3/31: Top downloads theme, Danny Gokey’s grandfather passes

Tonight’s theme is vaguely stated as “Top downloads.”

Someone on MJ’s blog also compiled the #1 downloaded songs since Billboard started tracking in 2005.

There are quite a few hip-hop songs that wouldn’t pass muster in “Idol” land (Yah… Scott MacIntyre doing… Flo Rida!) and who knows how many of the songs they could actually clear. A couple have already been sung on “Idol” including “Viva la Vida” and “No One.” In genereal, there are a lot of pop and R&B songs but not a lot for someone like Allison or Megan to work with. Here are a few that might be usable:

“Photograph” Nickelback (Adam Lambert?)
“Don’t Forget About Us” Mariah Carey (Lil Rounds could do a lovely job with this one)
“Dirty Little Secret” All American Rejects (again, Adam?)
“You’re Beautiful” James Blunt (Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, Anoop or Danny Gokey though Scott could try this.)
“Bad Day” Daniel Powter (A song already identified with “Idol” as the going away song season five. Kris Allen could do this one.)
“Crazy” Gnarls Barkley (The song couldn’t get cleared last season. Maybe Danger Mouse might change his mind this time around cos any of the guys could do this one.)
“Sexyback” Justin Timberlake (I dare you, Matt Giraud. Or Anoop.)
“How To Save A Life” Fray (Right up Kris’ alley though Scott might be drawn to this.)
“Lips of an Angel” – Hinder (Has an overwrought quality that fits Adam well)
“Irreplaceable” – Beyonce (Lil Rounds could pull this one off. Stay away, Allison and Megan!)
“Makes Me Wonder” Maroon 5 (Matt Giraud, this one’s yours)
“Hey There Delilah” Plain White T’s (already burned to a crisp in Hollywood. Avoid!)
“Apologize” OneRepublic w/ Timbaland (Includes piano. Scott, this one’s yours.)
“No One” Alicia Keys (Lil Rounds will more likely pick this one)
“Hallelujah” Jeff Buckley (Jason Castro already did this. I wouldn’t touch it. In fact, he’s the reason why this went No. 1)
“Bleeding Love” Leona Love (Allison could pull this one off though Lil Rounds could do it justice. She in fact needs to do it justice after a couple of tepid weeks.)
“Take a Bow” – Rihanna (Megan should sing this as a symbolic tune.)
“So What” Pink (Allison could rock this one out of the park)
Both David Cook and David Archuleta had no. 1 songs but I wouldn’t dare do a song by either of them. Too soon!
Some folks think a creative singer could do a stripped down “Umbrella” for full effect. We’ll see.

-Danny Gokey’s grandfather passed and he spent a few days away from the “Idol” bubble but will be back in time to perform tonight.

-David Cook also cancelled a couple of shows for personal reasons, unstated.

-And Idol won best reality show on the Kids Choice Awards Saturday on Nickelodeon. David Archuleta and Paula Abdul came up to thank the Nickelodeon voters. They did NOT get slimed. If only Simon had been there…

Well good Morning Bloggers. Hope ya’ll had a great night.

Today’s Quote: “Life is a wretched gray Saturday, but it has to be lived through.”

Rodney, out of all the songs you mentioned, I have never heard of any of them. Don’t know what that makes me (old fogey), so it doesn’t matter whom does what tonight. I’ll just sit back, watch and listen.

My deepest condolences and sympathy to Danny and his family.

Wow, First…and first time commenting on this blog. Thanks Rodney for this blog and thanks everyone for your funny and witty comments. I really enjoy reading this blog especially during the AI season. I am always telling my co-workers about it. Mike S. you are the best! I consider you the “authority” and your comments are always interesting and right on.

Should be interesting show tonight. Both my kids and I are big fans and enjoy watching it together. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Well, this is one week that I will definitely not watch the show, but fast-forward thru the dvr recording. I don’t know even one of these songs, so have NO interest in seeing everybody do their thang. I need to start cleaning the house anyway for a friend’s 50th b’day party this weekend, so I’ll plug in the ipod and clean away! Then, when Joe gets home, we’ll sit down & see who did what.
So far, I’m a HUGE Adam Lambert fan with Allison a real real close 2nd. Adam reminds me of Freddy Mercury of Queen – extremely versitile, can sing almost anything from rock anthem to soulful ballads. Allison channels a little bit of Janis, Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Ethridge – what a combo for such a young girl! Kris A has a James Taylor quality about him – and that really came thru last week – but he didn’t do a tribute to JT on the song – just had that kinda sweet baby James thing going. Poor Scott M – he just doesn’t have the voice or the presence (see Stevie Wonder for “presence”) to compete w/ the other kids. Danny was a front-runner, but I think he’s falling back in the pack as some of the other kids catch up. And Lil, well, she sure showed her ‘tude last week when the judges dared to criticize her – did y’all notice her face???? WOW!
We’ll see what happens tonite – could be great or a total trainwreck and I’m voting for the trainwreck! Sorry…..

Morning!

Welcome to Idolblogwatcher! We expect to hear from you now that you’ve taken the plunge. And it’s so nice that Mike has a fan considering the number of drive-bys he gets! :-)

I think You’re Beautiful would be perfect for Adam since he already has a terrific falsetto…however, since he showcased his ability to do quiet and lovely last week, I think he’ll go loud and boisterous this week. I’m sure I’ll recognize some of the songs when I hear them. whether or not I’ll like them is a whole other matter.

Good Morning All!! Tonight could be interesting. When they sing songs we know, we are always trying to compare them to the original. If they sing songs you don’t know, you can concentrate on how good or bad they do without comparing them to the original.

Question for everyone. A couple weeks ago, someone mentioned a website you could go to and listen to music where you set your “own radio station”. Could someone post that link again. I left my iPod at home today and need something to get me through this day.

Thanks Nana and Deirdre for the welcome. Yes I finally decided to take the plunge after years of reading the blog. I think it’s gonna be fun. I told my daughter this morning, “guess what I blogged about AI!” Her first comment was, what did you say…as not to be embarassing, or course.

She knows most of downloaded songs, with one of her favorites being Dirty Little Secret. I’m familiar with about 9 of the 17.

Here’s something interesting for y’all to ponder. According to Joe’s Place, a poster named Rachel loves leaving riddles about song spoilers. And the always come true. Here’s her riddles this week:

“Matt stays behond the piano this week with this international hit. But is it too late?”
”Adam is also taking his turn at an international hit. He just hopes you don’t think he’s going insane.”
“The old Anoop is back, hoping to leave the ladies all hot and bothered.”

Morning everyone, and may I add my welcome to Idolblogwatcher, too. Appreciate your comments! D, I agree that Adam won’t go soft and lovely this week and will probably rock the house with something. Most of the songs Rodney listed I have heard on the radio or read about in Rolling Stone magazine (yes, this old lady has a subscription). I hope nobody does Sexyback, Rodney, because it is mostly spoken and not sung. I don’t think it would showcase anyone’s talent, IMO. I am looking forward to it, for as someone said yesterday, believe it was JT, these are young folks and it may be to their advantage to sing something contemporary for a change. I just think they need to be careful and not go too far with it. Something familiar is always better, and I think that is why they have relied on the old “tried and true” song lists before.

I’m curious how some of you people think you can have an intelligent opinion about Idol performances NOT knowing anything at all about the music? Honestly, the songs Rodney mentioned are some of the most overplayed, overhyped and worn out tunes imaginable. If the contestants choose even half of them, I’ll be looking for a window to jump out of. I’ve been following this blog for several weeks now and sometimes I just have to shake my head.

OK, speculation on the riddles is flying through the blogosphere.

Adam: Either Disturbia or Crazy

Anoop: Sexyback

Matt: Apologize

offkey, sometimes we all have to shake our heads. That being said, the theme is top downloads…so my guess is that all the songs are “overplayed, over-hyped and worn out.”

And yes, many of us here on the blog are like fish out of water when it comes to this theme…but, we look the songs up on Youtube, we get other peoples’ opinions and we judge the contestants based on how well they perform rather than which song they chose(unless it turns out to be the WRONG song for them, then we enjoy ranting about it)

Blogs are supposed to be fun and not a place for exact sciences, for crying out loud. Opinions do not necessarily have to be founded in hard-core research, but are mainly knee-jerk reactions. Most people know what they like or do not like, and it is really not based upon anything-whimsical, ephemeral, but mostly always fun!

I have potentially very damaging news regarding Danny Gokey, who I have been a supporter of up to this point. Yesterday I was stuck on hold and the song being played was “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You”, by Michael Bolton. After retching, writhing and convulsing from his whining and screeching vocals for what seemed like an eternity, I realized that his voice was remarkably similar to Gokey.

Sorry to have to bring this bit of tragic news to everyone’s attention, but if we are on the verge of creating another insufferable Boltonesque artist I think we need to find out now and take all appropriate and necessary action to insure this does not happen.

One good thing about this blog is that we all have our opinions, and while we may not always agree, we do express them and are considerate of the opinions of others. To do a personal attack on here is just plain crazy, immature and very disrespectful. In reading JT’s post(s), I don’t believe that he was doing a personal attack of any one person.
