1/27: Idol audition city #5 Jacksonville recap

I went to a party tonight in which the public relations coordinator promised celebs. There were none (unless you count the singer Monica) before I left at 9 p.m.

Anyway, Jacksonville was not quite as entertaining as Louisville but was far better than San Francisco. And it was slightly less fruitful too with 16 total tickets to Hollywood. We heard only six of them and none of them looks like the next Kelly Clarkson — yet. After five cities, we have 100 people through, a bit fewer than typical. We’ve seen 45 of them so far. (Mike S counted 44. I may have miscounted somewhere.)

First up: Joshua Ulloa from Beverly Hills, Fla. has a great voice but throws in silly sound effects a la Blake Lewis with more personality. I actually like this guy. He’s like Dustin Diamond meets Justin Guarini. Simon said it was “gimmicky and corny, like out of Inspector Gadget.” “I like the crazy and wild. At least it was entertaining,” Randy said. He’s on his way!

Jacksonville’s Sharon Wilbur brought along a prop – Sasha, the shih-tzu. She’s very affected doing “Superstar.” I don’t like her at all. No heart. Simon says yes. So does Randy. “I like your tone,” Randy said. I have no clue why she got through. Maybe it was the dog. Or Kara and Paula fake kissing?

After Ryan gets lost in a golf cart, we get Dana Moreno, who kills Chaka Khan. Kaneswa Finnie obliterates Anita Baker. Jelissa Veloz, a beauty queen, is surprisingly good doing Whitney. “You didn’t actually make the song sound nice,” Simon said. It did lack a level of warmth or something. I also felt like Kara did, that we were waiting for her to hit a really bad note.

Darin Darnell, from Houston, is overcome with emotion and sucks, too.

Naomi Sykes pops up with her best friend Samantha. Samantha gets to sit on Randy’s lap. Paula sits on Simon’s lap. Ryan sits on Kara’s lap and bounces him. Eeeww. “The bizarre season continues,” Randy said. Naomi Sykes from Tampa tries Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You” and ruins it in an amusing way. “Everyone tells me I’m great,” she said. She isn’t. The party is over.

Day one is over and nine contestants made it through. The judges weren’t deeply impressed.

Sixteen year old Jasmine Murray of Starksville, Miss. is beautiful and is pretty good, if a bit nasally. “Cute, commercial and a very good singer,” Simon said. She’s in.

George Ramirez, the oddly bearded 18 year old physics student from Jacksonvilile, is singing… something. It’s Monotone Idol! I can’t even recognize the song. My girlfriend ID’d it as “Walking on Sunshine.” Sheesh.

T.K. Hash from Concord, N.C. does a soulful take on “Imagine.” He’s darn good. I really like him. “You sound even better this year,” said Paula, who remembers him from last year, when he didn’t make it through. “It was too over the top, too many runs,’ Randy said. Simon says no but three say yes.

Michael Perrelli is a man who loves his guitar but was bummed he couldn’t use it for his audition. He panics a bit. He goes guitar-less doing Third Eye Blind’s “Jumper.” He’s decent, a bit nervous. “You’re quite interesting but your voice isn’t,” Simon said. “I think you’d struggle within the parameters of this competition.” I would tend to agree. But I’d give him a shot. The judges don’t. Oh, well.

Anne Marie Boskovich from Nashville, the judges felt, lacked star quality the first time around. So she did a minor makeover and did “Bubbly.” She’s a quality singer. “I love the whole vibe, the way you twist the notes,” Randy said. She’s through!

I liked Annemarie(the girl they wanted to act more outgoing) She had a really good quality to her voice. And I liked TK(the guy who tried out the year before)

I liked Michael(the guitar kid) a lot more than Sharon(the dog carrying girl)yet Michael went home and Sharon gets to go to Hollywood. Go figure.

A couple of people who got through were kind of annoying. The beauty queen has a good voice singing but is a pain in the butt talking. And the first guy, Joshua would be alright if he would just calm down and sing…I’m not sure we actually heard what he sounds like when he’s not jumping around and making extraneous noises.

Justin

9:12 pm

Tonight was ok, no one outstanding really.

1. Josh (Holua?)- I actually kinda liked him.

2. Sharon Wilbur- She was good, but her voice was a little strange in parts. Still, good though. The dog? Yeah… I’m SURE that’s really allowed..

3. Julissa Veloz- I’ve seen that name on one of the Idol blogs in the recent past- where, why? Did she make something? She had a good voice… but the personality took away from it in a way.

4. Jasmine Murray- I thought she was good. Something about her voice was a little off-putting at certain times, but she was still good, so, we’ll see.

5. T.K. Hash- I don’t know why Simon said no, I thought he did good!

6. Ann Marie Boskovich- That was a lame audition! Did I miss something? Because I must not have caught what she said or did so bad in the beginning to the point where she actually had to leave and come back as a “new” person. That aside- very good voice.

We only got to see 6 yes’s??
Dang…

harriett

9:18 pm

D, I am with you on Michael. I thought he had a decent voice, but was so put off by not being able to play his guitar. Even given all that, he still sounded much better than dog girl and should have been put through. During the talkovers, he was singing Hey, There, Delilah and sounded really good. I did love Randy’s comment to TK about nothing being wrong with just singing a good melody and not scattering notes all over the scale.

Deirdre

January 27th, 2009
9:24 pm

I agree harriett. TK was all over the place with Imagine…to the point that it was almost unrecognizable. But he has a good voice and I think it will be even better when they break him of the sliding note habit.

NOt overly impressed tonight. I think we saw one possibly outstanding talent, and a couple of maybe’s; but that was about all. Overall – MEH!

Numbers wise – 6 out of 16 Golden Tickets, making it 44 of 100 so far through 5 shows.

Joshua – Good voice, needs to get rid of all the affectations and crap. There might be a great singer hiding behind the ah ah ah’s and Spit spit spits. But how would we ah ah ah woo woo ohah ooh ah ptui ptui Know?

Sharon – Just ok for me. Nothing special.

Julissa – ummm, yeah, ok, shut up and sing and you might be tolerable. IF YOU SHUT UP!

Jasmine – Very nice voice, not sure how well she will handle the pressure.

TK Hash – good, but not great. Was trying way to hard. Just sing dude!

Anne Marie – I loved her. Awesome voice. A definate top 36, and I think she will be a finalist.

11:20 pm

I’d like to start by apologizing for the general awfulness of the Florida auditions. At least they weren’t all from here.

Joshua-Just sing!!! I think there might actually be a good voice in there… somewhere.
Sharon- Eh, no. Why’d they put her through? Sasha was really cute though.
Julissa- OK, she can sing but she’s annoying. Bad laugh. She needs to hang out with the other annoying BQ with the bad laugh.
Jasmine- Distinctive voice & adorable. Not sure how versatile she’ll be.
TK- He overdid the song a bit but I really liked his voice.
AnneMarie- She makes my A-list. Love her voice. Don’t know why the judges wanted a “makeover”, she’s a pretty girl.

I don’t usually comment on the “nos” but I thought Michael sounded pretty good. Liked him better than the dog girl. I wonder if they thought he couldn’t handle the pressure of the show based on how frazzled he was in the audition.

flbravesgirl

January 27th, 2009
11:46 pm

So many of the delusional bad singers insist that family & friends tell them they’re good. Now family I understand but what’s up with these friends? Do the bad singers collect tone-deaf friends? Or is this a huge practical joke where people find the most gullible person they know & encourage them to sing?

Mike S

January 28th, 2009
12:05 am

I have to agree on Michael – I thought he sang quite well. I was really surprised he did not get through.

But, Simon may have been right when he said that AI might not be the right vehicle for michael, and Kara was dead on with her advice – form a band and go for it.

he can sing, and he seems to be a very good guitar player.. I think some day we may hear of michael again.

GAgirl

Other than Anne Marie, blah, blah, blah. I know I’m in the minority here but the 4 judges panel is just not working for me (although I do like Kara a lot). Maybe it just takes some getting used to and I could change my mind once we get to Hollywood.

everett

12:32 am

Had fun watching several auditioners tonight – Joshua, Julissa, Jasmine (wow! is she really only 16?) and Anne Marie. Actually found myself smiling through the show for the first time since this season started.

The big standout was, of course, Sasha the dog….probably has a brilliant future in Hollywood. Her owner? Nah.

An aside to harriett: guess we didn’t need a sob story tonight what with all the crying going on. Sheesh, does someone have a hankie for Darin?

Dare we hold out any hope for Salt Lake City?

And flbraves girl – it DOES seem like a huge practical joke sometimes!

JTesla

I have to agree with Deirdre, a step above San Francisco, but not a big one. Two more audition shows. I could have done without the lap sitting bit. It just made, what I knew would be a painful audition, worse.

Hi! I have searched and searched…. does ANYONE know the song that plays, after T.K Hash was accepted to go on to the next round? He ran out the door and the song playing in the background, I couldn’t make out any words, I wish I could find a video of the whole episode so I could listen closer, but does anyone here know?

JTesla

Google is your friend. I googled “tk has song” and found a link to a video on MJ’s blog (which is also found on the blogroll up above). No clue what the song is.

JJ

6:52 am

Good Morning Blogsters!

I wound up half-watching after about 8:30 as phone calls started pouring in over work drama….that being said, after reading your reviews, I don’t think that there was much that I missed! I did get to see Ann Marie’s audition and I really do like her….I agree that she is probably going to be in the finals, at least I hope. I just don’t understand the whole makeover thing.

GAGirl – I agree with you. I am not really digging the whole 4 judges thing…does anyone else feel like Paula is pretty much being swallowed whole by the other 3???

fLbravesgirl – I think that people are afraid to tell others what they truly think…especially the ones that are closest to them…that is why you see a bunch of horribly tone-deaf people trying to sing.

KJ

“The beauty queen has a good voice singing but is a pain in the butt talking”

I DO SUH WHITNEHHHHH

Yeah, that, plus the latinajaw means she’s probably not going much further. Expected more from a “beauty queen”.

And that contrived episode with Anne Marie was highly annoying. As if she wasn’t an obvious choice for Hollywood, maybe they’re just purposely getting her as much attention as possible.

Deirdre

January 28th, 2009
7:37 am

Morning!

Thanks, KJ…I LOVE being quoted! :-)

Well, Jacksonville was pretty much a washout for me. Liked Annemarie, liked TK and liked(sorta) Joshua. Let’s hope that SLC offers more entertainment in the form of good singers. Who was the physics guy who sang really quietly? I did start laughing at the end when he was singing the required song.

Mike S

January 28th, 2009
7:49 am

What is scary is I know a bunch of people just like “physics guy”. I guess it comes from working in the computer field and around a lot of sophisticated equipment and aircraft, I have always been around the “scientific” types — and believe it or not he is very typical of that type of person.

Not that I am stereotyping or anything. LOL

JJ

January 28th, 2009
8:01 am

LOL @ Mike S. Do we hang out in the same crowd?!?! Just kidding.

Seriously, why put yourself (and all of us, for that matter) through the torture of singing such a painful audition when you know darn well that it’s going to become one of the jokes of the day? Are people that hungry for attention??

Mike S

January 28th, 2009
8:13 am

JJ — Are people that hungry for attention??

I take it that was a rhetorical question. LOL

Deirdre

January 28th, 2009
8:17 am

Yes, computers(as I sit typing on one) have increased the number of socially inept people. The inability to interact with another human being is a sad/funny thing to watch. And I don’t think that physics guy was aware that he wasn’t a good singer.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE IDENTIFY THE SONG FROM T.K. HASH’S AUDITION?

I mean, the one that was played at the end of the audition, it was only on for a couple of seconds but I can’t make out any of the lyrics.

Good Morning!

Today’s Quote: “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.”

I’ll go with the concenus about Anna Marie. I think she will go a long way in Hollywood as well as T.K. Jasmine will do fairly well. What ever will Sharon do in HW without her dog? Joshua and Jelissa, not to sure about. Joshua needs to leave the theatrical scenes out, and Jelissa needs to be not so silly and not have a fake laugh. Good voice and looks but, come on, she needs to get real!!

Mike S

January 28th, 2009
8:46 am

THat quote is very good advice — although I must admit I have a hard time following it when the person I meet is obviously having a battle with thier lack of intelligence. LOL (translation: I do not handle people stuck on stupid very well)

harriett

I think Jessica is already on peoples’ nerves with that laugh and personality. Surely they will take that out of her, or maybe not, should they decide to leave it alone just so people can laugh at her.

I thinks some people need to just get a cola and a moon pie and sit back and relax, southern style. Waaaaaaay too much angst!

Good to see you guys out there this morning — i woke with a horrible sinus headache and caved back in under the blankets for an extra hour to let one of those sinus headache pills work — so now I’m rushing to catch up.

Mike, based on the screen name chosen, i have to agree with D; just thinking about the lyrics “hot diggity, dog diggity, man what you do to me” … you’ve got a fan!!!

Nana

January 28th, 2009
10:38 am

I also noted that Alan Jackson was not shown. After the radio interview that was played yesterday morning on Kicks 101.5, I thought for sure he would be shown. The song he did for his audition was “Love Somebody Like You.” He sung a portion of it on the air and I liked what I heard, so maybe we can hear more of him beginning next week.

Mike S – I have ZERO tolerance for anyone who wants to act stupid and who want people to thank that about them. Fist, I have to ask, “Why would anyone want others to think they are stupid?” As Judge Judy would ask “Do I have stupid written on my forehead?”

The nanny laugh!!!! OMG, please forget it. It stripes my very last nerve.

Thanks Deirdre for the spoiler. Glad to know that TK and Anne Marie are in the top 50.

JJ: Thanks for liking the quote. I received an email from a friend after I had posted that and she had the same quote listed. She and I must be on the same wavelength.

Good Morning Good people! Last night was as boring as Frisco to me. I did however like TK though I think he should have stuck to John Lennons version a little closer. The lyrics to Imagine werent supposed to be conducive to a sexual experience. I also thought Ann Marie Boskovich and Jasmine Murray were pretty good. I agree with several of you that not giving Michael Perelli another shot was a mistake. He is only 18 so we may see him again next season.

Harm

11:11 am

Good Morning, I didn’t blog last night cause I was tired, I’m mot the night owl I was last season. I agree that Michael should have made it through and I like the little Jasmine girl. I thought they would have showed Alan Jackson from Newnan, because of the same name and being from the same place.(my daughter works in Newnan and says ther is also a lawyer there named Alan Jackson) They are going to show Alan Osmonds son tonight at the Salt Lake City auditions.(he doesn’t need idol in my opinion, he’s got plenty of family connections)

I’m not going to complain about the rain,at least we are not involved in that yucky winter storm just to our north.

LOST tonight!!!
Nana, I did see where they brought DeAnna back on the Batchelor. I don’t think it was fair to the new girls. She had her chance!

D and Harm, I see where Lost is going to be at 8 and at 9. Are they both original episodes, or is one a re-run/retrospective?

Harm

The first hour is the re-run from last week. I think.

Deirdre

The 8pm show is the last hour from last week’s premier and the 9pm show is the new episode. If Idol runs overtime tonight…like it usually does…I’ll switch to Lost. I can always catch-up later.

Hey D…y’all! Yes, I sure have! Very, very exciting! I also saw the video last night (it was leaked and on youtube for a bit). Kelly looks fantastic. The video as a whole is cute and fun. There are parts that remind me of her Since U Been Gone and Low videos. :)

She has a new blog up: http://iamkelly.wordpress.com

Oh, last night! My fave has got to be AnneMarie. She was good. Other than that, I don’t get why Alan Jackson wasn’t on. I did hear the Bert Show interview with Kara this morning. I’m liking her personality.

Alan Jackson did get through to Hollywood. Rumor is though, he was placed in a bad group and was booted off. I can’t understand why though, I’ve heard the kid perform and must say he’s better than most people that have actually won American Idol. He truly is incredible! He was told that he would be given air time on the Jacksonville episode, and once again, rumor has it that American Idol didn’t want other record companies seeing his audition, because they want it to be through American Idol that he gets famous. In other words, they didn’t want other companies making him offers. But that’s just rumor….
