4/13: The movie theme pondered, Simon Cowell threatens to leave again

This theme is wildly broad, as in any song that’s ever been in a movie. This isn’t always a good thing. Just look at the lame songs they selected two weeks ago for “download” week. It’s almost like too much choice causes creative constriction of the brain.

Here are some ideas for each contestant, based on lists of movie soundtrack songs I found on the Web:

Danny Gokey
“Purple Rain” Prince
“What a Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong
“Layla” Derek & the Dominoes
“Try a Little Tenderness” The Commitments

Allison Iraheta:
“Take My Breath Away” Berlin
“Bring Me To Life” Evanescence
“Moon River” Audrey Hepburn
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Judy Garland (she can outdo Kat McPhee, right?)

Adam Lambert
“Under Pressure” Queen/David Bowie
“Sweet Emotion” Aerosmith
“Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” GnR
“Heroes” The Wallflowers version
“People are Strange” Echo & the Bunnymen

Matt Giraud
“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” Simple Minds
“St. Elmo’s Fire” John Parr
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” Rolling Stones
“Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” Urge Overkill

Lil Rounds
“New Attitude” Patti LaBelle
“For Your Eyes Only” Sheena Easton
“Tiny Dancer” Elton John (yes, have her try a non R&B ballad and see what she can do!)
“Son of a Preacher Man” Dusty Springfield

Kris Allen
“In Your Eyes” Peter Gabriel
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” Four Seasons
“Sweet Caroline” Neil Diamond

Anoop Desai
“End of the Road’ Boyz II Men
“I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing” Aerosmith
“Everything I Do, I Do It For You” Bryan Adams

The bookmaker.com odds of who will win hasn’t changed much from a week ago though Adam now is the pre-emptive likely winner by a large margin:

1- Adam Lambert -285
2- Danny Gokey +280
3- Allison Iraheta +1000
4- Kris Allen +1200
5- Lil Rounds +1600
6- Matt Giraud +1600
7- Anoop Desai +3500

A quote from the U.K. Mirror from Simon Cowell:

“Most people do one show a year and I do three and they involve a lot of travelling. One may have to go. I don’t know which one. That is the problem, I like all of them. I can’t imagine not doing Britain’s Got Talent and I can’t imagine not doing X Factor. But I guess America is more likely to go because I have got one year under contract. Maybe that will be the end.”

Anwar did “Moon River” a few years ago, to mediocre effect, if my memory serves me correct.

For a song like “Moon River” the artist NEEDS to change it so completely that it no longer sounds like Andy Williams — talk about sounding “old” — that would kill it for at least Simon — but to take the song, perhaps up tempo a little bit,

well, i’ll put it this way… does anyone remember the ORIGINAL “Summertime” …. and then the Sum-Sum-Sum-Summertime…. same words — tooooootally different song! *grin*

but then, someone would probably crucify the artist for “ruining a classic”

whatEVER

Hopefully Lil can change it up this week and not do another mimic performance. Danny needs to change things up too. Moon River? Please no, and no Somewhere Over the Rainbow. She can’t do better than McPhee and didn’t Jason do a cheesy version of it last year with the ukulele? Blech.

Moon River is actually a pretty poor choice for a song to show off your voice. I mean, if Audrey Hepburn could sing it, how difficult could it be?

It will be interesting, as always, to hear the songs they pick. And I wonder just how big their song list is. Even though there are 1000’s of songs from movies, that doesn’t mean they have a list of more than 30 to choose from.

I wish that Idol would release the song list. That way we could spend all day Wednesday second-guessing the song choices! :-)

Hey Bubba, I am pretty sure that Simon “Fuller” (not Cowell) is the executive producer, somebody confirm, sorry if I’m wrong Bub.

Dave you are correct.

Simon Fuller is executive Producer of AI and also head of 19 records.

Simon Cowell is only a judge on Ai, to the tune of a paltry $29 Million a year.

Cowell is however, head of Syco Records, and executive producer of the Got Talent series (America, Britain, Australia), X-factor, Celebrity Duets, American Inventor, Grease is the Word, and Rock Rivals.

No, no one can out do Katharine McPhee on that song. Hers was a true moment, so don’t even try Allison! How about Bohemian Rhapsody instead? Yeah? Yeah. Don’t play, Rodney ;p

The best news is that Jason Castro has a recording contract. He was the BEST ever to appear on Idol, although, no doubt, the judges tried very hard to throw him under the bus. So much for their critiquing.

Justin

Not really. Sometimes people exaggerate saying that songs are done too much on Idol. Sure some of them are, but that song in particular? Not really… as far as I remember it was done by Constantine and Kellie Pickler. Michael Johns in Hollywood (about 20 seconds of it) and for 20 seconds in Lambert’s audition. That’s it right? So really that’s not a lot.

JTesla

April 13th, 2009
11:26 pm

It’s not the number of times, it is the way that those performances have really stood out. The only song Constantine sang that I can name… that one. The only song that Pickler sang that I can name… that one. In fact that is the only Queen song that I remember being done during Queen week. Hmm wait, did someone do Fat Bottom Girls? Was that Hicks? CRAZY! Those performances just really stood out, in fact that song just seems to stand out, so it shouldn’t just be picked up and sung. You will always be compared to those other memorable performances.

Show Day!!!!!!!! Yea!!!!

Dore…nice choice. Adam would be very good with Sweet Child of Mine.

As for the Bohemian Rhapsody discussion. I’m with JT. Both Constantine and Michael did good, almost outstanding versions. People need to avoid it unless they can bring something new or even better to it. Same goes for Rainbow. Kimberly Locke did a terrific version then Kat hit it out of the park. No more Rainbow!

Good Morning to all.

Had a 5:30am meeting at the mfg plant and been at my office for about 1/2 hour so I’m running late. Infact, Deirdre beat me in telling everyone good morning.

Today’s Quote: “Judge me all you want, but keep the verdict to yourself.”

I still say Danny should do the “The Rose”. Does anyone think Adam will do Phantom of the Opera? I think he could take a song from an Elvis movie and do it well. There are just so many songs they can choose from, it will be anybody’s guess on who will do what. I only hope the choices aren’t train wrecks.

Need another cup of coffee to keep me going this morning, so will see ya’ll later today.

Nana…there are so many songs WE can choose from…who knows how many they’ve been given to choose from.

Good morning my blogsters! You know, with there being such an unlimited amoutn of songs from movies, without narrowing it down for me, I just don’t know what to pick…..Hmmmm, could someone do “Dance 10, Looks 3″ from A Chorus Line!?!?!? LOL

Deirdre

April 14th, 2009
9:08 am

harriett, some people thought Kat did Eva Cassidy’s version but if you listen to the 2 versions, she didn’t. It was the same feel as Cassidy’s….and btw, I have never said that Kat’s version was better than Eva Cassidy’s..it wasn’t. But it was beautifully sung.

That year, I was rooting for Chris Daughtry, I also loved Kat and Taylor. I was not a fan of Elliot but understood why so many people liked him.

harriett

D, I remember that. I have three cd’s by Eva Cassidy and love her version of “Rainbow,” but I am thinking there was someone else who actually did the Cassidy version in an earlier season. Maybe I am mistaken. I did not really like Kat, but my male companion who watched with me that year caused me to understand the attraction. LOL!

There was so much Kat-hate going on that year. It’s hard to understand how she even made it to 2nd place with the lava flow of animosity that was out there. I still contend that the show set it up to make Kat look like the bad girl as opposed to Kellie, sweet, innocent and dumb. I also understand that many of her performances were screechy. Trying too hard to hit the BIG notes is a failing of many Idol contestants and Kat was no exception. If I’d had my druthers it would have been a Daughtry/Hicks finale.

Neg’s song choices:

Adam: Space Oddity (Major Tom) – Bowie (Space Oddity)
Danny: Have you ever really loved a woman – Brian Adams (Don Juan Demarco)
Allison: The Rose – Bette Midler (The Rose)
Lil: Think – Aretha Franklin (Blues Bros.)
Kris: No Rain – Blind Melon (Private Parts)
Matt: The Way You Look Tonight – Michael Buble (Swing Time)

We’ll have to keep up with Ms Boyle’s progress on the show.

In the meantime, everywhere that is ranking the Idols, whether by popular vote on a web site or by critical opinion, has Adam first and Allison second. Lil is almost always at the bottom with Anoop next in line. The middle group, Danny, Matt and Kris are jumbled haphazardly in the middle.

Deirdre

I think Neg is trying to get Lil voted off. Aretha? When she couldn’t even do a credible Tina?

Sorry for the hit and run earlier.

Yes, I was definately a Kat hater, but I do have to admit, she had 2 “moments” – the Black Horse and a Cherry Tree floor hump, and the Yellow Dress. :-)

ooo now that I think of that Yellow Dress – make that 4 MOMENTS! and the men know exactly what the other 2 moments are. hehehehehehehe

But I think the Kat haters have been justified by what has happened since AI, Kat is more known for Racy pictures, her 40 something sugar daddy, and acting in really crappy B movies. Much like the Taylor haters like to point out he is more known for Grease than AI now.

Anyway, I think we all agree Daughtry was the true star of that season, and Elliot, Kelly and Bucky have done well for themselves.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you Mike. You obviously haven’t seen much of Kat lately. No more racy pictures. The B movie of which you speak, House Bunny, was a critical and box office success(albeit, she had a small role). In the last few months she’s appeared in PBS specials with David Foster and another special with Chris Botti where she sang an absolutely lovely rendition of I’ve Got You Under My Skin. She, imo, was held back by Idol’s notion that she was the next big pop singer.

You should find a new show to watch if you are so disgusted to the point of wanting to “throw up” when you hear something performed wonderfully. (Do agree with the Yellow Dress though)

And JTesla- not that I disagree, but just an FYI— the “cheesy” version he did was originally recorded by a 700+ lbs. Hawaiian named Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. He is one of the most famous Hawaiian musicians ever. The song has been in several movies and commercials for years.

Dam, I feel privileged, not one but 3 trolls today. I am honored (even if it is really only one MPD with the hots for me).

VoR – we will just have to disagree, just as I do with D, Kat just sings in a range that is like finger nails on a black board to me. Her voice irritated me from her first audition. I don’t consider it a tin ear, but I will admit that there are very few female singers I really really like for just that reason. Allison is in the vocal range I love, the rocky raspy Pat Benetar, Joan jett, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt type sounding voice. When you get into the loud schreechy type female singers I can’t stand any of them, which is wierd because I think Adam is fantastic. LOL

D – I do have to admit Kat was excellent with Chris Botti. I saw that performance and it was absolutely beautiful. And yes, it was totally opposite of what she did on AI and what was on her album. She sounded like a completely different singer. Maybe her voice is maturing some along with her singing style.

With all the Kat talk, I must join in again!
I was only 14 when she was on the show. So….. I was still at that age where I liked people like Kellie and Lisa Tucker. I think I still liked her, but come Top 7/6 I was a big fan. The summer after is when I really became a big fan of hers cause I watched back YouTube videos. She is now my all time favorite. So.. that’s cool to have your favorite being someone you didn’t really pay much attention to until halfway through the show. Love her!

And to the Bohemian Rhapsody thing, I just take it as it comes, I don’t care how many times something’s been sung or who does it when it’s already been done incredibly on the show (except SOTR :p). If someone wants to do Bohemian Rhapsody so be it…I’m always open for a new version
