An Atlanta city councilman has proposed moving last call at bars to 4 a.m. largely for financial reasons.
What do you think? Should Atlanta extend hours bars can serve alcohol?

It’s never been about safety, it’s always been about private interest profiteering. Norwood and her cronies held up the airport expansion vote until other city council members capitulated on the 2:30 closing law. For safety? No, because she and two other council members had a private interest in ill conceived Underground Atlanta bar district. It was never about safety in Buckhead or downtown, they just used the shootings as leverage to implement a law that would hurt tax paying legal independent neighborhood / locally owned businesses so that they could drive business to the bars in Underground Atlanta. Fight government corruption, help restore our tourism and nightlife industries, and bring Atlanta into the 21st century with other major cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Atlanta should be a city that never sleeps, instead of rolling up the sidewalks at 2:30.

Since 2003,…
How much in sales tax (8%) and “by the drink” (3.5%) tax revenues has the city missed?
How many conventions has Atlanta lost to other cities?
How many police officers lost their ability to earn a supplemental income which was not paid by the city, but individual businesses and business associations?
How many potential crimes were prevented by those “extra-job” officers?
How many more property crimes were committed during the extra hours of “ghost town”?
How many crimes would not have been committed with open businesses, lights on, and potential witnesses out and about?
How many service/entertainment industry jobs have been lost?
How many service/entertainment workers got new jobs just outside the city limits, and have been making A LOT of money off of Atlanta? (I did once upon a time. Thanks Decatur!)
And…
How well has the special interest, “entertainment district” known as Underground Atlanta fared while having the exclusive privilege of remaining open until 4AM? Who holds those interests?…Look into it.
I don’t know the answers. I’m just asking the questions.
One more,
When and where is the PUBLIC hearing on Monday, November 23?

PS: Is Decatur less safe – the bars are open there until 4 am. If Atlanta wants to be treated like a Metro than it should behave as a Metro. And not like boring little village. No wonder that there are no tourists.

I am all about that, since I am used to party till 6 am in Germany. And there – no drunk drivnig, never seen any trouble. So, we do I have to suffer from that. Wanna prevent drunken driving – support a 24 h reliable public transport and more police and the streets. Think the body has to sleep at 4 am? Talk to a farmer who has to get up than or a physician on call…You want safety? Stop selling guns to idiots. Stop pissing in your pants for no reason. You don’t prohibit driving in ATL even though it causes more accidents than bars open till 4 am.
