Who’s your favorite to win the 2011 Masters?

Phil Mickelson emerged victorious at last year's Masters. Can he do it again? (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

Masters Tournament week is just around the corner.

As has been the case in recent years it’s Tiger Woods against the field in the eyes of oddsmakers. Woods, who went winless last season, remains the odds-on-favorite to win his fifth green jacket this year.

What might be different are the distractions that followed Tiger during last year’s tournament.

Last year’s champion Phil Mickelson has not won a title since storming past Lee Westwood and Anthony Kim to claim his third green jacket. Mickelson has six top 10 finishes since his win at Augusta National Golf Club, but he says he’s playing better than he did then.

Ninety-two players have qualified to participate in the 76th Masters Tournament. Augusta has been home to a number of terrific finishes and stupendous failures.

Who will champion the fairway on No. 11 par-4? And who will walk victoriously up No. 18 Holly come next Sunday?

Lot’s of young new talent on the tour. Every bit as ” golf” talented” as Tiger. Tiger still has a game, but his Mojo is gone, missing. The young guys are not scared of him, and most of the time, can beat him on talent alone. Tiger is now just another good golfer who will win 2-3 times year. Maybe.

The answer is obvious. Pick a guy who consistently sprays the ball left and right off the tee; can’t “shape” irons; seems to have lost the ability to scramble and chip; and can’t read or make a putt over 4 ft. Oh yeah, has got this weird thing going of choking on the last couple of holes every round he plays. A man supposedly with nerves of steel. That person: Tiger Woods, who else?

Woods game is in worse shape this year than it was last season. Woods is toying around with his game too much these days. Since last years Masters tournament he has went through another swing change and and top of that he has even began messing with his putting stroke and changing the release point on his chip shots. A lot of golf analysts were baffled when he announced last week that he was changing how he hits chip shots since he has been one of the greatest at chipping in the history of the game. He’s not sharp anymore and needs to get back to the basics and quit changing things that worked well in the past. Personally, I never understood why he left butch harmon, he was at his best during the Harmon years and now I guess his ego is too big to go back to butch.

Phil, although Tiger may give him a run for his money. Maybe Tiger’s new 22 year old girlfriend who used to draw pictures for him when he was a pro and she was 7 years old will inspire him to finally win again.

Matt Kuchar – he’s been playing great last year or so – it would be good for another GT product win. If not him, then I would like to see Stewart Cink. He’s due!
