2/18: American Idol recap – Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver, Danny Gokey in

As expected, Alexis Grace and Danny Gokey make it in. And Michael Sarver snuck in ahead of Anoop dawg. Tatiana looks like she’s about to collapse as Gokey sings “Hero” again. (I can’t help but laugh maniacally at her as she cries and cries and cries and cries…)

Next week: the show is Wednesday and Thursday instead of Tuesday/Wednesday. Pres. Obama has scheduled his first “State of the Union” address next Tuesday at 9 p.m., which would be a major conflict with a two-hour “Idol.” “Bones” will have a special 8 p.m. showing that day.

The performers for the second round of semifinals: Megan Corkrey, Kris Allen. Mishayonna Henson, Matt Breitzke, Allison Iraheta, Matt Giraud, Jasmine Murray, Kai Kalama, Adam Lambert. Jeanine Vailes, Nick “Normund” Mitchell and Jesse Langseth. The favored kids are the two Matts, Jasmine and Adam, while Nick has had the most airtime. Kai, Megan and Jesse have had a little bit of time. Cannon fodder: Allison and Jeanine.

The group sing left me with very little impression beyond Stevie Wright holding a high note and Alexis Grace looking a bit like an extra from a Janet Jackson video circa 1990.

Who’s out first? Casey “wink like Sarah Palin” Carlson. No shock. I bet she had the fewest votes period. Then Stephen “Shouldn’t have done Michael Jackson” Fowler is out next. I bet he probably got the fewest votes among the guys. I don’t expect either to be back for the wild card.

First one in? Alexis Grace. She earned it. I know I wasn’t a huge fan but she was the best female and seems like a sweet gal. And here’s a switch. The winner gets to sing her song. (Her dad who resembles Meatloaf is crying!) And honestly, I did enjoy her the second time around.

Jackie Tohn and Ricky Braddy are up next. Both are goners. I’m sure Ricky will get a shot at the wild card. Jackie? Maybe based on her quirky personality.

Now it’s between Michael Sarver and Anoop Desai. Sarver is in. Dialidol fans rejoice! The site got it right. Don’t worry, Anoop fans. He will be back for the wild card show guaranteed.

Break time: former Buckhead denizens Carly Smithson & Michael Johns from last year are back! Carly gets to talk about losing her luggage (and weave). Michael gets to namedrop his new album out in May and single in a couple of weeks. Then they sing “The Letter.” Kind of random of a song to pick from the Box Tops. But the do it well.

Now they get rid of Ann Marie Boskovich, Stevie Wright and Brent Keith lickety split. They don’t even get to go to the center of the stage. Says a lot about their chances of making it to the wild card. Not.

The producers smartly pair off Danny Gokey with Tatiana Del Toro. As we all know (via dialidol.com), Danny is the man with the most votes. He is through, of course. But we know Tatiana will be back for the wild card. How could the producers resist one more day with her???

Well, that was the 3 I expected. Too bad for Ricky that it was the first time anyone saw him.

I actually thought that song worked well for a group.

Matt Giraud is the one I’ve liked best out of group 2. Adam has a good voice but he’s a tad over-dramatic for me, maybe he can tone it down a bit.

I made it safely through the multiple never ending storms unscathed, I can not say the same for my nerves. The tornado was spotted in the same area that was hit last March and May, around the University of West GA. The area is just a few miles to my south. My lights flickered during idol and I was starting to get upset, the lights stayed on, but the news people kept breaking into and interrupting LOST with weather news. The nerve! I heard that there was a 50 car pile up on I-20 not far from where I live ,that was weather related. I have not seen your umbrella Deirdre, I think it is probably in East Ga somewhere.

Tatiana getting eliminated from idol-PRICELESS!!!

Talk to everyone tomorrow and I hpoe you all made it through the storms ok!!!

That group song was better than ANY of the group songs from last year. They weren’t overpowered by the background singers. Oh and last years group just couldn’t sing together.

Tatiana, seriously… sleeves! If those arms were legs the celulite would keep her out of bikinis.

I would have liked Jackie over Sarver for the final 3…the competition needs an earthy, gritty, spunky female and she has talent. Tatiana had the best vocal among the ladies, but was just too annoying to continue. Danny was the class of this group and the voting reflected it. I am not sold on Alexis. She was straining badly to reach that song, though she does have a nice voice in general. Simon said she reminded him of Kelly at this stage, but he’s wrong. Kelly can sing circles around her, and Simon forgets that he did not like her until much later in the competition. He simply hates spunky, confident chicks…

Sorry for the flurry of posts, but the look Danny gave to Tatiana when they first went to center stage was priceless. He knows that she is the crazy. I have a feeling that some stories will be coming out regarding her backstage antics, Danny seems like too nice of a guy to give someone a “you are the crazy” look to just anyone.

GAgirl, you are perceptive and intelligent! Yeah, I agree that the user name, tnecvolfan2001, means Tennessee Volunteer Fan.

War Eagle, you aren’t even close to being the blog jerk.

I’ll arm-wrestle anyone for the right to be offended by some comments that go way past the arena of political correctness and veer dangerously close to vulgar. My observation is that war eagle doesn’t fall back on stupidity to make a worthy comment. I’m not a fan of gutter talk. And I’ll reserve the right to object to it anytime it appears. Yes, I’m a grown-up and, yes, I’ve heard it all before, but the fact remains that I AM a grown-up and well past the stage of juvenile vernacular.

I digress…had a lot of fun watching tonight’s show and I am so happy that I got to read all y’alls comments before we got to see it out here on the left-hand side.

American Idol is becoming more enjoyable and I’m happy with tonight’s results. I’m even happier that I get to read your comments at 6:15 my time. Isn’t it fun to have an emotional commitment in these singers already? I thought tonight’s results were correct. Really like Alexis and Danny and Michael.

I sincerely hope you all are safe…my younger son lives in Atlanta and I follow your news and weather faithfully. Bless you.

Well, good morning to each and every one of you.

Today’s Quote: “Worry looks back, Trouble looks ahead, and Faith looks up.”

Have to agree that War is not the jackazz on here. In the past couple threads, there have been things posted that shouldn’t have been and IMO was offensive. But I consider myself adult and mature enough to overlook some words, but I will say that one needs to be more considerate of other bloggers on here, after all, there are kids that read this blog as well as adults. So…………just be careful what you print.

Out of next week’s group, My favs are Matt H and Jasmine, as of now. That may change later, Will have to wait and see the performances Tuesday.

Harm: I heard who Jason picks and how he went about it. You will be surprise, because I was. If what I heard was true, that is.

After seeing next weeks group, that makes the third weeks group :
Females – Arianna Asfar, Felicia Barton, Kendall Beard, Kristin Mcnamara, Lil Rounds, Taylor Viafanua
Males – Alexander Wagner, Jorge Nunez, Ju’not Joyner, Scott McIntyre, Von Smith
Little Miss Priss Drama Queen Emeritus : Nate Marshall

That should be an interesting group as it contains some of the better females. Week Three might be the week of 2 girls, 1 guy.

We know Danny, Michael and Alexis are in. I will be wrong on a couple of these I am sure, but here is my best guesstimit for the others

Week 2 : Matt Giraud, Adam Lambert, Jasmine Murray
Week 3 : Lil Rounds, Kendall Beard, Scott McIntyre

Battling for the 3 wildcard picks : Ricky Braddy, Anoop Desai, Tatiana Del Toro, Matt Breitzke, Megan Corkrey, Kai Kalama, Kristen McNamara, Ju’not Joyner, Jorge Nunez.

They have not revealed how many will be eligible for the wildcard or how they will be picked, but I personally think AI will do it this way ; They seem to be stuck on THREE’s this year. So, we have 3 for sure in from each week. I will venture that THREE people from each week will be picked for the wildcard round, and ONE person from each group of three will get a wildcard entry into the finals.

Morning!

I took a walk around the neighborhood this morning and still can’t find my umbrella. Some people are missing shingles, there’s a few trees down and I saw one broken window from the enormous hail we had.

I’m in some agreement with everett and Nana on the “choice of expression” issue. The old blog had a filter that would change certain words to only suggest what the word is. I told Rodney about the incident Tuesday night and he was very surprised(like I said last night, I don’t think he reads the long winded posts, just scans them). He said he assumed that the filter was installed here. That being said, I encourage everybody to use the “report this comment” button if you think a particular word or description has gone too far. Those of us here may all be adults but this is not a private blog, so it’s open to anyone who wishes to read it. I was of the belief yesterday morning that the previous night’s post had been a one time oops but I was proven wrong last night.

That being said, I’ve always been an advocate of freedom of expression. I would hate to see this place turn into thought police heaven, where every time somebody says something we don’t like, we get huffy and hit the report button. If you are having issues with the way a particular poster expresses him/herself, email Rodney at rho@ajc.com and let him know what you’re thinking.

Many people think that Rodney moderates this blog but he’s a working reporter with barely enough time to write the blog. He will read our comments when he has time but sometimes, he just doesn’t.

Good Morning all!!!!

I am glad to see that most of you had gotten around some of that nasty weather last night!!! We have a fire station that backs up to my office in Forsyth County and the last hour at work yesterday we were pretty much blasted out by the tornado sirens. Luckily, the storm went a little north of where we are.

Anyways, on to Idol….I was not surprised whatsoever by the top 12 picks. However, I really did enjoy watching poor little Tatiana (see annoying drama queen) cry and act absolutely devistated. That was quite enjoyable in my own little sadistic way. Next week will be interesting…looks like they did not really do a good job of spreading some of the talent IMHO. I think that this week was too stacked while next week will probably have some good ones… (I agree with Nana – looks like Jasmine is definitely going to be a favorite) but nothing like this week was.

And I also really enjoy everyone’s opinion….even if it is something that I don’t necessarily agree with, I still think that this is a forum to express them and if you (the collective that is reading this) has a problem with it, well, tough. It is what it is…a place to express opinions. Lighten up and quit with the name-calling. Not appropriate.

From the sound of things,D, I should probably be looking for the green umbrella somewhere around here! We usually get the same weather as you–only several hours later.

Good morning good people! Quite a night with the storms last night. We had a metal roof installed on our home 2 years ago and last night was the first time we had hail since it was put on. It sounded like we were in a steel barrell with someone dumping gravel on it! We were freaked out for about 5 minutes the sound was deafening. My poor Dogs and Parrots went berzerk! Upon inspection this morning all I could see was one large tree limb down. Thank God we got through that one ok. I hope everyone else came out as well as we did. Did anyone else notice that Tatiana shed crocodile tears last night. She went through all the motions but no tears came out. What a drama queen! GO GOKEY!!

sorry i couldn’t join you guys last night — we had sirens and storms and all, but nothing went out — but i had stuff i had to do, and it was hubby’s night off — i DID get to watch the show, and linny pats herself on the back i only voted for 3 people (repeatedly): Danny, Alexis and Michael. Noop disappointed me, but i was certain he’d at least have a wild-card chance, so did not worry about him. My fourth choice would have been Ricky Braddy — i was impressed by him.

As for tonight — Figure Jasmine and Adam unless they just flat out blow it, should be in. I figure our welder, Matt, probably WON’T get in because Michael DID get in, and i doubt the voters will want both of them (tho’ I could stand it, LOL)

ok, I’m swamped here again, so I’ll catch youse guys later.

linny…I voted for Ricky and still hope that he gets a shot at a wild card.

And I agree with most of the speculation for next week’s rounds. Jasmine and Adam and Matt should be the top 3 but those nerves get in the way. Adam is a seasoned stage performer so, while that might help, he might also get freaked out by the cameras. Don’t know how much experience the other 2 have so..we’ll just have to wait and see.

I figure whichever one didn’t make it will be back for the wildcard. Paula has talked a bit about Ricky, so I’m thinking he’s already a wildcard. ;)

JT, Carrie and Fleetwood Mac would be awesome! Also, have you heard her cover or Paradise City and Sweet Child O’ Mine? I think she could do those, and throw in Alone as well. Not that the girl needs to do a cover album, but it sure would be fun.

He wouldn’t make it real far if he got in the top 12, but I do think he should of been there over Michael. I like Mike, but he was aweful last night.

My Wife and I were talking about the new format last night of the three groups. She brought up the fact that she thinks it is unfair to the first group and somewhat to the second group because they have less time to practice plus the second and third groups get the advantage of seeing what the other performers do and what the voters reaction was. The group going last has three weeks to prepare vs. one and two weeks for groups one and two is that fair? What do you guy’s think?

Mike S

February 19th, 2009
10:55 am

I actually thought about that too KPH. I would say it depends on what Idol has done though. The singers still have to pick songs from a list provided by IDol, and the second & third group may not be allowed to pick thier songs or rehearse them until the week of thier performances. At least, I would hope that is what they are doing.

There is also a flip side to it. The other 24 got to see what the judges did to some of the contestants, so while they have longer to prepare they also have longer to get nervous.

GAgirl

KPH

February 19th, 2009
11:07 am

Maybe you are right Mike that AI has done something to even it out. Not Allowing them to pick or practice their songs until the week before they are going to perform is the only way to take that advantage away. Maybe Rodney could inquire if that is what they are doing or if they have thought about this.

Mike S

February 19th, 2009
11:14 am

It is definately an intriguing question KPH.

I would also love to know exactly how they are going to do the Wildcard show. How are they going to decide who performs, how are they going to decide who gets through. Since it is 3 people and 4 judges it is obviously not an “each judge gets to choose a person” scenario. Will they vote after the performances? Inquiring minds want to know!

JTesla

February 19th, 2009
11:20 am

What surprises me is that after 7 years people still put no effort into song choice. The Police? Really? I still can’t get over that one. I feel that the second and third groups will be judged more harshly by the voting public based on song selection. The contestants know, as we do, that song selection was key in week one, if they can’t learn from that they fail.

Extra time to prepare probably does not equal extra time with the band and on stage. The band and stage time is most likely allotted to the current group, so group three contestants can sing to themselves all they want, but they are not getting extra time to practice with the arrangement that will be used on performance night.

Deirdre, I’m glad your umbrella has been spotted in Athens, there is at least a chance you can get it back if someone is willing to climb the tree and retrieve it for you.

NANA, I need more info on the Bachelor, give me some kind of clue as to who it is. You don’t need to reveal a name, but I really do want a clue!

GAgirl…lol! I’m starting to be jealous of my umbrella…it gets to travel more than I do!

Y’all are making good points and asking good questions. I wish they’d be more forthcoming about how they’re running things this year. No one can really figure out how the wild card round is going to work or how the contestants are chosen or how the judges will pick the final 3. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.

KPH

February 19th, 2009
11:37 am

True JT they probably dont get the band to practice with but there are plenty of karaoke options available and they all probably can get their hands on a boom box. You are dead on about some of the song choices. There are some artist that just shouldnt be covered on this show and Sting is one of them he is just too unique with his vocals. Especially for a woman. More good questions Mike. Looks like we have given Rodney some investigative work to do. :-)

Mike S

As far as the other groups having an advantage for going later. Yes, and no. More time to pick better songs, but more expectations and time to freak out!

Y’all ain’t old. Heck, I am in my 20s (I guess I’m the “baby” of this group?) and even I have gotten stuff from the AARP. I was still in college at the time! LOL.

GAGirl, your mention of Santa Ana totally bring Jeff Dunham to my mind! He is a riot! “Sanata…ana!”

BTW, Mike, I love your “mind cleansing” trick. Ha. But it must have been horrible for you, ’cause I wouldn’t think I’d need to get past the first one. ;)

one other point to question: If, by some chance, each of the 3 weeks we vote it ends up 2 guys and 1 gal, the presumption will be that there WILL be 3 femails picked in wildcard week if…IF… they are maintaining the evenly divided sex grouping. That also seems hardly fair, since it’s pretty obvious that, as has been touted over and over, the guys are predominate in skill and talent this year. It would mean that people like Ricky Braddy, Anoop Desai, and others will have virtually NO chance to make it even WITH the much-ballyhoo’d “wild card” week.

INQUIRING minds want to KNOW!!!

I didn’t get to see the show last night, but glad to see my predictive powers have not left me. I told my wife I thought Danny and Alexis would make it through, and the third choice was a toss up between Michael, Anoop, and Ricky.

I didn’t comment on the previous show, but man, there were some AWFUL performances! And I truly hate this “top 3″ out of 12. I am just thinking what about the poor slob who comes in 4th one night, but is better than any of the 12 from another night? And what is up with having to take the top girl and top guy, then the third? What happens if 3 girls get the most votes, but one doesn’t make it because they have to take the top guy? Once again, AI is proving it doesn’t really care about getting the best singer, just the best ratings.

I have a prayer…”Please Lord, don’t let them pick Tatiana for wild card…Please Lord, don’t let them pick Tatiana for wild card…Please Lord…”

Take care everyone.

One other thing I meant to add…I am very worried about myself. I make comments to my wife during the show, and then Simon echoes them almost word for word. If he and I think that much alike, I think I need professional help…

LOL @ Mike! Smart man.

Hate to break it to y’all, but unless the next 2 groups have some amazing singers…I have a strong feeling that Tatiana will be back.

IOE, LOL!!!! No, I’ll bet that while the words are the same, you don’t quite smirk the same way Simon does — there’s venom in his attitude MORE than his words usually!!! But I have to confess, it happens to me too much too — he actually, WHEN he does straight critique, is pretty dead-on. It’s just that when he doesn’t like something, he so frequently reverts to acid-toned insults. Ah well.

Y’all are scaring me…but I have to agree. Though, I have to say that Kara has quickly become my favorite judge. She’s honest, not overly mean, but she tells it like it is. And she seems like a cool chick. Plus, really, anyone who’s worked with Kelly on 8 songs can’t be that bad. :)

Personally I think we are trying to create a wild card scenario that is too strictly defined. I don’t believe that the final three wild cards will be selected based only on gender or be separated by the group they sang in. So if the judges feel that two of the wild cards need to be Ricky and Anoop, I’m certain that those will be the two that are selected.

The problem for people like Anoop and Ricky, is that I’m assuming that there will be one or two people like them in each of the next two groups. It’s quite possible that the blog consensus will have six people selected for the wild card spots. If the wild card round is 12 people singing, and we like six of those, we are still stuck with the fact that only three can get through. Bummer.

For me the worst case scenario is if Group 3 tanks so badly that someone like Ricky would have easily won that group, but there is too much competition, or he messes up, so that he doesn’t make the wild card spot. In essence his fate would come down to the group number he was assigned. Of course it would stick with the tradition of having some fodder in the top 12 to insulate the true talent.

I see the Braves have been jilted AGAIN! Ken Griffey Jr. is going to sign with Seattle after giving all indications he was coming to Atlanta. Jtesla if you get out to one of their games this season will you boo him for me? :-) I am starting to wonder if our new GM Frank Wren may be incompetent!

My hubby won’t let me join AARP. he doesn’t like their political stance and he hates that they are anti-gun…since he just made me get my concealed weapon permit…you can imagine his thoughts on the subject.

Unfortunately Harm, we have no say in who the judges pick for wild cards which prevents us from having the pure joy of eliminating Tatiana again.

First, I’m with Deirdre about the so call name-calling on here. I also missed it, and I have re-read the last two threads and still didn’t see any name calling.

Now on to the topic…..If they are to have 3 wildcards to make up the top 12, does it mean that Simon won’t have a vote unless he is the tie breaker? Also, are they going to bring back one from each group or three in general? If they bring back one from each group, that would seem more fair than to bring back three from one group. Pray tell, just how is this going to work?

Harm: He proposes to one and after she accepts the ring, he changes his mind and proposes to the other. DeAnna plays a part in his decision.

KPH, there are going to be a lot of disappointed people up here with that news. People from Portland actually looked forward to the three hour drive to Seattle just so they could boo him. The whole Pacific Northwest area kind of fed off the Ken Griffey Jr. hate, now what do we do?

Wait, Deirdre is packing? Watch out everyone!

AARP has sent me stuff for the last 10 years as well, just like K&CF….and I just turned 30!!! I think that they are just looking for members.

It’s going to be really interesting to see who the judges pick to be in the wildcard show. I sincerely hope that the drama queen doesn’t get near the show, although I have a very foreboding feeling that we are going to see her there.

Your son-in-law sounds like an intellegent man Harm. I dont think they will actually try it but there are a lot of people in office right now that would like to do it. If they did try it I think the military as well as law enforcement would flat out refuse. They realize that we all deserve the right to defend ourselves.

Linny, you are so right about Simon. Funny thing is, I think sometimes he says terrible things just to get Paula going. If you ever watch him, when he throws out one of his pattented zingers, often he is looking sideways at Paula to see her reaction. I think sometimes he doesn’t even mean what he is saying, he just likes to get her riled.

I think if Simon and Paula were ever to get married and have children, their offspring would be….Eddie Izzard!
