3/25: Motown musings, Ace Young interview, Jennifer Hudson “secret” taping(UPDATED)

We have an extra day to kill. This is normally performance day but Obama’s press conference at 8 p.m. pushed everything a day back.

So let’s muse on the theme: “Idol” loves Motown. So why not mine that field again? We’ve heard a fairly endless number of takes on Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin already but the Motown song list is fairly extensive.

I’d expect Matt Giraud should do well, as well as Lil Rounds. Danny Gokey shouldn’t have a problem. Adam Lambert? Who knows!

Who do you think will struggle the most tonight with Motown?

Earlier this month, I spoke with Ace Young in advance of his Fox Reality Show “Idol Extra” starting Thursday. He will co-host with Jillian Reynolds.

He wouldn’t provide any real opinions about the contestants so we focused on his career. He said he was too busy traveling at the point to get a gauge on the top 13 though he liked Adam Lambert during the auditions. His songwriting success so far has superseded his own career. Recall he got an Oscar nomination cowriting Daughtry’s “It’s Not Over.” He told me he wrote another No. 1 single — in Sweden. And he did a cover of “Baker’s Street” which charted on the jazz charts.

He travelled to see several past Idols while they were on tour such as Bo Bice and those stories will air on “Idol Extra” in the coming weeks.

Fox Reality invited him to host before but he had been too busy. “The fact we’re going live right after ‘Idol’ excites me,” he said. “We’ll be the first interviewers of the person who gets eliminated.”

His take on Kara DioGuardi: “I think Kara’s amazing. I love that they’ve mixed it up. I think that’s good.”

The show itself, he said, will allow him to “hang out with everybody again. And to do something with Jillian.”

-The New York Post reports that Jennifer Hudson will tape a performance after the performance show Wednesday and air on a future date. Ruben Studdard will perform as well and his will air on Thursday.

-Simon Cowell, flattered by Obama’s namedropping last Thursday on Leno, said he hopes to get the president to show up on the show.

Since almost everyone did well with Country, I think everyone will do well with Motown. Although I can see Michael once again struggling, but he seems to do that every week. No comment on Ace… yet.

Here is a list of the top 100 Motown hits. Don’t know in whose opinion, but it is a list anyway. Probably based on sales.

I’m sorry, but that song has Adam written all over it. He can turn “Let’s get it on” into a little Broadway song and dance number, with of course an emo feel.

I bet Adam will do this one by Mary Wells.

Nothing you could say
Can tear me away from my guy
Nothing you could do
‘Cause I’m stuck like glue to my guy

I’m stickin’ to my guy
Like a stamp to a letter
Like the birds of a feather
We stick together
I’m tellin’ you from the start
I can’t be torn apart from my guy

Nothing you can do
Could make me untrue to my guy
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie to my guy

I gave my guy my word of honor
To be faithful and I’m gonna
You best be believing
I won’t be deceiving my guy

As a matter of opinion I think he’s tops
My opinion is he’s the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste to be exact
He’s my ideal as a matter of fact

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy
(Tell me more)
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

Funny you should say that Lara. I was looking the list over and here are my picks for the Idols:

Matt: Three Times a Lady – Commodores
Megan Joy: My Guy – Mary Wells
Anoop: Hello – Lionel Richie
Scott: You are the Sunshine of my Life – Stevei Wonder
Allison: Ain’t no Mountain High Enough – Marvin Gaye
Adam: Lets Get it On – Marvin Gaye
Lil: Upside Down (Inside Out) Diana Ross
Kris: This Old Heart of Mine (is weak for you)- Isley Brothers
Danny: What Becomes of the Brokenhearted – Jimmy Ruffin
Michael: I Can’t help Myself (sugar pie honey bunch) – Four Tops

Y’ll agree or disagree? Feel free to change and pick your thoughts on the songs.

Happy Birthday Lara!!!!

Bulldama’s about to stop in to tell us that those songs aren’t Motown but…since the theme is 50 years of Motown, I think the choices will come from the Motown label rather than the period in history when Motown was in Detroit.

Adam’s songs? You guys are evil AND hilarious!

KPH that’s a good point regarding Michael. I also think that Megan will do well, simply because she will turn the song into her style. Granted I don’t like that style, but somebody does. Maybe the people we need to worry about are the ones who won’t make the song their own… Lil?

*whew* time to take a breath here…. Alexis should have been saved IMHO. I know it was early, but she should NOT have been bumped from the tour, and if they had to use the save early, so be it. If she failed two weeks in a row, then yeah, she blew it but….

my other thought is that every contestant should have a “song in their pocket” prepared so that IF they are lowest in voting, they can sing something OTHER than what got them such low votes to coax the judges into keeping them amount. I mean — Alexis didn’t stand a CHANCE singing Jolene again!!! bah, humbug!!

linny, thats what harriett, Deirdre and I said last week. Just to compare shows, on DWTS, their dance off allows the dancers to CHOOSE the best of their dances already performed. All the couples have decided on which dance they will do in case they are in the dance off. So you know they will choose their best one, which is what they should be allowed to do. Now why can’t AL follow the lead of DWTS? Let all contestants choose their best song performance and allow them to sing that one for the sing off. Now that makes really good sense to me. And,,,,, the fact that are singing for their life while they have to watch the judges huddle to decide their fate is plain crude and cruel. No one would be able to pull if off flawlessly, unless you have nerves of steel. I just plain don’t like this new addition! :(

KPH

He was tremendous last week, and I look for this smoothe, soulful guy to shine again tomorrow night. (There’s probably not a a genre’ out there that this guy can’t tackle).

Good Morning Bloggers! :)

Today’s Quote: “The most difficult lessons are those with the greatest rewards.”

Well, how many watched the Prez last night? Grabbed a book and read until DWTS came on, then read some more until 1:30 this morning. Couldn’t believe that the apple guy, Steve, was saved and didn’t go home. What a crock. What is America thinking? Was sad to see Max leave but not his partner, Denise Richards.

everett, I did see on Entertainment Tonight that there is a rumor that JHud is going to be on Idol. They did confirm that it’s only a rumor. We’ll see. Alot of times rumors are in fact real.

Nana, mj seems to be pretty sure that, at some point, JHud WILL be on Idol. According to mj:

Jennifer Hudson will be taping her Idol appearance in front of a live audience after Wednesday’s performance show, to be broadcast at a later, unspecified date.

Don’t forget, that ticket voucher also mentioned that Ruben Studdard will also tape on Wednesday, with Smokey Robinson, Joss Stone and Stevie Wonder set to tape on Thursday.

Ruben and Smokey Robinson will be part of the Thursday Motown at 50 themed results show. No official word on when Stevie Wonder and Joss Stone’s appearances will be aired…
