3/31: American Idol recap, top 9, top downloads theme: Ballad overload

Clearly, the theme “top downloads” simply mean “relatively recent songs.” Or not if you asked Scott, Kris and Adam. Ultimately, the theme this week was a free for all. Too many ballads for my taste. And technically, only one current song, courtesy of Matt, who I thought was better than what the judges said.

Who won the night: Kris Allen

Who disappointed (again): Lil Rounds

Who will be in the bottom three: Anoop, Megan, Lil Rounds

Who will go home: Megan

Who should go home; Scott (my opinion)

My ranking of the top 9: 1-Kris 2- Adam 3- Danny 4- Matt 5- Allison 6- Megan 7 – Anoop 8 – Lil Rounds 9- Scott

Who should go home tonight?

First up: Anoop Desai (”Caught Up” Usher). I felt like he is just play acting. I don’t feel like this is genuine or terribly unique. Good vocals, though. Randy: “Usher is more the dancer singer. Vocally it was cool. Not sure it was the right song for you.” Kara: “When you pick Usher, you have to go up and do riffs and do crazy stuff. You played it safe and did what he did.” Paula: “I liked your playful side… I’d work more on the stage presence.” Simon: “It was a complete and utter mess… you came over as a wannabe. I didn’t see any originality… it actually gave me a headache.”

Up second: Megan Joy Corkrey’s in the crappy second spot. She goes for a cool Lauryn Hill/Bob Marley song “Turn Your Lights Down Low.” The song worked perfectly for her. I enjoyed it but it shows her limitations as a singer. Kara: “I think you’re in trouble. It’s not the song choice for you. I want to hear Adele. That part of your register was getting irritating.” Paula: “At this stage of the competition, you need to take us by surprise.” Simon: “The song was boring. It was indulgent. It was monotonous. All the things we liked about you are disappearing.” Randy: “It was like watching paint dry.”

Who WILL go home after free-for-all night?

Up third: Danny Gokey (Rascal Flatt’s “What Hurts the Most”) – I am not a Rascal Flatts fan and this song bores me. Danny does an okay job with it. It’s quite heartfelt and I like his voice better than Gary LeVox’s. Paula: “You leave me wanting more.” Simon: “This week, I thought it was your best performance.” (He even applauded!) Randy: “You definitely brought it crazy with the vocals.” Kara: “You moved everyone in this room emotionally.”

Up fourth: Allison Iraheta (No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”) – She whips out the guitar and the car wash to get that punkish hair style. This is another ballad I don’t particularly like. It started a bit slow, but I really enjoyed the ending. Randy: “You were a little ahead of the beat… I like you played the guitar. What are you wearing?” Kara: “It was a little distracting. It felt forced.” Paula: “I’m glad you brought your ax out… your vocal prowess rivals those twice your age.” Simon: “It was like something out of the Addams family. [the outfit, that is.] It was like a slightly precocious daughter trying to dress like a rock star.”

Up fifth: Scott MacIntyre (”Just the Way You Are” Billy Joel) – Okay, forget about “relatively recent songs.” This one came out 30 years ago when nobody knew what a download was. Huh? But it definitely fits the schmaltzy Scott. What’s with all these ballads. Snooze city! Kara: “A moving performance, coming from an honest place. And I love the new look. [No more pink pants!]” Paula: “blah blah blah.” Simon: “Your best performance by a country mile. It’s a different Scott. We have the Ryan Seacrest hair.” Randy: “One of the best of the night Scottie.”

Up sixth: Matt Giraud (”You Found Me” The Fray) – He’s the first performer to actually go truly current. And I immediately thought this was a good song for him. He adds a rocker edge to a very delicate song. Having the crowd surround me is kind of cool as he works the keyboard. I didn’t like the falsetto near the end but overall, that was hot, dude! Paula: “I appreciate you went for a contemporary song… it became more of a soundalike.” Simon: “I didn’t get it at all. It felt very put on. Not a good commercial song.” Randy: “Wrong song for you. You’re more One Republic than the Fray. This is not you. You’re not a rock type of singer. You have to let that flavor out.” Kara: “You keep going between the rock and R&B sides of pop. You have to commit for us to see what record you’re going to make… you don’t deserve to go home.”

Up seventh: Lil Rounds (Celine Dion’s “I Surrender”) – Oh, no! Not another crappy ballad. What the heck is going on tonight? That hair style is not flattering. Lil looks about 45 years old. At least this song is in her wheelhouse. While she has great vocals, they aren’t quite as good as Celine, or Jennifer Hudson. Randy: “You sang it really really well… young it up a little bit.” Kara: “I was surprised, too. When you go up there, it’s effortless. We got a glimpse from what we saw in the beginning.” Paula: “I don’t want to see adult contemporary Lil Rounds.” Simon: “This was for me you singing to stay in the competition with a safe song. I found it quite similar to a wedding performance.”

Up eighth: Adam Lambert (”Play That Funky Music” Wild Cherry) – Thank you for giving us something upbeat. He decided to keep his Elvis-like look another week. Very indulgent but at least he woke me up. Paula: “True genius does not fulfill expectations, blah blah blah.” Simon: “That was very brave. At least we get rid of this karaoke nonsense tonight. It was original.” Randy: “You worked it out.” Kara: “It was like Studio 57 up in here.”

Now on to the pimp spot: Kris Allen! (”Ain’t No Sunshine” Bill Withers) – Kris dumped the guitar and opted for the keyboard. He earned his pimp spottery tonight. He’s really bringing it week in, week out. Randy: “You’ve been slaying it dude. So creative, so cool.” Kara: “I got three words for you: That is artistry. Whoo! [At least she got the word count right]. Paula: “You took a 30 year old song and made it seem like we’ve heard it the first time.” Simon: “When we spoke last week showing some confidence. That’s what you brought tonight. It was very clever, very cool. I like you behind the keyboard.”

Actually it is a 1 hour and at least 5 minute show. Gotta have extra time for Paula’s clueless pearls of wisdom, a few of Randy’s “Dog, I don’t no… I gotta agree with my boy Simon…’cause for me it was just alright vocally, but I wasn’t feelin’ it from you, dog, you know what I’m sayin’? You gotta just bring it”, followed by Kara’s flirting with the boys, and Simon acting bored and annoyed to be on the show, commenting with some inane remarks about posture, clothes, and hairdos.

These are the spoilers we have so far…apparently the dress rehearsal is running way behind because of technical difficulties.
