Masters chairman Billy Payne chastises Tiger Woods in address

Augusta — Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament Chairman Billy Payne took Tiger Woods to task during his annual chairman’s address.

After comparing Woods the golfer to Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, Payne proceeded to chastise Woods the role model for his behavior off the course and toward fans.

“As he ascended in our rankings of the world’s great golfers, he became an example to our kids that success is directly attributable to hard work and effort,” Payne said during his opening remarks. “But as he now says of himself, he forgot in the process to remember that with fame and fortune comes responsibility, not invisibility. It is not simply the degree of his conduct that is so egregious here; it is the fact that he disappointed all of us and, more importantly, our kids and our grandkids. Our hero did not live up to the expectations we saw for our children.”

Payne seemed to be as bothered by how aloof Woods is in public as he was by his private transgressions.

“Certainly his future will never again be measured only by his performance against par, but measured by the sincerity in his efforts to change,” Payne said. “I hope he realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing but would settle for his smile.

“I hope he can come to understand that life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who bring joy to other people.”

Payne, a UGA graduate and Atlanta native, also addressed several other subjects in his annual remarks, traditionally delivered the day before the Masters begins.

  • The new practice facility and Augusta National’s commitment to “the concept of perpetual improvement.”
  • Changes to the golf course, which includes lengthening the tees on No. 5 and No. 13, expanding the patron corridor between the No. 1 tee and the practice green and rebuilding the greens on Nos. 2 and 15 to encourage more players to try to reach the par-5 holes in two shots.
  • Broadcasting the tournament — and today’s Par-3 Contest — for the first time in 3D.
  • Sponsoring (along with the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in Great Britain) the Asian Amateur Championship. The winner is an automatic qualifer.

Who cares what Billy Bob Payne says – he probably has a couple of floozies on the side himself. And the Augusta National Golf Club does not exactly have a stellar record when it comes to treatment of fans or the treatment of women

And this comes from someone who didn’t want blacks to be able to enjoy the Augusta National Golf Course as a member. Please be your own child/grand child’s role model.

Can’t assume everybody is a piece of crap in private just because some people are… And just because this guy talks with a southern draw doesn’t mean he hasn’t earned the right to be heard. Obviously some people think he has because his comments were posted on this site.

Not sure what you mean by “treatment of fans…” Nice place with wonderfully nice people. And they treat a lot of women very well, just not like some think they should be treated…

I applaud Mr. Payne for actually telling the truth about Mr. Untouchable. He made millions portraying himself as a moral, family man while deceiving his wife and the public. It’s about time someone really called him out on his behavior. Everyone else seems to be afraid of him. As for the treatment of fans, obviously the poster above has never been to Augusta National. That’s the most fan-friendly venue in sports. Period.

Lot of ways to “mistreat” women… Some would argue that “not allowing them in a private club” and abusing them emotionally and physically are both “mistreating” them.

Now, I would argue that Augusta is not really “private” since it is the most well known golf club in the world, so that rationale for not allowing them in has long since run its course…

And I think that as soon as the number of billionaire women in the world increase, the number of women member’s of Augusta might actually reach “1.” I think Augusta is more of a reflection of all of society and $$$, and less of a reflection of the “political and social right” as it has always been characterized. The membership there is driven MUCH MORE by socio-economic descrimination than it is gender and race (although I am not stupid enough to realize it exists) – just like society.

Typo’s, ignorance and stupidity…oh my! The ‘tolerant’ ones on this board don’t realize that they are the ones judging Billy Payne for things he didn’t even say. Things they just assumed he said. Billy has been chairman of Augusta since 2006. Augusta National admitted its first African-American member in 1990! And what does Catholicism have to do with the Masters!

And from central casting we have a pompous gasbag passing judgment on others. Nice to know the man who headed up the 1996 Olympics/County Fair with all of its dysfunctions and Augusta National are so self-confident about not having any shortcomings that they can put out bilge such as this.

Tiger Woods treated fans like crap and behaved like an immature fool on the golf course long before last Thanksgiving – where was Saint Billy with his concerns before the wheels came off the sport’s gravy train?

Every accent of every language on the planet has its representatives on both ends of the intelligence spectrum. Those with a southern draw have both, just like those with a western draw and those with a northern accent. Heard ‘em all, and seen “stupid” and “brilliant” alike…

The Augusta National is a PRIVATE club meaning they can let in who they want, when they want. It is not a RIGHT to be a member of ANGC, it is a PRIVILEDGE. Get over yourselves and them letting in blacks or women. This a free country and if a private entity was to exclude (or more correctly, not INCLUDE) anyone, it is their RIGHT. What a bunch of bafoons. The said thing is y’all vote AND reproduce. God Bless this Country!!

Get over yourselves. He is an athlete who cheated on his wife. How many woman, where, when – none of that is anyone’s business. He made a mistake within his marriage and that is the only place he needs to be dealt with. Get over it folks and move on.

Well said Mr Payne. Yes you have the ignorant buffoons on here that lack class, manners, respect and
education who hate your words. They show their ignorance and hatred with their replies.
Tiger messed up, but the ignorant that idolize him still want to pimp him out as a role model.
These are the same people who cry their child is innocent when little Leroy robs, steals, beats his wife etc.
Instead of applauding your words they look for negatives that aren’t their.
And as for ignorant Mrs G,
Just as you are allowed to deny entry of anyone in your PRIVATE RESIDENCE so is any private club allowed to let who they want to enter or not enter.
Get over it!

I am really surprised Payne would even bother to address this. Really not his place. If he (and other Augusta National members) felt so strongly about it, they could have not invited Tiger. But then again, they know they stand to gain more financially with him there. I would also doubt that most National members aren’t exactly saints.

As for the rant above about the Catholic Church….???? The sex abuse scandal got A LOT of attention and still does today. Wasn’t exactly swept under the rug. My guess is that you just hate Catholics which makes you so less a bigot than you probably think Republican Catholics are.

Joetheplumber- “Son is that Holy Water on your shirt”. Not exactly Dad!!!!!!hahahalol. Is child molestation funny to you? Billy Payne has a beef with Tiger and your response it to make fun of children being violated by grown men. In the same way you point out that Augusta National, the media, and the Catholic church practices great injustices on certain groups, you appear to be doing the same thing. I guess since you hide behind a blog name that makes it OK.

John Daly has been punished by sponsors as well lost sponsors, he has been chastized by many
including his ex golf coach (who cut him loose and refused to keep coaching), has been suspended by the PGA,
has been punished over and over again. He just doesn’t care and has lots of respect because of it.
You might want to read about things and learn what you speak of before you show your lack of knowledge.

Absolutely inappropriate for opening remarks to a Golf tournament. Who said you were the moral compass Mr. Payne – shame on you.
