2/3: American Idol recap, early Hollywood rounds

This first round episode was actually pretty low key. No Brittenum Twin type outbursts though Dennis Brigham gets a few decent insults out.

I’m really waiting for tomorrow’s group sings!

We start with everybody getting a shot to sing a capella. They’re in — or out. In the end, about two thirds of the 150-odd folks will make it to round two.

Lil Rounds gets through with a powerhouse, ballsy “I Will Always Love You.” She seems to have a sweet disposition and a commercial look. She has a definite shot at the top 12. But Dennis Brigham is all bug-eyed schtick and he’s bitter when he gets rejected. “Y’all suck as judges,” he says.

Early going, not so good (including early favorite Frankie Jordan)

Nathaniel Marshall tries an obscure Ray Bolts song and he sounds great but Paula thinks the song doesn’t showcase his vocals. He cries as he explains why this is so important for him. Anoop Desai and Jasmine Murray both take the stage and control it. Rose Flack, who got the pimp spot on the Salt Lake City show, is struggling before her first performance. She sounds a bit breathy and nervous. But she makes it through, along with the other three.

After the break, we hear Stephen Fowler, a man we haven’t seen before. He has a great R&B vibe. I really like him. Jorge Nunez, from Puerto Rico, has those dated jerri curls but his vocals are immaculate. Von Smith is the white soul/theater singer and he’s overdramatic as always. “Indulgent nonsense,” Simon said. “It’s the sort of thing a child would do.” (Ouch!) But they all go on.

Debra Byrd, vocal coach, gets some airtime telling the contestants about song choice.

Nick Mitchell (AKA Norman Gentle), the goofball from New York, has the nuts to go do “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” He is hilarious but you know he has zero chance of making the top 36. “You can actually sing,” Randy said. “You have skills dawg.” Simon said, “I don’t know what to make of you.” He makes it through for at least one more round.

Blind boy Scott MacIntyre and single mom Frankie Jordan did make it through.

Day two of round one: Jackie Tohn has tons of personality and a gritty voice. (She’s the gal who had the window fall while she sang.) She’s a bit over the top but quite good.

Danny Gokey, the man whose dad died from Milwaukee, does Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose.” He has a unique tone to his voice. Jamar Rogers is his friend from earlier auditions and is equally good. “You’re different and very relevant. I’m a fan,” Randy said.

Bikini girl alert: Katrina Darrell is pure irritation. She does an okay rendition of Faith Hill. Kara: “You were better than the earlier audition. But it went kind of off at the end and got kind of thin.” She gets past round one.

Caretaker Jessica Furney is out. Sharon Wilbur is a goner. Patricia Roman and her big family didn’t make it either.

Jeremy Michael Sarver, the roughnecker, was impressive. Jesus Valenzuala also sounds solid but not good enough. Jeremy makes but Jesus doesn’t.

David Osmond and Erika Wesley are heard briefly. Tattoed punk rocker blonde Emily Wynne-Hughes sounds fine to me (and I still like her) but Kara said, “I remember you really clearly but the song was disappointing. It didn’t show me where you are going or who you really are.” “I expected more from you,” Simon said. Erika is out but David and Emily survive another day. Erika tries to fight, being the only one among eight who didn’t make it. But the judges stand by their decisions.

Alexis Grace, Brent Keith Smith and Ann Marie Boskovich and Adam Lambert all get props.

Tomorrow: the group sings! Woohoo!

I am going to post this both here and on the Melinda Doolittle blog.

Review – Coming Back To You – Melinda Doolittle

Dust off your platform shoes, Bell-bottom pants, and tab collars; then frizz your hair, put your boom-box on your shoulder and strut your stuff down the boulevard baby; because that old time 1960’s Motown sound is back!

And therein lies both the beauty and the problem with an album that is truly a vocal masterpiece. Melinda Doolittle reinforces the perceptions of her amazing instrument and at the same time does nothing to change the perception that she is a old school R&B star that has never made it into the 21st Century.

From the first foot tapping funky beats of “Fundamental Things” to the final notes of “Through the Fire”, Melinda takes us on an absolutely breathtaking journey through the wonderful sounds of the heyday of the Motown sound.

No song shows the true diacotomy of this album better than Melinda’s attempt to bring Aretha Franklin’s masterpiece “Wonderful” into the 21st Century. Melinda goes toe to toe with the Queen of Soul in this song and more than holds her own. The problem is Melinda tries to make the song sound more modern and she falls short. No matter how hard she tries, and no matter how amazing she sounds, the song still sounds like it is stuck in the 60’s.

Please do not think that I am taking anything away from Melinda here. I absolutely loved this album, and I think any aspiring singer should be made to listen to this vocal master class. Melinda goes from funky to soulful to mellow to lovely to smokin bluesy, and pulls off every sound absolutely brilliantly.

MY favorites were Fundamental things – a great funky flashback song, We Will Find Away – absolutely beautiful understated vocals that build throughout the song, and Walkin Blues – this is by far Melinda’s wheelhouse, she puts the BLUE in Blues in this song. Walkin Blues is a WOW.

In conclusion, this is an absolute must have for fans of Melinda Doolittle, fans of Motown, and any child of the 60’s. This is a wonderful album to kick back and relax to, play while riding, or play in the background at a party. But, I do not see any song that is going to rock the charts, and it does nothing to sell Melinda Doolittle as a leading artist in this day and time. Unfortunately for Melinda all this album does is reinforce the perception that she is a Motown superstar 40 years too late.

Hollywood! Round one:

Lil Rounds- Lil tackles a Whitney song this early in the competition. Not a great choice of artist on this show. Judges usaully always nail you for not being as good. However, Lil may have the chops to pull these kinds of songs off, so that may not affect her. She’s really good ans will more than likely do well in the competition, but I didn’t really know how to absorb what she did. I think just the way she sang it was unexpected, so it was a little hmmmm for me. But regardless, I really like her and her voice and I can’t wait to see more.

Nathaniel- Good vocals… but people with that look bother the agh outta me! Especially guys…

Jasmine Murray- Man I was not crazy about her in the auditions, but I loved her tonight!!!

Rose Flack- I liked it. Didn’t care for her in the auditions, but this was better — she needs more enthusiasm up there though. Probably why I hear she didn’t make Top 36, either that or her vocals.

———-BEFORE-IT-HAPPENED———-

Simon says: “I thought it was indulgent nonsense”
My prediction: Von Smith. Why? Because he was a judges’ favorite in the auditions, as they mentioned, and because he has the potential to produce, well, over the top nonsense.

—–AFTER THE COMMERCIAL—–

Stephen Fowler- He was pretty good

Jorge Nunez (?) (Did Ryan say ‘whore-hay’?) yeah.. I’m just gonna go Kara’s way and say it like George. He was sooo good by the way…

Von Smith- I knew it!!! Yeah… I’m just good I guess. So, it was pretty dang annoying…but I don’t see that going away, cause that’s the type of singer he is.

Nick- Wasn’t too bad…

I actually wanted to hear Scott & why he got through because I was NOT very impressed in his audition..Frankie Jordan got through as well.

Jackie Tohn- Jackie was a half and halfer for me. Parts I didn’t like so much & parts I really loved. But the parts I loved beat out those I did not.

Jamar- Very good.

Danny Gokey- Probably my favorite male so far this year… I think.

Why didn’t we get to see Leneshe? I won’t look at the list, but I hear she didn’t make Top 36… so I’d like to see and hear as much as I can from her until then because I really enjoyed her audition and want to see where else she can go. But she did make it through, so maybe another day.

Katrina- You know, she wasn’t that bad… I mean she isn’t great by any means, but not too bad.

Jeremy- (Why did I think his name was Michael Sarver?)- Anyway, he was pretty good.

David Osmond- Pretty good.

Emily Hughes- Missed her, well, heard it among other talking.

Adam, Brent, Anne, and Alexis make it through as well- no surprises, but Adam Lamber: I HATE THE EMO-LIKE LOOK!!!!! You’ve got a fantastic voice no doubt, but don’t let the image ruin it for me! He will I’m sure. But I’ll still like his voice probably… well that’s if you know, he does well like his initial audition.

I wanted to see Alexis Grace. She excited me in the auditions. She did make it through. Maybe tomorrow?

Tomorrow = group round.
Yuck, I’d hate having to be in a group.
Simon Says “Forget the words and you’re going home”
So- basically if your group members mess up resulting in you messing up, you’re screwed.

Good Morning All!

I though that for the most part, it sounded pretty good. But I definitely have to agree with GAGirl…she annoyed the ever loving heck out of me. Yuck. And her attitude and that dress?! Please. Get off the stage honey and give your spot to someone who deserves it more.

I loved Jorge! I can’t wait to see more of him….and Lil was ok, not my favorite song, but she has some pipes. Did anyone else pick up that Jackie reminded them of Amanda Overmeyer from last season? Hopefully she has more desire to actually do well than Amanda though. I did like her alot.

Deirdre

February 4th, 2009
7:47 am

Morning!

JJ…I was thinking the same thing about Jackie/Amanda. However, Jackie seems a little more open, friendly and controlled than Amanda.

My favorites last night(and there were a lot)Anoop, Jasmine, Jorge(and yes, Justin, in Spanish it’s pronounced Hor-hey)Stephen, Danny, Jackie, Jeremy, and David.

Maybe Simon is right when he says this is another guy’s year.

It’s 15 degrees at my house this morning!

18 here, D, and I do not like it! I agree about those you liked last night, and it looks like to me the guys are somewhat better. I really loved Danny, and Jackie will go far if she gets away from the Joplin thing. I love Janis, but Jackie will need to establish her own sound to go very far. Having said that, it is incredibly difficult to sing the way she does. I like her far better than Amanda. Amanda took too many pains to look “dangerous.”

harriett

harriett

8:52 am

Yeah, D. I don’t think she will be able to get past her “bikini” persona to pull off a group thing. Could be wrong. As for the post swallower, it is doing it again today with a vengeance. We have just been so spoiled with the new wordpress thing, that I guess it seems worse than it is.

The snippets of group night they showed made it look like there was an abundance of drama coming up. But, then they love to skew things to make folks want to watch. I couldn’t help but laugh last night at Dennis’ insults at Simon about his “cheap” clothes.

Ya know, if Paula and Kara were putting someone through because the male judges didn’t like him/her, Simon would be throwing a royal snit-fest. OH, I think Bikini Girl probably PLAYS very well with others. NOw, whether she can get along in a singing group setting is a different story.

NY favs last night were Danny Gokey (does he remind anyone else of Elliot when he sings?), Anoop Dogg, Jorge and Jackie. I was not as impressed with Lil Rounds this time, it sounded like she screamed the entire song; and Von made me turn the sound down.

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

February 4th, 2009

Lil screamed, and i was sad for it — when when WHEN will these girls realize that sounding like whitney or celine or aretha doesn’t require SCREAMING it requires great control … and the ability to reach notes without seeming to strain for them (i.e., scream).

Mike thank you so much for the review of Melinda’s cd — i’m off to get it next payday (last one is already shot!)

I still think that’s it was pretty good that Idol focused on the people who made it to the next round last night and not on the people who didn’t. IMO, the show seems to have a whole new focus. They want us to hear the good ones more than they want us to laugh at the bad ones. If that’s the result of Nigel Lythgoe leaving…then great!

Good morning folks. Heard some good ones last night but no one made the WOW factor with me. Danny Gorkey so far has come the closest. I agree Mike that Lil Rounds shouted the song instead of singing it but she seems to be the one this year that is a judges favorite even though I cant really see it. Maybe she will change my mind later. I also noticed that Rose looked pregnant but didnt during her original audition. I wonder how long it is between auditions and Hollywood week?

I am going to go back and replay Rose’s perfomance and see what I think. I did not really examine her last night, other than to think her dress was way too large for her. Did not even think about possibly being pregnant.

Deirdre

February 4th, 2009

I just looked at Rose again and…it sure looks like she’s pregnant. Idol’s first pregnant contestant? I don’t know how that will go over. They might be caught between a rock and a hard place here. Perhaps she would be better off if she left, had the baby, then tried again next year. She is definitely talented. Then again, all this is speculation and those might be really flowing tops that she’s wearing…….a LOT of really flowing tops!

Another one that I liked a lot was Jasmine Murray. I agree with Kara’s assessment that she has a raw and very commercial sound.

Did naked girl make it last night? They had a shot of her sitting in chairs with a group during the makeover session, but I didn’t see anything else. I guess they had to cut her time so we could see bikini girl try to give Ryan herpes. Ryan if you are reading two words: hazmat suit.

LOL JT, but lots of truth there! I did not see the nudist gal there last night. She had a decent voice, as I remember.

I have to say, in light of some they let through, that Erika did not make it; i personally thought she had quite a lovely voice — but hey, what do *I* know???

LOL

and I for one could go a whole dozen lifetimes without EVER seeing bikini-katrini again … her singing was “adequate” but her ATTITUDE …. oh. my. god. she drove me up the freaking WALL!!!

LOL!! JT!

I am pleased with the judges choices so far…with the exception of bikini girl and probably Nick/Norman (although I think he’s funny in a ‘Jerry Lewis meets Steve Martin’ kind of way)

I thought for a sec that Rose looked a bit, um, big, too. I haven’t seen anything on the wires to suggest she is.
