Teeing off: Friday, April 9

The first day of the Masters was perhaps more surprising than the week leading up to the Thursday a.m. tee times. Before we get to the storylines, some quick housekeeping. For updates, you have plenty of choices. 1. Scoreboard at the AJC. 2. This blog will have updates and analysis from the scene. 3. ajcsportseditor at Twitter. 4. The Masters Web site follows some holes and one group. 5. Tee times. Tiger off at 10:35 a.m. | Watson 12:25 | Couples 9:40 a.m. | Mickelson 1:42 p.m.

So here are some of those surprising story lines:

>> Tiger Woods shoots best opening round of his Masters career. Story. Column by AJC’s Jeff Schultz. Hole-by-hole. Photos.

>> Two great sentences to recap the day: “To all this unseemly tumult, the Masters offered the only — and best — response that it could muster. It painted its scoreboard in under-par red numbers, and attached them to some of most appealing names.” Story by AJC’s Steve Hummer in Augusta. Day 1 Photos.

>> So. Some of those appealing names? Watson, Mickelson, Couples. AJC. Turn back the clock day. Blog.

>> Phil Mickelson tied for second. Augusta Chronicle.

>> And maybe you heard about the unauthorized banners that flew over Augusta and mocked Tiger Woods. First banner. Second banner. Origin.

>> Alleged mistress Joslyn James headlines act at the Pink Pony. AJC.

>> Also, Salon.com’s top 10 dumbest Tiger Woods story angles. Slideshow.

The AJC has complete photo coverage of the Masters:

Well I see the AJC is right in there mixing it up with the tabloids this morning. What a great day of golf and just look at all the compelling storylines! Is Woods a story? Sure he shot the 7th best round yesterday and deserves mention for that. You might want to mention that he is coming back after a layoff. Do we really need to tout whats happening at the Pink Pony? Do we really need to give airplane banners headlines? Do we really need eight Tiger Woods related headlines? As usual the AJC is missing the story for the smoke. Maybe a few stories about the 7 guys that played better would be in order?

I’m with you JDW. Only TRUE golf fans can appreciate what is going on. The rest of these morons are just bandwagon folks. Here’s to hoping Freddy can put Tiger in the background. Go Couples!

JDW, CW: I think a lot of people feel the same way you do. Among the stories linked, I thought Steve Hummer’s piece really captured that. Here’s the story. Thanks for reading and here’s to hoping the outside storylines – Watson-Couples, for one – continue.
