4/21: Can the judges stop rambling?

With four judges, time seems to be an issue, especially now that the show is down to an hour from a luxurious two.

In an AP story about Kara DioGuardi, a producer said they are trying to make the judges aware that time is of the essence:

Cecile Frot-Coutaz, an executive producer on “Idol,” said producers envisioned a fourth judge could create a time crunch.

“It’s hard for (the judges) to figure out whether they’ve spoken for 30 seconds or 45 seconds, so … we’re going to try and help them with that and give them a sense of their timing so that we keep it under control a bit more,” Frot-Coutaz said.

Who do you think is the biggest rambler among the four judges?

The story also noted that DioGuardi would get long winded and over-use industry jargon (e.g. “artistry”). But the producers say they support DioGuardi and have no plans of dropping her.

-The weekly odds from bookmaker.com didn’t change much from seven days ago except Adam’s chances went up while every one else went down. Matt & Lil took especially big drops and Kris is now edging out Allison.

1. Adam Lambert -350 (up from -285 a week ago)
2. Danny Gokey +325 (down from +280 a week ago)
3. Kris Allen +1400 (down from +1200 a week ago)

Good Morning to All!!!

Today’s Quote: “Smiles are wondrous things; you can give them out for eternity and always have one for yourself.”

Harm – glad you enjoyed little Asa. Bet he has grown a bunch. I did see the 10 y/o boy that you were referring to. For such a young child, he definitely has a set of vocals. But that Susan Boyd is just totally awesome.

The judges may have to have someone time their comments to keep them under 45 seconds or less. Running over each week is not good.

Does anyone have a song list for tonight yet?

Morning!

In-laws still here although I may have some time to join you today. I fell yesterday after rolling my ankle. My foot is the size of a football. Going for x-rays in a little while. Won’t stop me from watching Idol. :-) I’ll chat when I can.

Oh, my goodness, Dierdre! So sorry about your fall. I do hope it isn’t broken. Two days before Christmas in 2007 I slipped on wet leaves and broke my ankle. Thankfully, no surgery was involved. We will send good thoughts your way and pray it is only a sprain or a strain.

Deirdre… milk the ankle injury and make sure everyone in your life stands in line to wait on your every need. Opportunities like these are rare!
Britain’s got Talent: the PR-meisters are working overtime. If Susan were even moderately attractive there wouldn’t be a story here. She’ll be forgotten in a few weeks, the William Hung of 2009… another in a long line of novelty acts. 12 yr old Shaheen looks to be a major talent with a possible future. But either way, it looks like they’re trying to pump enough air into this show to make it easier for Cowell to leave Idol.
Judges: Kara definitely needs a word count monitor but I can count on one hand the number of times Paula EVER contributed anything useful… in her case, brevity is almost never the soul of wit.

Offkey – Simon is the executive Producer of BGT and has been thier main judge for 3 years. HE has multiple shows in Britain and the US that he produces. He does IDol because of the money – $29 Mil per year – and because he enjoys the celebrity it gives him over here. He does not need Idol at all, and if he leaves it will be because he is bored of it and not because of BGT.

As for Susan Boyle, you are about as dead wrong as possible. In the US she might be forgotten in a few weeks, but she is going to be the next Paul Potts in Britain. He is an Opera singer who won BGT 3 years ago — might be even homlier than Susan, but with an amazing voice. He has been basically nothing in the US, but his Opera Album has been #1 in 16 different countries and has sold over 40 Million copies (twice the sales of ALL American Idol contestants combined).

Sorry about your ankle D. :( Just hope it isn’t broken. Of course sometimes a sprain/strain is WORSE than a break, but hopefully, not in your case. In 2002, a week week before we were to go to Mickey Land, I tripped over a rug at work and broke my foot, but still went to see Mickey and Minnie. Had youngest daughter, her hubby and at the time her 6 y/o twins. Nothing was going to stop me from going. Worked to our advantage. Since hubby pushed me in wheelchair (Cast on foot to knee) we went to the front of the lines on all rides. No waiting. But seriously, hope you are alright.

That Paul Potts that Mike S spoke of above, is absolutely terrific, and I think that Ms. Boyle will be as well.

Anyone know who is singing what tonight? I’ve tried to search other sites to find out but am batting a zero.

Neg, you missed the point completely. Hung became a 15 minute celeb because he couldn’t sing a lick, but believed he could. Susan is a 15 minute celeb because she’s ugly and quirky, but they have the same thing in common. They’re oddities. And who cares if she becomes the Shetland Islands top dinner opera performer? Paul Potts? I’m sure he can’t go anywhere in Surrey without being pestered. Now try to get a table in LA. As far as Cowell leaving Idol.. it wouldn’t hurt if the British show had a larger worldwide distribution, would it? When you’re worth a fortune, what’s another 30 million, but they’re all publicity hounds when you get right down to it. And they’re bleeding this Susan nonsense dry.

one more worthless opinion. I think this could be the last viable Idol season. The show has been sloppy, the talent pool mediocre. The four judge idea is a mess, the judge’s save a cheap dramatic stunt. The show is starting to feel stale, despite the executive tricks to pump it up, and if Cowell jumps ship… They’ll try to bring in some other smart-ass to replace him and it will fail. Might take a year or two to kill it, but I think they’re jumping the shark even as we speak.

Offkey, I have one minor point to raise regarding your 11:36 post: I think LAST season may have been the last viable season for all the reasons you brought up. I’m not ready to write the American Idol obituary, but if they don’t do something to correct the errors that they have made then each season will be one more spiral closer to being flushed.

We’ll start tonight and see tonight if the producers can put out a show that displays the contestants and not the producers blunders.

seriously, if Susan can parlay this lucky break into success that will not completely ruin her life, hats off to her. Few of us are ever handed such an opportunity. I’m just encouraging you to be a bit skeptical of the media hype machine, as linny pointed out. And simply for the sake of contrast, Shaheen is a 12 year old prodigy possibly with a bright future. Susan has had that voice her whole life (47) and is only now being discovered? She distributed an audition to several recording companies ten years ago and nobody was interested.

Deirdre, since I don’t have anyone looking over my shoulder today and time to kill, a few observations on your song list to stoke the discussion. If Anoop does Ladies Night he’s toast. Lil has to generate some originality to stay in the competition, and I don’t think MacPark is a creative enough choice. Remember, 2 are going home this week. September would be a good choice for Matt, or Kris, or Danny. It’s just a great song. Call Me might be too safe a choice for Adam, and unless he tinkers with it, would not challenge his range at all. Debra Harry was not a great vocalist and her songs, while catchy, were pretty flat notewise. Allison, Dancing Queen? I don’t know, it feels too slow. Her act needs a little more energy right now.

I probably shouldn’t even raise the question about a disco theme night in the first place. It seems like a completely irrelevant genre. As a recent poster observed, who’s doing that music right now? Other stuff makes a lot more sense if the show is supposed to be young and fresh. Otherwise, why not throw in a “vaudeville” week or Light Opera Classics?

Nana

April 21st, 2009
1:28 pm

I would say that approximately over 50% of AI viewers have never heard disco, but also they have never heard any Motown, or any other genre that dates back to the 70’s and prior. The thing is, the producers need to have many genres to determined if a contestant can sing different types. I realize that it would be difficult for a R&B to do pure Country and vise versa, but it can be done. However, if you have the talent to sing, you should be able to sing other music than what you are comfortable with and what is current and what one grew up with. You have to have versatility and be able to move outside your comfort zone. What it boils down to is the marketability of the contestant and dollar signs as seen by the producers.

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

April 21st, 2009
1:35 pm

offkey, i am 100000% with you on the relevance of disco — i guess the rationale is “to see if they can do anything WITH it” but…. blech, imho!!! and your points about the demise of AI might be right on — but they have a chance to DO something about it, the question is WILL they…

we’ll see!!!

offkey

April 21st, 2009

Nana, I agree about the need to show versatility, but disco? That was such a narrow and limited field of work. Motown may be dated, but it encompassed a lot of different styles. Country is obviously current. But why not have a rap or hip-hop theme night? Metal? Techno? Show tunes? If the contestants are criticized for making poor song choices, why can’t we challenge the producers for the same thing?

Mike S

April 21st, 2009
1:40 pm

Exactly Nana, not to mention that almost everything put out since 1990 has been tuneless, melodyless, inane dreck.

There is a very good reason why weeks like 90’s week, 00’s week, Pick your own week (Otherwise known as top downloads), current top 100 week have been by and far the absolute worst disasters of any week in Idol history, and it was not because of the singers themselves. And, I don’t say that because I thought the weeks were horrible, everyone over and over said they were horrible, including the judges.

Mike S

April 21st, 2009
1:47 pm

The week IDol has a Rap/HIp Hop week is the week the show jumps the shark and falls from #1.

FOr all the hand-wringing, and ringing the death bell for Idol — even with ratings down 5-10% it is STILL the #1 show and has ratings twice that of the #2 show. Until it falls out of #1 Idol cannot be considered a failing show. Once that happens, then yes all bets are off, as I agree it will fall rapidly.

Also, Idol is at the point most successful TV shows start to fade. History shows that shows flourish for 5-6 seasons, then start a slow decline (As Idol did last year), and then the producers tinker (As with this season), and the show lasts another couple years with OK ratings, then comes the huge drop.

Now this does fit with what Offkey is saying and will happen to Idol in some way, but Idol has such high ratings it can probably hold on much like M*A*S*H, ER, etc and make it easily past 10 seasons before dropping from #1. Idol also has on its side the fact that in the past the longest sustaining shows usually are variety shows (Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, etc)

offkey

April 21st, 2009
1:51 pm

I recognize the fact that most of us would absolutely detest a hip-hop week, but in my opinion it is far more relevant to today’s music scene than this cheesy disco nonsense. Look at the charts and tell me what’s been dominating for the past few years and yet Idol has never done a hip-hop theme week. Why not? (waiting to see who opens that can of worms, hint, hint) If they make Lil sing country, why not have Danny give Bow Wow a shot?

offkey

Nana

April 21st, 2009
2:03 pm

I agree offkey, that disco was short lived and the idols tonight may completely kill it off forever, then to, they just may one of the best nights. The producers should do hip-hop, rap, or whatever is more modern today, but, there again, they are trying to create an idol that is diversed in more than one genre and who they think can sell to make more money for them. If I’m not mistaken, they have themes of Broadway Hits, and the Big Band Era, and, the contestants did fairly well. There are alot of different styles the producers can select from, but I think they are sticking to the ones that they have had the most success with And yes, they have had disco before. One has to have the talent to excell and with this comes the versatility and the marketability. IMO, these two qualities can’t be omitted and seperated from talent. None of three becomes one dimemsional.

Mike S

Just a moment to interject here, then back to the salt mines. I think all of this is a tempest in a teapot, frankly. When it comes down to it, I think they will have a liberal interpretation of “disco.” I remember from last week’s discussion I suggested that on Pandora, they call The Commodores’ “Easy” disco. Suggestions for keeping the judges on time. Put a pie launcher in front of Kara attached to an NBA shot clock. Replace Paula with a cardboard cut out just smiling and flashing the peace sign. Randy gets to bark twice if he like the performance and rolls over and plays dead if he doesn’t. Simon gets a pistol with the barrel engraved with the words “if I’m being honest”… he points it at the contestant and pulls the trigger… dramatic pause… a flag that says “bang” if the performance is good and a paint ball between the eyebrows if he hates it.

Offkey, as you know dissent is not permitted when it comes to Neg’s picks. To emphasize my rightness, I would like to say that the comparisons to Freddy Mercury have been 100% beneficial for him, and to slam home Freddy’s most flamboyant, flaming disco hit ever would only solidify his spot as the favorite. The one comparison he absolutely must avoid at all costs moving forward is the Steven Tyler persona, which seems to only irritate judges and voters alike.

Sorry, Neg, I’ve never been very good at the obedience thing. The Mercury comparisons benefit Adam as long as he avoids going head to head against the legend… a battle I don’t think he could win right now. And he doesn’t have the “lip”itude for Tyler. Adam wins every week by keeping us off balance and then, love it or hate it, delivering an on-target performance. He has our attention, he keeps us guessing. Does anyone really care what Matt or Kris do tonight?

Negaliscious

Actually, the only one who is of zero interest to me is Noop. Both Matt and Kris have some compelling abilities and one or the other could finish as high as 3rd or low as out this week. Noop is vocally unidentifiable and irrelevant, and almost guaranteed to be going home this week after he nerds his way.

100% on board with Anoop. The only mystery is whether he’ll choose to look completely idiotic by going upbeat or plays it safe with another crooner. Matt and Kris… doesn’t really matter what they do, although I agree they’re both talented. Kris might have had a shot but two straight vanilla weeks have dampened what little star appeal he may have generated. I still think Danny has the best chance at a final two versus Adam because they are polar opposites and attract a completely different voting base.

Interesting point about the voting, and something we haven’t talked about much. Who would gain the most from Lil’s departure? And does Danny gain the most each successive week from losing Anoop, Matt or Kris? It’s one reason I’m skeptical of Adam’s chances to win the competition if he gets to the finals. Right now five of the seven remaining performers are what I would call “mainstream”, the antithesis of Adam in most ways. It’s hard to imagine too many voters whose first choice is one of those, jumping over to Adam as a number two.

I am not certain that Adam is as all-or-nothing as many of you guys are. I think plenty of people are still not sure what to make of him and are in the undecided category. I myself am somewhat in that category. I very much look forward to seeing him, but it’s still because he’s such an oddity, so different, and so over-the-top that he commands attention. I would vote for him over Noop, Lil, Matt and Kris, but not over Danny or Allison.

I think many of us are still a little conflicted about his act; appreciate his abundance of of talent but also find him a bit annoying and garish, so we are still noncommittal as we remain at arms length cautiously watching how the rest of his journey plays out.
