1/14: Audition night #2 in Kansas City

“Idol” comes to Kansas City, David Cook’s town. Big crowds, lots of enthusiasm, even Jason Castro pops by to support his brother.

Overall, I get a sense “Idol” is focusing less on the freaks, more on the future top 36. That’s a good thing for us regulars. There was some seriously good talent in K.C. I especially liked the bald welder Matt, the bubble tea gal Casey, confident Jessica (who sang Janis Joplin), Jason Castro’s bro, the Indian dude and the last gal Lil Rounds.

Thank you Mike S for tracking the numbers. We saw 10 of the 27 who made it through last night (similar ratio as last year’s first ep in Philly) and 12 of the 26 who made it through tonight (slightly better than the 10 out of 24 last year in Dallas) We’ve seen 41.5 percent of the Hollywood bound vs. 40 percent a year ago.

Ryan, in a teaser, says 147 make it to Hollywood.

Parsons, KS waitress Chelsea Marquandt is up first, noting how her friends and family encouraged her and told her how great she was. She has very deluded friends and family. She has no clue what she’s doing. She can’t hold a note without making men scream. “It sounded like a cat jumping off the Empire State Building and the noise it would make before it hit the floor,” Simon said.

Ashley Anderson from Clarksburg, N.J. sings a Leona Lewis song that “Footprints in the Sand.” She accidentally says “Footsteps” and Simon corrects her. He should know. He is a co-writer of the song. She’s actually pretty good and doesn’t get flustered by her error. I don’t love her but she’s good enough for Hollywood!

Bubbly bubble tea maker Casey Carlson from Minneapolis. She is gorgeous and you can tell Simon is enchanted. Her voice is quite vibrant as well. Is she a guaranteed top 12er? No. But she’s got a shot at the top 36. “I can see a package here,” Kara said.

Brian Hettler, trained in opera but has been out of the “business” for two years, got this big set up and you might think, maybe he might be good. But he’s awful. Abysmal. Painfully so. He’s Taylor Hicks, minus the vocals and soul.

James Michael Avance and Billy Vinson both use soprano vocals – quite poorly. Chris Jones has zero personality. Deandra Hopkins is worse.

Von Smith, from Greenwood, Mo., clearly has personality up front before I even hear him sing. Love the hat! He goes for “Over the Rainbow.” He’s very loud, a bit phlegmy, as he notes. Very mannered. He’s like a Star Search contestant, Sam Harris style. Didn’t quite like him as much as I wanted to. “You can take a lot of risks other singers can’t,” Kara said. “This guy has a dope voice,” Randy said.

Michael Castro, Jason’s younger brother, is giving it a shot. “He’s more girly and I’m more not girly,” Michael said. “You get all emotional and stuff.” He said he started singing 20 days before the audition. (Twenty days????) He’s actually really good. Wonderful depth and texture in his voice. Surprise! “It was good-ish,” Simon said. “I can’t get anything from your voice at the moment. I can’t tell with you Castros if you’re into this or not.” “You’re a ballsy dude,” Kara said. “You have a, ‘I’ve got a secret’ vibe. It shows hutzpah.” He’s through, baby!

After the commercial break, we get a jokester in Vaughn English and his banana. Thankfully, he’s gone quickly. Matt Breitzke, one of the few “older” singers featured so far, looks like a nice nice guy, a welder/fabricator. He does some Bill Withers with plenty of white soul. Lovely! “A cool bar singer,” Randy said. “Not sure if it’s right for me.” Kara didn’t agree. Paula likes him, too. “I like the control of your vibratto. It’s a nice tone.” Simon agrees with the girls. “I think you are really good. I like your heart and ambition.” I agree with Simon, not Randy on this one. He’s someone you really want to root for.

Jasmine Joseph goes by Jazz. But she’s not jazzy. She’s just godawful. Stop her! Stop her now!

Jessica Page Furney doesn’t look on the surface like she might be a good singer but she really rocks Janis Joplin. She needs a bit of a visual makeover but she can work it. “Small town, big dreams,” Simon said. “You’re a natural,” Randy said.

We have India and Asia, sisters, doing a combo audition. They rap in a funny way. But can they sing? Asia McClain, a stay at home mom, certainly can’t. India Morrison is far better. And India gets it.

Bartender Jamar Rogers from Milwaukee does a very soulful version of Mamas-n-Papas’ “California Dreamin’ ” He’s a bit over the top. I’m not sure I like it, though. “A bit corny,” Simon said. But he gets yesses across the board. I don’t think he’s going to get far.

Sob story alert! Music teacher Danny Gokey’s wife died four weeks earlier. “She was my best friend. We never got to say goodbye,” he said. “The grief is so intense.” He uses a very over-used song “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” but he pulls it off. “I liked you so much, didn’t expect it,” Paula said. “You’ve got a lot of heart and soul in you,” Kara said. Sob story + good voice = Hollywood! He could make the final 36.

Then an interlude of bad singers who don’t even get their names shown.

Not a lot of Indian-Americans have had success on Idol. So it’s good to see Anoop Desai from Chapel Hill. He can croon! “Anoop dawg is in the house!” Randy said. “A bit geeky, the look,” Simon said. “It’s like a meeting with Bill Gates. It’s a bit Silicon, high tech.” Thanks for the stereotyping, Simon!

We get cheerleaders intro Andrew Lang from Columbia, Mo. He is oversinging “My Girl” big time. I’m not sure if I buy this one. “It was okay but it wasn’t fantastic,” Simon said. No way.

Music director Asa Barnes, 28, goes the Michael Jackson route. He’s pretty good though I’m not sure he has enough distinctiveness to get very far in Hollywood. He is sweet, though. “When people sing Michael, it’s usually a disaster. This was definitely not a disaster,” Paula said.

Michael Nicewonder has that big “L” on his forehead. Hard to believe he’s 20. He looks about 35. His first song is depressing. His second one is no better.

Peppy back flippin’ Dennis Brigham from Illinois has a dream that Simon loved him. He’s kind of entertaining but his singing is not quite there. Not a fan. “It’s all a bit crazy for me,” Simon said. Dennis begs. And pleads. Does it work? Simon says no. Paula and Randy say yes. Kara gives him a yes, too. Earned? No. Not at all! He’ll be gone in Hollywood before we can all say “bikini girl!”

Sleepy gal Mia Conley takes a major chance doing Minnie Ripperton’s “Lovin’ You.” And she botches a very very difficult song. And when she goes for the high note, many eardrums pop.

There is time for one more contestant, Lil Rounds. So we get a back story. She is a tornado victim with three children and a hubby. “We’re still trying to recover,” she said. Joe’s Place Blog, which is compiling spoilers, says she makes it to the top 50. And she certainly has the skills. She has charm to spare. Top 12? Very possible! (Randy thinks she’s a cross between Fantasia and Mary J. Blige.)

I like Ryan too, and he did handle the goof nicely. However, I can see that coming up again in a recap sometime in the future. So what was my point… more Kara.

The one thing I’ve never been sure about this show is how they decide who gets in front of the judges. There’s no way those four listen to more than 10,000 people at each stop. Who makes the first cut?

Welcome DCB – From what I read, the contestants go through a series of pre-judging before they get to the four.

Casey has a real folksy sound. her voice is pure.

I’m here, but am taking notes tonight and will be back at intervals. I couldn’t remember things I wanted to last night because I was commenting on every act.

DCB it’s a long story but the stadium full of people is auditioned by about 20 different lower level producers…they narrow it down to about 200 people then a couple of upper level producers narrow it down to the 100+ people that our esteemed judges see.

SB – Health reasons at the time forced me to quit. I have been thinking about trying to start back. I league bowled for 24 years and loved every minute of it. In fact, I went into labor with my last child during the first game, but stayed and finished all three. Crazy huh? Left the center, went to the hospital and had her 47 minutes later. Where do you bowl?

Sorry folks…..I sorta got off the subject here.

Sarah B

January 14th, 2009

Funtime Bowl on Buford Hwy. It really is a great group of ladies and we are usually done by 8:30 at the latest. Our president is 80 and so is one of my teammates and they beat me on a regular basis. This is my 2nd yr in the league and I love it, all the other leagues always started to late. It’s in NE Plaza between Clairmont and N. Druid Hills. Yeah and sorry for off subject but it seems like everyone else left us…

Yes, I think we saw a few potential top 12 here tonight. Lil was awesome, but I did not think she was like Fantasia at all. Seemed much more together than Fantasia was at this stage. I really, really loved Jessica and Danny, too. Asa was third, IMO. Talk to everyone tomorrow. Hope I can get to sleep tonight. Last night I guess the excitement got to me, and I could not get to sleep. I followed several folks’ advice and had an adult beverage, so maybe that will help. My alarm goes off at 5:15 AM. Bye everyone. Enjoyed it.

Ashley Anderson: Very good!

Casey Carlson (?): Pretty good… wonder if she plays guitar.. that song A Thousand Miles would probably be good with her playing gutar.

Von: Very good singer… very good… judges give weird looks but (btw this is before the result that I said this) I’m sure they’ll say fantastic or the like… and sure enough they did. A very good singer, just way over the top… could be too much @ times in the future. He’s definitely the strongest guy we’ve seen yet. Hope he’s not the ONE the judges are putting all the girls down for though. Hopefully the ladies can control their votes this season and not raise mass votes when the “teen crush” guys do bad.

Michael Castro: Deserves to go through just because he’s better than his brother.

Matt: I thought he was pretty good.

Jessica: I liked her. Natural-looking for once… like Kat McPhee during her audition- but Kat actually still managed to look pretty then.

Missed the rapping girls because my dad was having a “psycho attack”

Black dude- forgot his name (marshawn?)-prolly not even close, but pretty good.

Danny (wife died)- I liked him!

Anupe (?)- pretty good

Asa Barnes- I wish his voice had just a little bit more ‘oomph’ but I liked it.

That guy where 3 judges said yes but simon said no to sang “With You” Chris Brown… he actually wasn’t horrible.

Lil Rounds- She was really good. One of the better ones so far, we’ll see how she does in Hollywood.

—– From the views of Hollywood week- I envision some EXTREME pimpage for Scott MacIntyre….. you watch. Big question: Will he deserve it, we’ll see.

Sorry that I missed you all and I was rooting for Asa,he didn’t disappoint! I thought tonight was much better than last night. I liked the welder, the Janis Joplin girl, the last girl, the music teacher and some others. Call me biased, but Asa is the only name that I can remember. I did notice that the better singers had no gimmicks and appeared to be more on the plain looking side. Proves that if you can truly sing, you don’t need a gimmick.

Well, tonight was much more encouraging than last night. A lot of very good talent this time around. I saw quiote a few that have finals potential and 2 that I think will be definate finalists. Overall we got to see 12 of 26 and now 22 of 53 Golden Ticket winners.

Ashley – Very good voice. I liked her a lot.

Casey – Excellent, definate final 36 potential

Von – not blown away, but there is a lot of potential in that voice he could surprise us.

Michael Castro – A lot better than Jason in my book. Looked like a freak, but the kid can sing. Not sure he is a finalist candidate but you never know.

Matt – This is my first finalist call. he has a bluesy quality that I really liked. If he makes smart song choices he will go far.

Jessica – Just ok to me.

India – definate potential, but didn’t really hear enough vocals to make a call.

Jamar – he has potential but I wasn’t blown away

Danny – Simply awesome, but then I am a fan of the Bluesy singer types. Definate top 36, possible finalist.

Anoop – Asoup is his nickname from now one because that is what I thought he said at first. geek a tron but a very good voice. A definate dark horse.

ASA – Great voice, and just a genuinely nice seeiming person.

Dennis – OK, not blown away but he deserved the ticket to hollywood.

Lil Rounds – Finalist, and in my book the front runner of the first two nights. Kind of the anti-Fantasia too. Has the vocal chops without the trailer trash slut thing. I really liked her voice.

WE, I noticed the teeth too. Alarming.

Ashley- Good but not on my A list. Very smart to appeal to Simon’s ego with the song choice though.
Casey- I’m on the fence. I’d like to hear her again before I make up my mind.
Von- If he would settle down & just sing he’d be amazing.
Michael- Aaannnd he’s as spacey as Jason. But I actually liked his voice.
Matt- What the heck was Randy listening to?!? I thought he was great. He has one of those velvety voices. Love that.
Jessica- Very good. And did y’all see how comfortable she was in front of them? This is just what she’s supposed to do. Kelly flashbacks.
India- I already forgot what she sounded like. Not a good sign.
Jamar- Um, sorry, no.
Danny- 1. Yes, he looks like Robert Downey Jr., Deirdre. 2. I teared up at the story. 3. Love his voice. One of my early faves.
Anoop- Wow. Not what I was expecting. Really nice voice. And despite what Simon thinks, I think he’d be a nice-looking guy with a little wardrobe help.
Asa- I like him but I don’t know how far he’ll get. Bet his students love him though, seems like a super-nice guy.
Dennis- Bleh.
Lil- Excellent voice & I liked everything about the way she presented herself. As Simon said, classy. She stands out.

As for tonights show, it is actually better than last nights. Better singers, more of them, and better bad auditions. A good mix of what I like. I still have 45 minutes left to watch, but after reading the blog I see that it can wait. I already know that I’ll like Lil so I’ll see her audition tomorrow night.

Best line of the night came from my 3 1/2 year old daughter asking about Michael Castro: “Is that a boy or a girl?” No more Castro’s please.

Loved seeing the footage on Cookie. I’m pretty much in agreement with flbravesgirl except for Michael Castro. Didn’t like anything about him..

Good Morning Blogesters.

Today’s Quote: “A lie cannot live.”

Seems like the overall concensus is basically the same on last night’s show. At this point, there is no need for me to add any comment. I will repeat what I say last night and that is, that I think Lil will make the top 24 and possibly in the top 10.

Time to start doing some work for which I was hired to do.

Loved the show and the fact they had better auditions…so this Jessica, does anyone know her last name? I might have missed her last night.

Ok folks…here we go! From TMZ:

“If “American Idol” wannabe Emily Wynne-Hughes manages to stick around for a while, you might get to see the first contestant perform with an alcohol monitoring bracelet!

Turns out Emily — the same tattooed chick who can’t seem to keep her pants on — is smack in the middle of a DUI fiasco, and she has been ordered to wear a SCRAM bracelet.

The whole thing is over an arrest back in July, where cops busted her for allegedly driving drunk in West Hollywood. Emily copped a plea to a lesser charge of reckless driving.

In addition to the bracelet, Emily was placed on 3 years probation.

We’ve learned there may be another hearing and the judge could back down on the SCRAM bracelet — but for now the order stands.”
