We have an extra day to kill. This is normally performance day but Obama’s press conference at 8 p.m. pushed everything a day back.
So let’s muse on the theme: “Idol” loves Motown. So why not mine that field again? We’ve heard a fairly endless number of takes on Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin already but the Motown song list is fairly extensive.
I’d expect Matt Giraud should do well, as well as Lil Rounds. Danny Gokey shouldn’t have a problem. Adam Lambert? Who knows!
Earlier this month, I spoke with Ace Young in advance of his Fox Reality Show “Idol Extra” starting Thursday. He will co-host with Jillian Reynolds.
He wouldn’t provide any real opinions about the contestants so we focused on his career. He said he was too busy traveling at the point to get a gauge on the top 13 though he liked Adam Lambert during the auditions. His songwriting success so far has superseded his own career. Recall he got an Oscar nomination cowriting Daughtry’s “It’s Not Over.” He told me he wrote another No. 1 single — in Sweden. And he did a cover of “Baker’s Street” which charted on the jazz charts.
He travelled to see several past Idols while they were on tour such as Bo Bice and those stories will air on “Idol Extra” in the coming weeks.
Fox Reality invited him to host before but he had been too busy. “The fact we’re going live right after ‘Idol’ excites me,” he said. “We’ll be the first interviewers of the person who gets eliminated.”
His take on Kara DioGuardi: “I think Kara’s amazing. I love that they’ve mixed it up. I think that’s good.”
The show itself, he said, will allow him to “hang out with everybody again. And to do something with Jillian.”
-The New York Post reports that Jennifer Hudson will tape a performance after the performance show Wednesday and air on a future date. Ruben Studdard will perform as well and his will air on Thursday.
-Simon Cowell, flattered by Obama’s namedropping last Thursday on Leno, said he hopes to get the president to show up on the show.
