Masters chairman Billy Payne chastises Tiger Woods in address

Augusta — Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament Chairman Billy Payne took Tiger Woods to task during his annual chairman’s address.

After comparing Woods the golfer to Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, Payne proceeded to chastise Woods the role model for his behavior off the course and toward fans.

“As he ascended in our rankings of the world’s great golfers, he became an example to our kids that success is directly attributable to hard work and effort,” Payne said during his opening remarks. “But as he now says of himself, he forgot in the process to remember that with fame and fortune comes responsibility, not invisibility. It is not simply the degree of his conduct that is so egregious here; it is the fact that he disappointed all of us and, more importantly, our kids and our grandkids. Our hero did not live up to the expectations we saw for our children.”

Payne seemed to be as bothered by how aloof Woods is in public as he was by his private transgressions.

“Certainly his future will never again be measured only by his performance against par, but measured by the sincerity in his efforts to change,” Payne said. “I hope he realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing but would settle for his smile.

“I hope he can come to understand that life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who bring joy to other people.”

Payne, a UGA graduate and Atlanta native, also addressed several other subjects in his annual remarks, traditionally delivered the day before the Masters begins.

  • The new practice facility and Augusta National’s commitment to “the concept of perpetual improvement.”
  • Changes to the golf course, which includes lengthening the tees on No. 5 and No. 13, expanding the patron corridor between the No. 1 tee and the practice green and rebuilding the greens on Nos. 2 and 15 to encourage more players to try to reach the par-5 holes in two shots.
  • Broadcasting the tournament — and today’s Par-3 Contest — for the first time in 3D.
  • Sponsoring (along with the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in Great Britain) the Asian Amateur Championship. The winner is an automatic qualifer.

Yurtle, if you think having a few token members (admitted under pressure) means AN is not racist…well, you’re may not be an idiot, but you’re certainly dumb.

Tiger never asked to be a role model so in my opinion he hasn’t let anyone down! People like to place sports figures up in a pedestal and for what? So they can play a sport better than anyone else, he’s still a human being and subjected to the same flaws as everyone else (probably a wife that gave up on sex!).

Billy Payne, what? Didn’t h preside as President over one of the most ethically challenged Olympic committee? St. Billy, are you crazy? Keep in mind, when Billy says that “…forever Tiger will be judged going forward…” that blacks and women should forever judge Augusta National on their past treatment of both groups. I also find it interesting that as disappointed as he claims to be in Tiger’s behavior, he sure didn’t preclude him from participating and make their tourney one of the most watched ever. The rest of the golf world has seen what the tour interest has been without Tiger, a disastrous drop off!

When Tiger, Vick, Bobby Cox, Kobe Bryant did their things in their private lives I am fine with leaving that between them, their teams, their sponsors and their leagues. Payne should have stayed out of it. When Selig, Bonds, McGuire, Clements, Sosa altered the game… I have a real issue with that.

Tiger said when his father passed it put things in perspective for him. Then when his kids were born he said they put things in perspective for him. Now he says he has things in perspective. How much more perspective does he need to get his life in order? He takes so many things for granted. Hopefully he will get his head on straight before the golfing / sports world says enough.

Methinks that Billy Payne should have learned from Jack Nicklaus. Jack politely said “no comment” when asked about “Tiger” There was no need for Payne to state the obvious and that is that his behavior was “horrible”. As chairman of Augusta National, he should have shown class and dignity by talking about the tournament and stay on positive things. Absolutely no need to even talk about something that has already been discussed by every talk show.

I don’t think Billy was being judgemental at all. He only confirmed what Tiger said of himself with the following quote:
“But as he now says of himself, he forgot in the process to remember that with fame and fortune comes responsibility, not invisibility.”

Billy P could have just left it alone.
Everytime someone utters a phrase about Tiger — and it’s done EVERY day and night in every corner of the cesspool called The Media– his wife hears it, too. Another knife in the back of the innocent victim. I’m just glad his children are too young to know what’s going on.
Shame on The Media and shame on you Billy Payne. Just had to get your face time about it, didn’t you?

Billy Payne should have not allowed Tiger to play in the Masters if he feels so strongly about his convictions. Evidently his convictions don’t matter much when it comes to the revenue that Tiger will generate.

What part of “we don’t want any female members” do you not understand? For God’s sake, quit bitching about it, choose your own membership, make your own rules, build your own golf course, and then do with “your” club as you wish. Look how far trying to “force” Augusta National into female members got Martha Burke. These are very rich, influential, and powerful men. They will not be “forced” into anything they do not approve of–and for whatever reason–they don’t want female members!!! Find something else to whine about. By the way, enjoy the Masters Golf Tournament, which is broadcast with basically no commercials for your enjoyment.

While Billy Payne has a right to his opinion he picked the wrong forum – a public forum – to denounce Tiger. The proper way would have been to talk with him privately and voice his opinion. I am very disappointed in Billy and my respect for him has diminished somewhat because of this. This is an issue that is between Tiger and his wife. If Joe Blow cheats on his wife – that’s none of my business – that’s between him and his wife.

Chip Shirley,

Get over yourself. Augusta National is a private club. Some of the most influential people in the world have not been able to join the club. It is a right that a private club holds. Everybody wants to cry because they think they are entitled to join everything and own everything. It’s not reality and it never will be. There are many clubs/organizations that every race is not allowed into because they are PRIVATE. It doesn’t make them wrong. There are clubs that I would love to join but can’t afford or my skin is not the right color. So what? There are others that may be more fitting for me so I will choose to join those. People need to get over their entitlement issues. PRIVATE IS PRIVATE.

Billy Payne is nothing but a skoal chewing, manure shoveling, pitchfork carrying, hog slopping, mayonnaise sandwich eating, NRA card carrying, still uses racial slurs in private, typical ignorant uga filth

this does not apply to all uga fans/alums/attended but never graduated persons but it does apply to MANY of them.

Payne did not say anything about Tiger that Tiger did not say about himself.
Tiger put himself in the position of a role model.
There is nothing wrong with a private all men’s club.
Augusta National has black members.

Tiger Woods is a sleazy, pompous jerk who considers himself above it all, hence his reprehensible behavior. Who cares about his golf game? I enjoy golf, but I realize it’s just swinging a club. Same as Major Leaguers playing a child’s game, football and basketball players being the biggest jerks you can find… Tiger should go play golf with the likes of them.

Gentleman’s game, my foot. He isn’t a gentleman.

Billy Payne’s comments are spot-on, and Tiger’s travails will never be private, as long as there is an American media, so hang all the none-of-our-business stuff in your ear — it’s been made our business, we couldn’t escape it if we tried.

OUTSTANDING OBSERVATION MR. PAYNE. WHEN TIGER STALKS THE COURSE, HE STRIKES LITERAL FEAR IN THE GALLERY BECAUSE HE’S BEEN TRAINED TO BE RUDE MASKED AS “FOCUS”. AND HE RECOGNIZES IT AND ADMITS TO EVERYTHING MR. PAYNE SAYS. BUT THE CHAIRMAN PUTS IT RIGHT. EVERY MAN MUST LOOK INTO HIS OWN HEART, BECAUSE AS MEN WE TOLERATE, NO, ENCOURAGE THIS “BON VIVON” BEHAVIOR WHICH DAMAGES US AS HUMANS AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVES US. THANKS MR. PAYNE.

I worked for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games under Billy Payne. Approximately one year after my arrival, Payne changed his mind and decided that my department’s function should be outsourced entirely. So, one bloody Monday morning, his hatchet man Richard Stogner (recently found liable for race discrimination while working for Dekalb Country) laid-off all 14 of us. One of my co-workers had sold his home in Los Angeles and purchased a home in Atlanta after being offered the ACOG job—approximately three months before he was let go with the rest of us.

In short, Billy Payne needs to look in the mirror before lecturing others about “egregious conduct.”
