3/16: Country spoilers, Kelly Clarkson on SNL, Clay Aiken on “30 Rock,” Christians in the top 11

Vote For the Worst has linked to a leaked list of songs the Idol contestants can choose from to sing this week for country week based on artists who are now Grand Ol Opry members. I know that they can choose songs outside this list but there is always the risk the song won’t get cleared. The list includes the some obvious suspect artists such as Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Hank Williams, George Jones, Martina McBride, Randy Travis and Patsy Cline. Oh, and the Georgians or former Georgians? Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Travis Tritt. I won’t list it but you can find the list at Vote for the Worst. And here are all the living Opry members.

Which country song should Anoop sing which would get him voted off this week?

And though there are no obvious country artists among the top 11, there are at least six who are active in their church among the 11: Michael Sarver Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud and Scott MacIntyre. (Not Adam Lambert.) MTV does a nice job writing about this topic:

“I think that Christians probably watch the show all the time but maybe don’t admit it. But this gives them someone to root for in this cast who is not just talented but also follows their faith, and people want to get behind contestants who align with their views,” said Joanne Brokaw, who writes the Gospel Soundcheck” column for the spirituality Web site BeliefNet.com. “Christian music has always had this cheesy label attached to it, and this shows that a Christian singer can have artistic integrity and they are people who can really sing.”

-Clay Aiken is set to make a cameo on an upcoming episode of “30 Rock,” according to the New York Daily News. Let’s hope he has some fun interaction with soundalike and former Conyers boy Jack McBrayer! He’s now out and able to present at the GLAAD awards, too, March 28. He will present an award to gay-friendly icon Tyra Banks.

Kelly Clarkson performed “My Life Would Suck Without You” on SNL Saturday. She sounds better than she did this past Wednesday on “Idol” but her voice is still not at 100%. Hey–80% of Clarkson is still better than 99% of anybody else!

Christians may root for fellow Christians, but it doesn’t equal votes. Chris Sligh would have gone a lot further if that were the case.

I hadn’t noticed before that Kelly recruited her bassist from Motley Crue’s Smoking in the boys room video. Interesting. Thanks for the video and other info!

Good Morning Bloggers!

Today’s Quote: “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it isn’t going away.”

Back at work today. Feeling much better, but not completely well. Thanks for all the well wishes and concerns. Ya’ll mean alot to me and I appreciate all of you.

I have a mountain of work piled on my desk, so I doubt if I will be able to post much today, but will try to peek to see what is going on.

I have made a decision for this week, if any of the guys has the cajones to actually sing Honkytonk Badonkadonk, I will vote for them for the entire two hours even if they are a total trainwreck! Just for the sheer pleasure of seeing Simon tortured.

And if one of the girls (megan? Allison?) sings it, I will vote for them for 2 weeks!!!

And the ultimate challenge – if LIL sings it and shakes the heck outta the money maker, she gets my vote for the entire season. ROFL!!!!!

seriously though, I love country week for the sheer joy of watching Simon in misery for two hours. hehehehehehe

Nana’s back!!!!!!!!!! YEA!!!!!!! Nana, you have no idea how much everyone was worried about you!

Morning everyone!

I went to a Bridal Show yesterday with my future daughter-in-law and had the BEST time. Came home with a load of brochures. JT, I won’t even hint at what that sweet little redhead is going to cost you in about 20 years! :-)

Re church people voting for church people. I don’t get it. Why do our entertainers have to have the same religion or values as us. I can appreciate someone’s talent without necessarily approving of their politics.

D, that is the main error of the author’s premise in that article. Christians don’t vote for christians as a bloc in this competition. While other blocs may vote thier cause or concern or whatever, Christians by thier very nature will be honest and vote for whomever they feel is the best singer/performer.

Deirdre

Mike, I thought that seemed kinda crazy.

Re voting for Lil the entire competition if she shakes her badonkadonk through the whole song….she’s liable to knock the stage off its platform if she does that!

LOL@D!!! Morning everyone! Nana, glad you are back and feeling better. You are loved!

I agree about the Christian thing. But, some old fashioned Christians–read my 88-year-old aunt–will vote for someone just because they profess the faith. She killed me during the election that way. She has been a yellow-dog Democrat her whole life, but when Mike Huckabee started talking Christianity, she almost changed parties. LOL!! But she is in the minority and certainly will not be watching Idol, much less voting!

Yes, D, I am sick of rain. I am looking out my window at the gloom and cold right now. I know we need it, but couldn’t it come in two-day increments and not last for four or five days in a row?

linny, thanks for the heads-up about your not being around for several days! We won’t worry about you now!

I watched Idol Wrap last night, and there was some interesting conversation about Adam and the gap between his polish (no, not his nail polish, either! and the rest of the group.

Mike S

March 16th, 2009
9:55 am

The bad thing is that Polish could work against him. Idol is known for loving contestants who improve throughout the season. Being completely stage ready can work against a contestant as they appear to be stagnant while others appear to be improving each week.

A couple cases in point – while a backup singer, Melinda knew how to perform on stage, while Jordin looked like a deer in the headlights early on. By the end, Jordin’s stage presence was vastly improved while people were saying “Melinda is the same every week”

Also Carrie and Bo, Bo had been performing for years and it showed. Meanwhile Carrie just stood at the mic like a statue. Yet by the end of the year, Carrie was working the stage, and people were saying Bo had not “improved”

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
9:56 am

Adam’s been a stage performer for a long time. Doesn’t mean he isn’t nervous and scared…just that he’s better at covering it up.

I drove up to the Cobb Galleria yesterday in pouring rain…thank goodness they have a parking deck! Drove home with it looking like it was finally clearing up…then here it comes again! :-(

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
9:58 am

I agree Mike…if the voters perceive a contestant as being too “seasoned”, they start to back away…almost like he/she doesn’t need my vote. However, that attitude has gotten a lot of worthy contestants dumped by the roadside.

Mike S

March 16th, 2009
10:02 am

Adam is also building an expectation level that is going to be tough to maintain week in week out. I think he is the one who is most likely to be hurt by the inevitable “off” week that every contestant has.

Danny, Lil, Alexis, etc will all be forgiven for “nerves’ or a bad song choice because they are not professionals.

The first week Adam does not deliver a knockout performance people will ripinto him.

harriett

March 16th, 2009
10:11 am

MikeS and D, your points were part of the interesting conversation I spoke of. They talked about how we see improvement in most contestants from week to week, whether it be in a “look” or in vocal performance and how Adam has nowhere to go from here. He will remain at the same level, probably.

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
10:19 am

He won’t if he changes it up every week. If he does the screaming rocker every week, he will lose a lot of fans. While they like that part of him, they will also want to see if he’s versatile.

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
10:20 am

It’s like Kelly Clarkson…she was great from the start. Then she showed us that she could really sing just about anything well. That’s when her lead was solidified.

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
10:24 am

Of course, Adam is also dealing with other issues. His over the top look, his orientation, will be factors when some people vote. I admire him because he hasn’t made an issue of any of it. He goes onstage, does his job, says he is who he is and either people will accept it or they won’t. He’s not looking for personal acceptance but for an acknowledgment of his talent..an so far, he’s getting it.

Rodney Ho

March 16th, 2009
10:29 am

Momentum helped get a lot of folks to the top 5. Vonzell Solomon improved steadily throughout the competition and was rewarded. Others were saddled with high early expectations like Lakisha Jones. Adam will be facing some tough expectation issues down the road, for sure. And I still feel like an idiot for predicting Anoop would make the top 2. He could be gone this week!

Deirdre

March 16th, 2009
10:32 am

Don’t feel bad, Rodney…Anoop had us all fooled for awhile!

harriett

March 16th, 2009
10:34 am

LOL@Rodney! Anoop made us all think he would do well, Rodney. I have been stunned at his seeming inability to take advantage of the good voice he has.

D, that’s why I said last week that if Adam does something completely unpredictable–believe Mike and I talked about a Vince Gill song–he may surprise a lot of people.

Also, on Idol Wrap they talked about Kris and Simon’s saying he would have kept the wife under wraps for a little longer. Gina and Kimberly said there was actually an audible gasp in the live audience when it was revealed Kris was married.

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

March 16th, 2009
10:42 am

apparently Kris had only been married a short time, also, there was a fleeting reference to “wife of 3 months” somewhere, not sure where i heard it or who said it — or wrote it — so there wasn’t a lot of “backstory” about a young MARRIED Kris (not that we got anything about him anyway, maybe that’s why!)

Has anyone heard of the “tea-parties”? apparently they are composed of large(thousands) of middle class people showing up all over the country to protest wasteful gov’t spending. It stems from the Congressional passing of the stimulus bill without even reading the frickin thing! It’s the latest internet movement. If I find a web site, I’ll let y’all know.

And returning to Idol…..Neg…if we’d all just learn to listen to you, we’d be better off. :-)

Tea parties make me laugh, they show a certain ignorance when it comes to history. Taxation without representation is different than taxation with representation. Also, let me dispel the myth that members of Congress actually sit down and read every piece of legislation they vote on. They don’t. Besides, many of them wouldn’t understand it even if they read it, so it’s better if they just go by the cliff notes. I’m not a supporter of either the recent stimulus or the stimulus from the last administration, but my issue with them is based on something else.

Maybe you shouldn’t have gotten me started.

Sarah…I think you might be right about Lil…as long as she finds ways to sing instead of scream, I think she’s very good.

I agree, D, about Kris and about Lil. I think the more we see Kris with his guitar the better we are going to like him. Still don’t think he is top 3 material, but he should last awhile; unless the marriage thing hurts him.

kelly&carriefan

Hey y’all…

Good for Kris to show and admit that he’s married. He’s a newlywed and he should be celebrating that. I understand the “availability” factor, but really. They have lives and I admire them being honest about it. Personally, I haven’t seen the appeal of Adam, but I admire that he’s said that he is who he is, etc.

So…Kelly on SNL. Um, well, I still love her, and I think that she sounded a bit better than on Idol. However, her stylist! What was she wearing?! The outfit was hideous. Oh, well, I will always cheer her on, regardless.

Whoever asked, (D?) add me to the list…rain, rain….go away! Oh, and whoever asked what I do. Well, I worked at an accounting firm, did admin work, have also worked for a telecom in marketing, sales. regulatory affairs, and have a BS in IS/IT. Jack-of-all-trades in a sense. :)

Hope y’all are having a great day…and Go, Dow, GO!

Country week is one of my faves, along with Motown week. I think Michael will do really good as well as Alexis, Kris and Matt. I agree that Alexis would be able to belt a Martina McBride song out of the park. And please, please, let no one do I will Always Love You!!! :( That song just needs to go away.

D, it was Nana that offered that opinion, but I second it. IMHO Dolly Parton is the only person in the whole wide world who should ever sing that song. Well, maybe that’s a little strong, but the whole mood of the song changed when Whitney made it into a power ballad. Now, every person with a big voice thinks they can shout it at the top of their lungs. I loved Dolly’s message of melancholy and quiet assurance as she wrote and sang it.

Thanks, Nana…and ain’t that the truth! :)

As far as GOO week, well, I definitely can’t wait to see who knocks this one out. I hope there’s not I Will Always Love You. Why am I seeing Danny doing Jesus, Take The Wheel? Kris could do well if he plays the guitar this week. I do think that Michael should do really well this week, but I gave up on the “should” this season because it seemed like that turned to “didn’t.”

Here are some tidbits I picked up today:

Ryan Seacrest was on Oprah and predicted that Danny Gokey will win when it is all said and done. He also said that he expected Adam, Allison, and Alexis to be in it to the end. Interestingly he did not mention Lil.

Carrie Underwood will be performing a Duet of “I Told You So” with Randy Travis on Wednesday night. Travis originally recorded the song, and Carrie covered it on her latest album.

The other performer Wednesday night will be Brad Paisley, who will sing his new single “Then”

Neg, even more than Honkytonk badonkadonk I would give my votes to anyone who sings the perfect country and western song :

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train.

And I’ll hang around as long as you will let me.
And I never minded standin’ in the rain.
No, you don’t have to call me darlin’, darlin’.
You never even called me,
Well I wonder why you don’t call me,
Why don’t you ever call me by my name?
(Oooooooooo.)

Mike, if anyone performs that song I will hammer my redial button with votes until it is worn to the nub.

Of course, I’d also do the same power voting for this Mac Davis classic (which also happens to be Neg’s theme song, naturally):

Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way.
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better loking each day.
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
but I’m doing the best that I can.

I used to have a girlfriend
but she just couldn’t compete
with all of these love starved women
who keep clamoring at my feet.
Well I prob’ly could find me another
but I guess they’re all in awe of me.
Who cares, I never get lonesome
cause I treasure my own company.

Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way,
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
but I’m doing the best that I can.

I guess you could say I’m a loner,
a cowboy outlaw tough and proud.
I could have lots of friends if I want to
but then I wouldn’t stand out from the crowd.
Some folks say that I’m egotistical.
Hell, I don’t even know what that means.
I guess it has something to do with the way that I
fill out my skin tight blue jeans.

Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way,
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
but I’m doing the best that I can.

Mike S and Neg, the Wise and Benevolent – you knock my socks off! You both always come up with the perfect song for a situation. I need to find “You Don’t Have to Call Me Darlin’, Darlin” on Amazon. Used to pay good money to play that song incessantly on the jukebox at a tavern in West Seattle – the locals hated it, I loved it. And my SO and I turned the aforementioned Jimmy Buffett song into a drinking game a long time ago…you know, chug your drink every time old Jimmy sang “Why don’t we get drunk…..”

Deirdre, Harriett and everyone else who mentioned rain – at least you have a prayer that the sun will pop through sometime soon. I live in Washington State, where rain is a constant. Last time I was in Atlanta, a cab driver asked me if it was true that it rains every day in Seattle. I assured him that on the rare occasions when the sun came out, people ran and hid from the giant ball of fire in the sky. Y’all must have heard the old joke: people in Seattle don’t tan, they rust.

Nana, so relieved and happy you are back. K&Cfan, you sound like a talented and skilled person. I’m sure another opportunity will open for you.

Good Morning and Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all you lil ole leprechauns :) !!!!!

Today’s Quote: “Wherever you go and whatever you do, may the luck of the Irish be with you.”

When Carrie first released her new single, “I Told You So”, Mike S and I said we would love to hear her and Randy Travis, who did the song originally, do it as a duet. Well tomorrow night, they are going to perform it together. I can’t wait for that performance. That will be one awesome duet.

I hope that all the song choices tonight aren’t ballards and that the contestants will select upbeat tempos as well. As we country music fans know, not all songs are slow, sad, and a cry in your beer. Since Adam is considered a rocker, I think he would do good with a Hank Williams Jr or Travis Tritt song. He might do well on T-R-O-U-B-L-E. As far as Scott, I keep seeing (no pun intended) him do one by Ronnie Milsap or even a country version of one by Ray Charles. Michael may fair well with doing George Strait, Tim McGraw or even Alan Jackson. Matt or Kris could both do a Hank Williams,SR. Alexis will hopefully choose one by Martina since she has the pipes to do one, but not Independence Day. I say this because this song has been used quite a bit on idol. Allison maybe do Wynonna. Meagan could possibly do Tammy Wynette without the funky body moves. Lil maybe a little Patsy Cline “Walking After Midnight” or “Crazy”. I know I’m probably way off on these, but just trying to give alittle insight.

Well, go have some green eggs and ham with a mug of green beer and hopefully you have on some green. You don’t want a pinch, now do ya?

I am ready for tonight’s show, just remember to judge the performances on thier merits tonight and not on what Simon Grouses. he is going to hate everything and everyone because he abhores country music.

I am so Psyched for tomorrow night- Carrie, Randy and Brad Paisley. Does it get any better. Well, OK, they could have had Hank Jr. on.

HEre are some great country lyrics to start the day.

I can see Michael Sarver singing this song, and the opening lines would be so Apropos.

Friends in Low Places – Garth Brooks

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one
You thought you’d see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said, honey, we may be through
But you’ll never hear me complain

‘Cause I’ve got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I’ll be okay
I’m not big on social graces
Think I’ll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I’ve got friends in low places

Well, I guess I was wrong
I just don’t belong
But then, I’ve been there before
Everything’s all right
I’ll just say goodnight
And I’ll show myself to the door
Hey, I didn’t mean
To cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
Well, I’ll be as high
As that ivory tower
That you’re livin’ in

‘Cause I’ve got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I’ll be okay
I’m not big on social graces
Think I’ll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I’ve got friends in low places

3rd Verse:
I guess I was wrong
I just don’t belong
But then, I’ve been there before
And everything is alright
I’ll just say goodnight
And I’ll show myself to the door
I didn’t mean to cause a big scene
Just wait ’til I finish this glass
Then sweet little lady
I’ll head back to the bar
And you can kiss my ass

In keeping with St. Paddy’s Day:

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer’s gone, and all the flowers are dying
’tis you, ’tis you must go and I must bide.

But come you back when summer’s in the meadow
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow
’tis I’ll be there in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You’ll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an “Ave” there for me.

And I shall hear, tho’ soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you’ll not fail to tell me that you love me
I simple sleep in peace until you come to me.

Okay now, dry your eyes. A sad but beautiful song. I love to hear Jim Reeves sing this.

Morning all! A grand and beautiful day it ’tis, here is downtown Columbia, SC. Top ‘o the mornin’ to ya! Sun is shining, and all’s right with the world–at least for now, anyway! Nana, I love to hear Eva Cassidy sing that song, too, and her singing of it is especially poignant, given her early death.

Lest we forget this must listen anthem…

The preacher man says it’s the end of time
And the Mississippi River she’s a goin’ dry
The interest is up and the Stock Markets down
And you only get mugged
If you go down town

I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids, and the dogs and me
I got a shotgun rifle and a 4-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain’t too many things these ole boys can’t do
We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can’t starve us out
And you cant makes us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We came from the West Virginia coalmines
And the Rocky Mountains and the and the western skies
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I’d send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can’t starve us out and you can’t make us run
Cause one-of- ‘em old boys raisin ole shotgun
And we say grace and we say Ma’am
And if you ain’t into that we don’t give a damn

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
