3/18: Mid-day report with Kelly Clarkson’s first week sales, Idol ratings down, Idol trading cards, Megan Joy Corkrey poll

Last week, I predicted Kelly Clarkson would sell 250,000 copies in her first week of “All I Ever Wanted.” Final tally: 254,671, 70,000 digitally. I was close! It’s comparable to her last album “My December,” which sold 291,000 its first week. In this day and age when CD sales are dropping fast, that’s not bad.

Her single “My Life Would Suck Without You,” I figured, would go No. 1 on the top 40 charts but now I’m not so sure now. Flo Rida’s “Right Round” leapfrogged it so it may end up peaking at No. 3. All-American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell” is also hot. That’s airplay only. The song did go No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 1.2 million-plus in download sales.

Taylor Hicks’ new independently released album sold just 9,000. The first week of his first post-”Idol” album? 298,000. So that’s a 97% dropoff. Ouch. Speaking of problematic, TMZ had some fun IDing low ticket demand for a Hicks concert.

(Women only) What do you think of Megan Joy Corkrey?

-As usual, “Idol” ratings are way down from last year. Early numbers from last night: 21.5 million, hurt by major competition from “Dancing With the Stars” and “Biggest Loser.” That’s a 22% dropoff from a year ago. Ugly! “Dancing With the Stars,” in comparison, drew 21.1 million viewers Monday night for the performance show, albeit its audience on average is much older. The results show, up against “Idol,” drew 12.3 million while the second hour of “Biggest Loser” average 8.5 million. That’s a lot of audience split among three big reality shows.

-And I’m surprised nobody has thought of this sooner. “Idol” trading cards. But do kids in this day and age even bother collecting/trading ANY cards at all? Don’t they just collect friends on Facebook?

I’m sorry guys. I don’t like Meagan at all. I just don’t enjoy listening to her, much less watching her. Sure, shes cute and good looking, but I know better places to see good lucks then AI. I’m here for the singing, and that is something that she just can’t do. Michael, Meagan, Anoop (unless he keep performing like last night) are the bottom of our bunch.

Seems like ratings are relative. When compared to last season, ratings are down but when compared to all competing shows, Idol is still top dog…which suggests to me that ratings are down across the board for network shows.

Mike S- Do you know how they get these figures (always wondered), and does anyone else find it strange that more people watch the end of these shows than the beginning?

I’ve never really been a fan of Megan’s. In my mind I kind of lump her in with the other mediocre yet over hyped contestants like Scott and Adam. Talented enough to make it here, but the time to leave is near.

VofR…the Nielsen ratings system still is top dog but times are changing and tv needs to find a new way to rate the popularity of its shows. DVRs plus On Demand plus internet viewing are all becoming very popular and many people are not watching a show during its original airtime but later, when it’s more convenient for them.

The different numbers from beginning to end of a show have more to do with families not being ready to sit down and watch tv early in the evening. They join the show in progress as their other activities (dinner, kid’s baseball games, homework) get done.

That’s why folks who perform earlier are at an instant disadvantage. I think being first is not the worst. I surmise being second is even worse because being first has some notable impressions on somebody. But with 11 performers, the 2nd person will be easily forgotten. Thus, Allison is in the bottom three of dialidol.com despite a GREAT performance. Criminal!

I have a problem that’s completely unrelated to Idol…so, if you don’t have any suggestions, just keep on chatting about the show.

For about 10 years we’ve had a small birdhouse on our fence. Every year in the spring bluebirds make a nest and have babies…nobody bothers anybody! THIS year, the bluebirds are attacking anything glass. My windows, the car windows, etc. I know it’s because they see their reflection and think it’s another bird trying to take their nest BUT…this has never happened before. There’ s bird poop EVERYWHERE! I’ve tried hanging up stuff that moves with the breeze and it stops them until they get used to it then they’re back at my windows again. Has anyone else had this happen?

D my neighbor has the same pair of Orchard Orials (sp?) that arrive every spring and do the same thing. Last year he said he would have to shoot them. I told him “yeah right like you could kill anything” and he said I know right. Aluminum pie pans seem to do the best of the shiney spinny things as I have used them to keep Cardinals from stealing my snow peas when they come in and if you hang some faily close they make some noise too. But they shouldn’t scare them from the nest. I love to hear baby birds.

D. I once had a problem with 2 cardinals flying into my sliding glass door at the mountain cabin. They actually were leaving red smears from their beaks on the glass they were hitting it so hard. One day I timed it just right and opened the door and one flew in the cabin. The second one continued to do it so I tried my trick again and presto 2 cardinals flying around in the cabin. That afternoon I got my fish net with a long handle and caught both of them and put them in a large box. I drove them about 15 miles from the cabin and released them and they seemed to be ok other than a little stressed and they havent been back. This happened during the spring and they were both males so I figured they were trying to run off the competition.

Deirdre

Very funny, Mike! Hubby has already made that suggestion! Specially after he saw the mess on the side of his truck. Wild Birds Unlimited said it’s very common…he suggested the pie plates…thanks Sarah B…or streamers hanging from the windows..anything that will distract them from their reflection. It’s like they have to poop EVERY time they hit a window…I’ve never seen anything like it!

Voice of Reason

March 18th, 2009

Mike S- I agree with your idea, yet, since Dierdre doesn’t sound like she hunts often I recommend twelve gauge with bird shot. It will give her more “margin of error” on the shot yet may require more widespread use of the leaf blower.

Simon has named Adam Lambert as his favorite guy and Lil Rounds as his favorite gal in the competition. JTesla

4:53 pm

You know if it was for free, I would go see him. One thing that I said back in season 5, is that if I were at a bar and Taylor Hicks started doing his thing it would be very entertaining. With 9,000 sold I can see why Idol isn’t using him in too many of their promotions.

Hey, quick question: what do you think of Simon using “precocious” and meaning it in a good way? I’ve always heard it used in a negative fashion, but looking at the official definition it shouldn’t have that negative connotation.

Deirdre

March 18th, 2009
4:58 pm

I think the English language is tricky. there are all sorts or words that have one real meaning and one or more connotations. One of the latest words to develop a negative connotation which shouldn’t be negative at all is “elite”. Being elite should be a good thing but that’s not really true anymore.

Plus, because Simon is British, the same word can mean different things to him than it does to Americans. Weird language.

Neg must make a terrible confession to all his loyal followers: I have listened to Taylor’s new tune, “Right is Right”, and actually liked it very much. Very soulful AC without the gratuitous hollering for effect. Gentle and nice. One criticism: they have a small mixing problem where his voice transitions to chorus a bit to abruptly, but it’s minor, and I really enjoyed listening to it.

Neg…you’re very brave! I like Taylor, enjoy his singing most of the time, enjoyed his antics during Idol even more….never saw him in a venue larger than my local watering hole. Seems like that might be where he’ll stay and…I think he might be happy there.

Negbeaters

March 18th, 2009
5:23 pm

JT, I was never a fan of Hicks, even during his run on Idol (which I watched sparingly). This is the first time he came out with something I actually liked. He seems to have matured into a jazz/blues/soul fusion that really suits him. Sadly, it may be too late for him to get credibility back after his awful post-idol career humiliations.

Negbeaters

March 18th, 2009

D, people love comebacks, so who knows? I think Taylor, Ruben and Fantasia should go on the “Idol Busts Out!” tour. Make it light, fun and semi-parody. They could probably sell out some minor venues packaged together as a curiosity. Hell, if they should have a little fun with their plight and see what happens! Hey, it worked for William Shatner.

Agent Neg is now officially taking calls.

IF I can interject some reality into the Taylor bashing for a few minutes — his new album is on an INDEPENDENT LABEL and is not being widely promoted. Also it is available for download or online order only. Taylor is currently touring with Grease and is not actively promoting his album a whole lot. So it is very disengenuous to compare it to Kelly’s major label, hyped to pieces with multiple television appearances album.

Also, I wish I was such a failure to have a PLATINUM ALBUM (and YES his first album was certified platinum even though the numbers say only 800,000 sales — not sure how but it is certified)

Finally, The new album is excellent, you should give it a listen, you all might be surprised like Neg.

Looks like next week is definately Motown week. Smokey Robinson and barry Gordy jr will be the mentors.

From the Detroit Free Press:
The top-rated television show will encamp at the Motown Historical Museum on Thursday, the Free Press has learned, shooting footage for a Motown-themed episode next week.

In Motown’s old Studio A, Detroit icons Berry Gordy Jr. and Smokey Robinson will mentor the show’s 10 finalists through a series of Hitsville song selections, sources said. The taped segments will air next week before the contestants perform the songs live on the show’s Los Angeles stage.

Museum officials declined to comment. An “American Idol” spokeswoman would not confirm plans for a Detroit shoot.

I’ll give it a listen sometime, and I’ll probably like it. However, I reserve the right to continue the Taylor bashing. It’s all I have left. Wait, I still have Jason Castro, Brooke White, Melinda “Ice cream” Doolittle, and Ace, but let’s face it Taylor is the best target of all.

Mike: Thanks for the dirt on next weeks show.
