris, Allison or Danny win over Adam if it comes to that, although I think Adam has out-sung the entire group right from the get-go.

Highlander, when I say “producers” it’s code for “The idiots running the show this year” because to be honest I wouldn’t know a producer from a director even if they wore color coded jackets. The boss, or the bosses boss needs to get something straightened out because this year is lying in taters on the control room floor.

I think Adam is about as safe as Chris Daughtry or David Cook, which for me means that there are too many variables. Will the eliminated contestant voters go to someone else, or will the buzz and the desire to say you voted for the winner take over? Too tough to call.

Personally I won’t be happy with Kris in the finals, because he bores me to no end. He may sound better than Matt, but I can’t tell them apart because they…

The discussion of Kris has already bored me, that is how boring I find the guy. All I can say is poor Allison. I don’t think she is one to gain votes from those that have been eliminated. She is my favorite, and the only one this season whose music I will purchase, but she has flirted with the bottom too many times.

And here’s the latest in the spoiler rumors. Can’t see this as real but it’s fun and travelling around the internet at the moment:

Directly from an anonymous member of Ricky Minors band here are some real spoilers which came in fresh this morning. Remember: these songs are the pics the Idols made before any dressed rehearsal but they are the real deal. Matt: ‘Fly me to the moon’ (originally Megan’s pick, but Matt insisted). Danny: ‘That’s Amore’ (his second pick is ‘i’ve got you under my skin’). Allison: ‘Can’t Take That Away From Me’. She already sung it during previous rehearsals and will probably do this one on stage. Adam ‘Leroy Brown’ or ‘That’s Life’. ‘That’s life’, was originally claimed by Kris (so don’t act all surprised if Kris comes out on stage with this one). Kris has chosen ‘Fever’ his second choice ‘That’s life’ might also be sung by Adam. And finally the group performance will show cast Allison in a leading role as the female voice in ‘Something Stupid’. Remember during rehearsals things might change.

And here’s something interesting:

NEW YORK — The Fox network is sticking with its regular schedule over President Barack Obama this week.

The network is turning down the president’s request to show his prime-time news conference on Wednesday. The news conference marks Obama’s 100th day in office. Instead of the president, Fox viewers will see an episode of the Tim Roth drama “Lie to Me.”

It’s the first time a broadcast network has refused Obama’s request. This will be the third prime-time news conference in Obama’s presidency. ABC, CBS and NBC are airing it.

Deirdre

A lot of people will see Fox as politically motivated but I think it has a lot more to do with Tuesday and Wednesday being Fox’s bread basket nights. They stay on top of the ratings and make a lot of money on those nights. And this is, what, the THIRD time the President has planned a news conference for an Idol night.

I commend Fox for this. The President can be seen and heard on just about every other network as well as all the news channels. It’s not like people who want to listen to him will be left in the lurch.

Neg’s 2 year old son David is in the hospital after a life-threatening and inexplicable seizure-type episode on Sunday. I heard a strange noise like he was throwing up or coughing, heard my daughter yell for me, found David on the bed with his jaw clenched unresponsive, and after having no luck hitting him on the back managed restart his breathing again with my finger inducing his gag reflex.

After a day at the doctor yesterday, we were in the hospital most of today watching him go through a battery of torture tests to try and get clues for what happened. Thus far, his brain was scanned clear and perfect, his heart tested great, urine was clean, and we have no definitive conclusions from the doctors as to what happened. I am home with my 4 year old daughter tonight while my wife is at the hospital with David who remains hooked up overnight to monitors awaiting more torture tomorrow..

Life is fragile… we are thankful that nothing bad has shown up, but still very anxious about what happened and what comes next.

I am sure you and Mrs neg have been through the whole checklist, but does David have any allergies? have you recently changed detergent, fabric softener, etc that you wash his clothes or sheets in? Did you use a new cleaner or anything on the floors or carpets? A lot of household products will cause siezures and an anaphalactic reaction like he seems to have had just by breathing them in.

I have tried to find the link this morning, but last night, just at 11 o’clock, when I should have been in bed, Showbiz Tonight came on with the lead story about why everyone in America is so much more caught up in Britain’s Got Talent and Susan Boyle, than they are in American Idol and any of the contestants this year. They posit that the show pales in comparison to “Talent” because of so many restrictions and requirement for qualification. It was a bit disturbing, because I actually bought in to some of what they were saying, and I have always been a big Idol fan. They kept showing the excellent group dance from last week, then cutting to Boyle and some of the other talent on the Brit show, then suggested that Simon was probably bored with Idol.

Deirdre

Deirdre

April 28th, 2009
8:34 am

First, American Idol is more “restrictive” because it’s a singing competition, not a talent competition. No dancers, no magicians, no ventriloquists, no jugglers. I’ve always thought that the age restrictions were a bit silly, with the exception that Idol does not exploit the very young. That adorable little girl on last year’s America’s Got Talent was way too young to be part of that competition. But I’ve never seen anything wrong with having contestants in their 30’s or 40’s.

That being said, the media is still flabbergasted that Idol’s ratings are holding up fairly well in its 8th season…a time when almost everyone thought the show would be fading into oblivion. It will go off the air one day. We’re all becoming a little jaded by it at this point. When I compare the talent of the first season with the talent this year…..with the exception of Kelly and Tamyra….season 8 far outshines our starry eyed vision of season 1. We were innocent and gleeful back then….we’re not anymore.

According to Paula on a radio show…tonight’s surprise mentor will be Jamie Foxx. The contestants are rehearsing only ONE song.

Yes, D, I know and agree about the things you pointed out. I just thought it was worthy of some mention here. I sort of agreed with some of what was said, but do agree about the talent level this year. Perhaps the personality level this year is not as great as some years’, but the overall talent is superb.

I hate to hear about the mentor tonight. I am NOT a fan of the mentors at all. And, really, most contestants do what they wanted to in the first place, largely ignoring advice from the mentors. I won’t beat that horse any longer. I think I visited the subject ad nauseum last season.

I still love American Idol. What I DON’T love is the shift from the contestants and their back stories, ongoing stories, efforts, etc., to the yammering of the judges AND ryan. I don’t WANT to see paula and simon bickering the whole show. It was minutely entertaining when it happened once a show but now it’s EVERY contestant, and some in between. I don’t WANT to hear Kara give a dissertation about “artistry” — maybe she could cut her time by just going “Artistry. Creativity. Sellable.” or “No Artistry. Not Sellable. No creativity.” Boom. DONE.

ANd randy, well, what CAN i say — he opens every show and starts my teeth grinding as soon as they introduce the judges. RANDY is the only person in the room booing at Simon’s introduction! PuhLEEZE Randy, that’s sooooooo immature and it’s gotten waaaaay old!

Randy’s 3-6 word comments could be “Dawg/Dude. Pitchy/Perfect. Sick/Awful.” (sick of course is the new “excellent” i guess) Boom. DONE.

There’s no hope for Paula, BUT…at least her ramblings are entertaining in the sense that they make NO sense and are fun to analye … to a POINT.

With Youtube, we get “agog” about stuff almost every day. Susan Boyle is good but she’s not perfect. Her temporary popularity is all about that voice coming out of that lady. We’re a visual nation. If we’d heard her voice on the radio, we would have said yes, very nice, let’s move on. Without Youtube, Susan Boyle doesn’t even exist for us.

My point being…we hear ONE person on a UK show and start assuming that the show is way better than here, has much more talent than here, is a better run show than here. That’s media hype. Controversy has to exist these days or the media thinks there’s nothing to talk about. The media has to keep us agitated or they lose their audience.

I agree that the ‘tweaks’ Idol has made this year have mostly failed.

The addition of the 4th judge was a big mistake. Kara hasn’t added anything to the mix. Too much time is used up focusing on the judges’ comments rather than the contestants.

The save rule became a joke. Maybe if they had just not used it, I would have appreciated it more. Why save someone who is going anyway? It should be used ONLY in dire circumstances.

Paula and Simon’s “friendship” has become almost intolerable. It started out annoyingly childish and has become, lately, annoyingly smarmy. Seriously, sometimes I just want to tell them to get a room and get it over with so we can focus on the contestants.

Ryan always seems to want to get things going with Simon. Maybe he misses the old banter…but it isn’t “banter” anymore, it’s more like using a cattle prod to get a result. He and Simon used to come across as friends having a good time at each other’s expense…it doesn’t come across that way at all anymore.

They seemed to start the season TRYING to focus on the singers but it never lasted. We saw the mansion where they lived…twice? The only place we can get to know them better as people has been Idol Wrap(is that the name of the after-show?)

The show has run overtime almost every season but they always managed to get 10 songs into a one hour top 5 show. They can’t even get 7 songs in now without running over. That says a lot about all the extraneous factors that are interfering with the competition.

Thanks to everyone from the bottom of my heart for your well wishes. Hope to be blogging tonight about Idol instead of giving hospital updates.

Deirdre regarding your 10:14 post I have to add a few more wrongs from this season: the cheesiness of having the judges march in as if they were the only focus of the show, the initial mistake of hiding the band, and the poor camera or director work that this year more then ever catches the judges chit-chatting while all the contestants are singing.

Of all the gimmicks used this year to shake things up, I can’t think of one that I am impressed with

Completely agree, JT. I was relieved when they stopped the judges’ “entrance”. The “chit-chat” among the judges is unbelievably rude and extremely distracting!

Technically it’s been a very bad season. Maybe next year they could eliminated 2 judges and only allow them to speak at the end of the show…if there’s time!

Here’s something interesting. Someone claims that Adam was on his Twitter…thingy…last night and said that he had just finished rehearsing his TWO songs for the show.

The official site is saying they’ll be singing ONE song tonight! Did they have those kids rehearse TWO songs only to cut one to make room for the judges and Jamie Foxx……because they ain’t gonna make any friends THAT WAY!!!!!!

Deirdre, why don’t they just hire us to direct the show while they put up the money as producers. I guarandayumtee we would do better than they are!!! We could form a consortium — Mike, JT, you, me, Negster, Nana, Harriett, Lara, our left coast gals, everett and GAgirl (along with JT of course) among others … could put together a better show altogether!

JT i totally agree about hiding the band and the “rudeness” shots by the cameras.

if i was directing…. well…. i’d be calling on you guys for advice, for SURE, LOLOLOLOL!!!

They can’t fit in 10 songs and give Foxx a little pimping for his new movie, so they will give us 5 songs instead? I seriously hope it is 10 songs, they can fit in a little fluffing for Mr. Ego. They’ve worked it in the past, work it again tonight.

Excuse me…the official site isn’t saying anything…Paula is the one who said they’d be singing one song.

Here’s a Twitter from an Idol back up singer who has been giving cryptic song spoiler hints all season:

“At Idol rehearsal. Trying to figure out what exactly we’re supposed 2 sing on this Foxx tune. ”

This was released yesterday. Think about the possibility that the Idols were cut to 1 song to make room for Jamie Foxx.

It looks like we will have to wait and see. If Jamie Foxx is the mentor I could see him performing Wednesday night.

Linny – count me in on that group.
D – WHAT? Cut the contestants down to get Jamie Foxx to sing a lame song? AGH!
Negs – we are with you, no matter where you are. Here is hoping that you and your family are all home tonight and enjoying some AI on the couch!

Hello Everyone! Sorry about your son Neg. I have already sent one up to the big guy for him. Tonight should be very good. I am really looking forward to it. Kudos to Fox for sticking with the original programming wednesday night!

I posted this before but I’m going to have to do it again. apparently I need to edit one of the words that Simon used. :-) TV Guide asked Simon:

Who has surprised you the most this season?
Kris. Better than I thought. Adam, we knew he was great and Danny, we knew he was great. But seven weeks ago, nobody would have predicted the possibility that the third place is Kris. He’s just quietly got on with the job. He didn’t get the praise he should have gotten last week because of the c**kup with the timing. I would have really, really given him a confidence boost.

What has Jamie Foxx got to do with the Rat Pack theme anyway? Am I missing something here?

JTesla

Good question KPH. I don’t see an association between his new movie and the Fox network so it isn’t one of their cross-promotion tricks.

Nana

I can’t figure out what Jamie Foxx has to do with the Ray Pack neither KPH. Why could the producers even bring him on to mentor the theme tonight? In my mind, it just doesn’t make good sense.

Idol needs to modify the judges critiques and not allow Paula to make comments that are gobbledygook. I don’t think her advise is hortatory except once in a while.

Neg, please keep us updated on David. You and Mrs. Neg try to get some rest.

Please disregard the first part of my last post. After it posted, I read it and it didn’t even make good sense to me. :( Meant to say RAT Pack and why WOULD the producers. So sorry for the typos.

I knew what you meant Nana, made more sense then the mentor pick that’s for sure. Ray Pack must be a comination of Jamie Foxx’s character Ray with the Rat Pack.

Exactly, KPH. Jamie Foxx mentoring Rat Pack week??? Yeah, that makes sense! What? Is he going to do a Sammy Davis, Jr impersonation? (And if that’s the case, they should have got Billy Crystal!)
Oh, wait, …it couldn’t have anything to do with some kind of cross promotion for his new movie, could it? I’m sure the AI producers wouldn’t stoop to such a transparent farce! (Any sarcasm detected is purely intentional!)

Of course, the ‘mentor’ usually performs on the results show Wednesday night, not the Tuesday show, but with the problems they had getting 7 songs in on time I don’t see how they could do 10 this season!

And, personally, I’d rather hear 5 COMPLETE songs rather than 10 chopped up, shortened arrangements. At times, it seems like AI is great training for the contestants to learn how to sing a medley since they never get to do a full song on the show (until the final winner’s song, anyway.)

Maybe we will see tonight but I dont get it. Someone like Tony Bennett should be the mentor for tonight.

I don’t mind the mentor segments (when they’re done well) and I like Jamie Foxx (except when he’s making ignorant comments on a radio show), I just don’t think he would be anyone’s informed choice to mentor Rat Pack week.

Has anyone seen anything official yet that confirms he is this weeks mentor? Or will we have to wait and see tonight?

Rodney?? Any news???

I’m back!

I don’t get the Jamie Foxx thing either. What I meant by cutting the Idols songs to make room for Foxx was that he needs to get plenty of air-time with his mentoring skills and reminding people about his movie….which I’d go to see for Robert Downey Jr…I frankly haven’t seen Jamie do anything good since Ray…The Kingdom was a good movie but the role he played was pretty generic.

mj’s has confirmed that Jamie Foxx is mentoring(this from a Paula radio interview) AND that the Idols will only be singing one song!

I think it’s time for a major protest of the way the Idols are being ignored for the celebrities!

Harriett you are right. Most of the mentors have been cheesy with not much actual input. A couple over the years have been good for some of the contestants however.
