4/24: American Idol “Rat Pack” theme pondered

Last week, I hit the mark with two of the seven singers. Let’s see how I do this time.

The “Rat Pack” sounds like a fun genre, one they haven’t done in years. Will it only be songs sung by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr.? Or will they stretch it to the likes of Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole and Perry Como? I presume the latter.

My guess is this will be another ballad-heavy episode.

Adam Lambert has shown he can sing any genre (save for country) so he’ll breeze through this. It will be interesting to see how Allison will handle this genre especially since most of the known artists in this field were guys. Here is an online radio station that plays this style of music.

I’m going to try my best with suggestions based on my relatively limited knowledge:

Kris Allen
“Beyond the Sea” Bobby Darin
“I Left My Heart in San Francisco” Tony Bennett
“I’ve Got the World On a String” Frank Sinatra

Allison Iraheta
“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” Frank Sinatra
“Who’s Sorry Now” or “Where the Boys Are,” Connie Francis
“Mambo Italiano” Rosemary Clooney

Matt Giraud
“The Lady is a Tramp” Frank Sinatra
“That’s Amore” Dean Martin
“Mr. Bojangles” Sammy Davis Jr.

Adam Lambert
“Smile” or “L-O-V-E” Nat King Cole
“My Way” Frank Sinatra
“New York, New York” Frank Sinatra (campy, campy!)

Danny Gokey
“Mack the Knife” Bobby Darin
“The Way You Look Tonight” Frank Sinatra & a host of others
“Fly Me to the Moon” Sinatra, Bennett

Good Morning Bloggers — LEt’s kick OSF off with some OLe Blue Eyes!

Strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wondring in the night
What were the chances wed be sharing love
Before the night was through.

Something in your eyes was so inviting,
Something in you smile was so exciting,
Something in my heart,
Told me I must have you.

Strangers in the night, two lonely people
We were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello.
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away,
A warm embracing dance away and -

Ever since that night weve been together.
Lovers at first sight, in love forever.
It turned out so right,
For strangers in the night.

Morning!

Rodney…Connie Francis was NOT a member of the Rat Pack.

I thought I’d combine the two OSF themes today by featuring an Idol singing a Rat Pack song:

And the lyrics:

It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around, and finally found
The somebody who could make me be true
Could make me be blue or even be glad
Just to be sad just thinking of you
Some others I’ve seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss
But they wouldn’t do
For nobody else gave me the thrill
With all your faults I love you still
It had to be you
It had to be you
It had to be you

The 3 singers and songs you picked for Matt Giraud, Sinatra, Martin and Davis, constitute the Rat Pack…anyone else would be stretching it although the show may widen the choices to include the outlying group. Along with the three mentioned above, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop were also Rat Packers.

Katy here is my earlier post from the previous thread that had my quote.

Good Morning. We made it to Friday and almost through another week.

Today’s Quote: ” It’s better to have known love and loose it than to have never known it at all.”

Since I started OSF last night, I will restrain myself (hope ya’ll watch the videso) from doing another now and will wait until I get to work. Since I have my last employee meeting today at 6:00. I will be going in late.

Have a good day and I will be back later this morning. Need to do some house cleaning before I leave.

Well, it looks like Odumbo will be messing with IDol again next week. He has “requested” an hour of network air time next Wednesday. So Fox will either bump Idol or Lie to Me. Depends on what time the one wants to babble his nonsense.

Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, dont patronize – dont patronize me

Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont
cause I cant make you love me, if you dont

Ill close my eyes, then I wont see
The love you dont feel when youre holding me
Morning will come and Ill do whats right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont

I’m offering this next Idol/Rat Pack combo as an example of why Lil was NOT good enough to go as far as she did. This is Vonzell Solomon(good voice but not high up on the best Idol divas list) singing People(I’m assuming I don’t have to print the lyrics for this one.

IMO, Vonzell is a standout compared to Lil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4qrTMBqEMw

People who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
Were children needing other children

And yet letting our grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children
Lovers
Are very special people
Theyre the luckiest people in the world
With one person,
One very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you are half now youre whole
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people
People, people who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world.

With one person

The Lyrics

Hey, well I’m the friendly stranger
In the black sedan
Oh won’t you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
I’d like to take you to the nearest star
I’m your vehicle baby
I’ll take you anywhere you wanna go
I’m your vehicle woman
By now I’m sure you know
That I love ya (love you)
Need ya (need you)
I want to, got to have you child
Great God in heaven, you know I love you
Well if you want to be a movie star
I got the ticket to Hollywood
Well if you want to stay just like you are
You know I think you really should
I’m your vehicle baby
I’ll take you anywhere you wanna go
I’m your vehicle woman
By now I’m sure you know
That I love ya (love you)
I need ya (need you)
I want to, got to have you child
Great God in heaven you know I love you
Oh you know I do
Well I’m the friendly stranger
In the black sedan
Oh won’t you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
I’d like to take you to the nearest star
I’m your vehicle baby
I’ll take you anywhere you wanna go
I’m your vehicle woman
By now I’m sure you know
That I love ya (love you)
I need ya (need you)
I want to, got to have you child
Great God in heaven you know I love you
And I’m your vehicle babe
Oooh
You know I love ya (love you)
I need ya (need you)
I want to, got to have you child
Great God in heaven you know I love you

Spinning Wheel

What goes up must come down
Spinnin’ wheel got to go ’round
Talkin’ ’bout your troubles it’s a cryin’ sin
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin’ wheel spin

You got no money and you got no home
Spinnin’ wheel all alone
Talkin’ ’bout your troubles and you never learn
Ride a painted pony let the spinnin’ wheel turn

Did you find the directing sign on the
Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign
Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real

Someone is waiting just for you
Spinnin’ wheel, spinnin’ true

JT…you have to remember that we’re showcasing the BEST of the former Idols over a period of 7 years. I would add Kris Allen’s version of Ain’t No Sunshine, which was fantastic. And Adam’s version of Tracks of My Tears was a standout as well.

Vonzell, for example, was just ok compared to Melinda or Jennifer or even Kat but many former Idols have had outstanding single performances that kept them going even though they were not winning material.

Deirdre: I still just find it hard to swallow the many statements that have been made that this is the year with the best vocal talent. The Elliot video just reminded me of why that year was so good, he could sing perfectly without being a bore (Kris and Danny). He wouldn’t be able to stop the Adam juggernaut, but he could beat eveyone else.

No time to read, but if no one mentioned it, Shirley McLaine was also considered a member of the outer core of the Rat Pack (Sinatra, Dean, Davis being the inner core, and Lawford and Bishop, with McLaine in the outer core, with JFK an honorary member) And i believe Mike mentioned Judy Garland… BUT… if you just take the music of the era that fits within their general genra — there ARE a few more to include, yes? Ella and Louis are considered part of the era, from my reading, as well.

Deirdre

Ive got you under my skin
Ive got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart, that youre really a part of me
Ive got you under my skin

Ive tried so not to give in
Ive said to myself this affair never will go so well
But why should I try to resist, when baby will I know than well
That Ive got you under my skin

Id sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear

Dont you know you fool, you never can win
Use your mentality, wake up to reality
But each time I do, just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
cause Ive got you under my skin

JT…I understand what you’re saying….I’m not on the “best group ever” bandwagon either but I really like some of the singers this year. Some day, when I’m awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you…
And the way you look tonight.

Yes you’re lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.

With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart…
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.

Lovely … Never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won’t you please arrange it ?
‘Cause I love you … Just the way you look tonight.

Mm, Mm, Mm, Mm,
Just the way you look to-night.

Guy Theodore Sebastian (born 26 October 1981) is an Australian, singer-songwriter and winner of the first Australian Idol television talent competition quest in 2003. Since winning the competition, he has released four top four albums and seven top twenty singles and sold over 1.3 million cds (including 800,000 albums) in Australia alone. He has been awarded 10 Platinum Accreditations for albums (the highest for any Australian Idol contestant, according to official Australian Recording Industry Association records, and 6 Platinum and 2 Gold accreditations for singles. His first two albums sold well over their accreditation levels. Just as I Am was accredited 6XPlatinum but had actual sales of 480,000,and Beautiful Life, accredited Platinum, sold over 100,000 units. Sebastian also had substantial success overseas with his first release with #1 hits in New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, The Philippines and Indonesia. His success outside Australia is most evident in New Zealand, where his first single (Angels Brought Me Here) was accredited Platinum. It spent 3 weeks at #1, and remained in the NZ Top 50 chart for 22 weeks during 2003/2004. His first album (Just As I Am) reached #3 on the New Zealand charts, and is certified 2xPlatinum there, and his 2nd single (All I Need Is You) peaked at #5, and spent 14 weeks in their Top 50.

Pretty good statistics I think. I also have 2 of his albums and like his music a great deal. To each his own I guess. :-)

So build me up (Build me up)

Don’t break my heart

You tell me time and again
But you’re late
I wait around and then
I went to the door
I can’t take any more
It’s not you
You let me down again

Baby Baby
Try to find a little time
And I’ll make you happy
I’ll be home
I’ll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.

Why do you build me up….
To you I’m a toy
But I could be the boy
You adore
If you’d just let me know
Although you’re untrue
I’m attracted to you
All the more
Why do I need you so Baby Baby…..

Lyrics to Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
Wooly Bully

One, two, three, four
All right
Watch it, watch it
Say man

Hattie told Mattie
About a thing she saw
Had two big horns
And a wooly jaw

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully

Hattie told Mattie
Don’t you take no chance
Don’t you be L7
Come and learn this dance

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully

Hey watch it now, man
Watch it, watch it

Mattie told Hattie it’s the thing to do
Get yourself a filly
To pull the wool with you

Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully

No no I never was a sinner–tell me what else can I do
Second best is what you get ’til you learn to bend the rules
And time respects no person–what you lift up must fall
They’re waiting outside to claim my tumblin’ walls
Saw my picture in the paper
Read the news around my face
And now some people don’t want to treat me the same
When the walls… come tumblin’ down
When the walls… come crumblin’ crumblin’
When the walls come tumblin’ tumblin’ down
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

My hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I cant seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you thank when you have such luck?
Im in love
Im all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

Nana, the Sam the Sham had me laughing till tears came outta my eyes. What a strange and wonderful performance. Please don’t misunderstand, I adore that song, but that presentation was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. And what was up with those two women who just stood stock-still through the whole thing, just lookin’ 60’s beautiful? Loved it. Thank you.

GAgirl, glad all is well in SoCal now. Used to keep hard-sole shoes by my bed in case I had to run through broken glass after a quake. Were they rollers or shakers? Rollers are the worst.

Hi everett…shakers this time. First one I ever experienced was a roller…wierd feeling. I keep shoes and a flashlight nect to me bed and I’ve learned it’s best to sleep with my jammies on….just in case. Me running naked out the door would not be a pretty site.

CONTENT WARNING TO PURISTS: The following question has nothing to do with the Rat Pack.

Need some help, blogfriends. There’s a song running around in my brain, nippin’ at the edges of my memory. Some of the lyrics are “I’m a man, yes I am, and I cannot help but love you so.” What song IS that and who sang it? Thank you in advance….I know one of y’all will be able to nail it.

Chicago covered the song later. Not sure which version you’re remembering.

I’m A Man by Chicago

Well my pad is very messy, got whiskers on my chin
Never had no problems ’cause I’ve always paid the rent
I got no time for lovin’
Cause my time is all used up
I stand outside creatin’
All the groovy kinds of love
I’m a man, yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Oh baby
I’m a man, yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Yes I am
If I had my choice of matter
I’d would rather be with cats
All engrossed in mental chatter,
Showing where your mind is at
While relating to each other
How strong the love can be
By resisting all the good times with each groovy chick we see
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Oooh, I’m a man, yes I am
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
I love to hear you talk
I’ve got to keep my image
While I’m standing on the floor
If I drop upon my knees
It’s just to keep them on my nose
You think that I’m not human
And my heart is made of stone
But I’ve never had no problems
And my body’s pretty strong
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes I know
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Oooh
Man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Good god I love you so, love you so
If I had my choice of matter
I would rather be with cats
All engrossed in mental chatter
Knowin’ where your mind is at
While relating to each other
How good a love can be
By resisting all the good times with each groovy chick we see
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Yes I am
I’m a man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
Yeah, yeah yeah. I’m a
Man yes I am and I can’t help but love you so
I’m a man, ooh yes I am
I gotta keep my image
While I’m standin on the floor
If I drop upon my knees (?)
?
You think that I’m not human
And my heart is made of stone
But I never had no problems
And my body’s pretty strong
I’m a
Man, yes I am, and I can’t help but love you so
Owww.. I’m A
Man, yes I am, and I can’t help but love you so
Man, yes I am, and I can’t help but love you so
Man, yes I am, and I can’t help but love you so

That’s going way back, the only thing I could think of was Berlin’s “Sex (I’m a)” where the male vocal just keeps saying “I’m a man” I’ll withhold the rest of the lyrics. I don’t want to upset some of the more delicate among us.

Has an Idol contestant ever done a Berlin song? Something off Pleasure Victim would be nice.
