Jennifer Hudson sang a flawless National Anthem tonight at the Super Bowl. This is her first major public singing performance since her mom and brother died in a triple homicide. Bravura Jennifer!
Yesterday, I linked to some YouTube video of the performance and found out it has been taken down. (The NFL is trying to stop such violations, obviously.)
The show producer Ricky Minor, who also produces the music on “American Idol” insisted she and Faith Hill singalong to pre-recorded tracks. In other words, lip synch:
“That’s the right way to do it,” Minor said. “There’s too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance.”
So it’s not her choice, simply Minor trying to ensure things go smoothly.
Also, just got this news via press release:
Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award nominee Jennifer Hudson and multi-platinum singer-songwriter Seal are set to perform at the 40TH NAACP IMAGE AWARDS, which will broadcast live from Los Angeles’ historic Shrine Auditorium Thursday, Feb. 12 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

Good Morning one and all……. We made it to another week, so let’s use it wisely.
Today’s Quote: “The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.”
Jennifer looked absolutely great. And those Steelers, man-o-man, what can I say. They looked just as good as they did when Terry Bradshaw played for them. I wished I had signed up on a pool. Two hours before the game started, I told my hubby that Pittsburgh would win by 4, and by golly they did. Bet I coulda won some money if I had been in a pool, gosh darn it. Oh well, wasn’t meant to be.
Rodney, I enjoyed the article on Bo. He really looks good and I’m glad he is getting better. I hope he continues to do good.

JEnnifer was Awesome and looked absolutely gorgeous. I also thought Faith Hill’s “America” was very well done, and well the Boss was the BOSS!
And all the great musical acts were actually trumped for once by a great football game. I was rooting for the Steelers, and am hapopy in that regard, but WOW the grit and heart the Cardinals displayed was exciting.

Morning!
Smitty..what a sourpuss. Since everybody HAS to lip-synch…I don’t see what your problem is. She did a great job with the pre-recording…ok?
I had an hour to kill this weekend and went to the playground known as “Archives of the old ajc blog” I visited late Feb. 2008 to see how we all reacted to AI’s auditions and Hollywood week. I also read our comments after each group from the top 24 sang their first songs. It’s pretty funny going back and seeing our opinions at the beginning of the season while knowing how we felt by the end. One VERY surprising fact…we all thought Ramielle was great!
No, seriously!

I am very picky when it comes to those singing the National Anthem. I do not like it when they change the tune and put tons of runs in it. the song is beautiful how it is written. With that in mind, I think jennifer did a wonderful job (pre-recorded or not) with it and she looked wonderful too. I think there was a moment when she looked a little teary – but pulled through. I am proud of her.
As for the game, I didn’t watch it. Not a big pro football fan. but I did record it to watch the commercials and halftime show – boy, was that a let down – the commercials, I mean. BORING!!!
The Boss, however, was awesome!!!!

morning blogsters
since yesterday was my birthday AND God granted me a beautiful warmish day, hubby grilled out and we had a couple of the kids over and … we watched other stuff and then, after the game was over, we watched the highlights. None of us were particularly interested in the game or either of the teams, really.
D, i bet that was fun, looking back a year ago!!! I’ve glanced at some of the archives on occasion, but … i never thought to compare the season beginning like you did.
i’m still a little bit um… er…. spacy this morning from all the revelry yesterday (and saturday night) celebrating, so i guess i best try to concentrate on work a while…

But, it reminds me of some people who were hanging around.
DawnH…hoping you’ll return once the season gets moving!
Tami…looking forward to hearing from you again.
Lots of others who joined us during the season, then left.
I also have concerns about the new ajc.com format. It seems that a direct link to a specific blog doesn’t stay on for more than an hour. We met lots of nice people(plus trolls, of course) because, during show days we’d be linked from the front page all day long. I hope that they intend to do this again…I guess that depends on how popular the show is and how much controversy it generates.

The new format on ajc.com definitely makes it harder for my blog entries to stay up for long and perhaps it isn’t generating enough traffic to merit staying up, reflective of the waning popularity of the show in general (though ratings are holding up reasonably well.). My traffic is definitely down from a year ago but it has been slipping since the peak year of season five in 2006.
Deirdre

It’s a catch-22, Rodney. You get traffic with a direct link on the front page but they don’t keep a direct link if you don’t have enough traffic. At least we should get a lot of people coming in on show days. That’s what happened last year.

Thank you all for that, I appreaciate it. Im being completely sincere no sarcasm at all.
Now on to the Superbowl, Jennifer & Faith LOVED it!!! They both performed wonderfully, pre-recorded or not.
Steelers (stand up!!)I wasnt too excited about the game itself, being as to how my team wasnt in it lol, but I decided to go with the Steelers. Oh that was such a GOOD game!!!

That’s a shame – surely a multi-million dollar “artist” can handle the dynamics of a live performance. This Ricky Minor producer clown should be banned from the industry…….saying he wouldn’t advise any artist to go live is ridiculous. Don’t take some scrod off the streets and over produce their performance – if I wanted all my “artists” to not perform live then just CGI all of them…….what a crock….

Jenniferfan – Ricky Minor, who produced the pregame performances by Faith Hill and Jennifer has been out all over today defending the decision to lip synch and stating that he forced them to do it that way to avoid technical glitches.
And actually it was a “Sing along” not a lip synch per se.
They do this for multiple reasons though, not only to prevent technical glitches. It prevents “freeze up” and forgetting or mixing up the words, which is frequently caused by the stadium sound system being up to a second or two behind the performer.
If you DVRed the game, Go back and listen. You will actually hear THREE tracks – the recorded track playing on stage, the live voice, AND the stadium delay.

Was that the National Athem? It sounded like a Disney Theme song or a Christmas Carol. Yes, she has a great voice, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, quit messing with the National Athem. Sing it the way it was written. It is not a showcase for your vocal talent and range nor is it an audition for American Idol. You might as well change the stars around on the flag. KNOCK IT OFF!!!!

Oops have some house cleaning to do -
LINNY – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!
WANDA – WELCOME or WELCOME BACK, whichever is the case.
CHINA – WELCOME TO THE BLOG. Sit down and stay a spell. I am sure we can change your mind about the maturity level. LOL
DAVE – Ricky was talking about Live performances at big events like the Super Bowl, not concerts, etc. In a large stadium where the sound is being pumped through the stadium PA, there has been an echo effect for years, and it has tripped up even the most seasoned performers. Most performers have the track playing in an earpiece so they can hit thier marks, and the stadium sound effect throws that off something horrible. ALMOST EVERY National Anthem and performance at a large event is lip synched, Ricky Minor just happens to be one of the few who has stood up and acknowledged that they do it.
Now the exception is the half-time shows, they usually have thier own sound equipment on stage, and the sound from that is loud enough to drown out the “Stadium Effect”, so they are able to perform live without problems.

Oh wow!!!!!! looks as if some people have burrs in their panties. First, Rodney is blasted, then JHud singing the National Anthem that was recorded earlier, Deirdre for “making a comment to GAgirl. If the lukers read us regularly, they would know that Deirdre and GAgirl were just funning with each other. I’m with Deirdre about the pool. Warm enough in sunny Cali to take a dip, but here in Georgia, it’s so gosh darn cold. I’m so ready for spring and warmer weather. Does anyone know if General Lee (Atlanta groundhog) saw his shadow this morning? What about the groundhog in PA?
I always thought one lip-synch in a stadium of that magnitude due to the acoustic sounds. It really doesn’t matter if JHud/Faith sung live or not, the voice that was heard was theirs 100%, so I don’t see a problem here. Some are just creating an issue where none exists.

Jennifer Hudson has a beautiful voice. There is no doubt about that. I just wish that all singers would just sing the national anthem basically as it is written without all the embelishments. It’s as if they are trying to “out-Whitney” Whitney Houston’s version. As beautiful as Jennifer Hudson’s voice is, about half way through her rendition I started thinking about the parody anthem Maya Rudolph did on SNL.

Of course, it isn’t starting in January as we are in February. What happened to January?

I know this is a bit late, but — Jennifer DID sing the National Anthem. She RECORDED it prior to the game, because, as Mike pointed out, the acoustics can destroy your ability to “hear yourself sing” and throw you off — but she DID sing it ALONG WITH her recording of the song. In that sense, it was not singing or miming someone else — it was JHud’s version of the Anthem, and then she sang along with it in the stadium. Sort of like doing a “backup” tape when you’re a solo artist, and using it as backups/background/support when performing a song live.
To allllll the newbies and lurkers who popped their heads out of their abodes, along with General Beauregard Lee of Stone Mountain (who is correct, as far as I’m concerned about when spring will start — at least in the SOUTH) and Puxatawny Pete (who can have 6 more weeks of winter if HE wants to, but keep it up nawth, now heah!!) and joined us in the blog today — welcome welcome welcome!!!
discussions, even agruments and disagreements, are welcome — we’ve seen a lot of differing opinions over the years — just keep the peace by remembering that disrespect and rudeness and harassment are unnecessary for you to make the point that you disagree with someone!!! we tend to LOOOOOVE a good discussion of the merits of someone’s talent around here, LOL!!!
see y’all tomorrow!

Flawless? Effortless? Yes those 2 words are appropriate here as she tape recorded her performance earlier and then lip synched it at the event. Why was she chosen to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. She has some celebrity status but she’s just a newbie. There are a lot of talented, established singers out there. Could have been a better, more tasteful performance. Lyn. fromwembleypark.com

Lyn: if someone who wasn’t a “newbie” was chosen to sing the anthem, they too would have been forced to lip-synch their performance. The choice wasn’t Jennifer’s. Oh and I’m sure Jennifer looks at her Oscar every night and says “Boy Oscar, I sure am a newbie.” Then she proceeds to say the same thing to her Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, Teen Choice Award, SAG, and other awards. Of course after all that she thinks about her four 2009 Grammy nominations and frets about being such a “newbie.” Jennifer Hudson not established… yeah right.
